The words lingered between them long after Lucifer stepped away.
If I start wanting this… I won’t stop.
The fire crackled softly inside the cave while snow continued falling endlessly outside, yet Heaven could barely hear either anymore.
Her heartbeat had become too loud.
Lucifer stood several feet away now with his back turned toward her, shadows curling violently around him once more like creatures responding to his unrest.
Heaven stared at him silently.
Because she finally understood something terrifying.
Lucifer was not afraid of hurting her.
He was afraid of wanting her too much.
The realization settled deeply inside her chest.
“You say things like that,” she whispered softly, “then expect me to sleep peacefully afterward.”
Lucifer laughed faintly beneath his breath.
A tired sound.
Dangerously human.
“That sounds like your problem.”
Heaven narrowed her eyes slightly.
“You nearly kissed me twice.”
“You nearly let me.”
Heat rushed immediately into her face again.
The mate bond pulsed warmly between them.
Lucifer visibly stiffened.
“Stop doing that.”
“I’m not doing anything intentionally!”
“That somehow makes it worse.”
Despite everything, a small laugh escaped her.
Lucifer slowly looked back over his shoulder at the sound.
And for one fleeting second—
Something softened in his expression again.
Gods.
That softness would ruin her eventually.
The Devil turned away once more afterward.
Distance.
He kept trying to create distance between them.
Even while the bond kept pulling them together.
Heaven carefully stood from the blankets before walking closer to him again.
“You keep retreating.”
Lucifer’s jaw tightened slightly.
“I’m attempting restraint.”
“Why?”
That question alone felt dangerous.
Lucifer remained silent for several long seconds before answering quietly—
“Because I know what I become when I want something.”
The shadows around him darkened.
Violent.
Possessive.
Ancient hunger hidden beneath centuries of control.
Heaven felt it through the bond immediately.
Not lust alone.
Something deeper.
Terrifyingly intense attachment.
Lucifer closed his eyes briefly afterward like he regretted letting her feel even that much.
“You deserve honesty at least,” he murmured.
The quiet vulnerability in his voice made her chest ache again.
Heaven stepped closer until only a small distance remained between them.
“And what if I’m not afraid?”
Lucifer looked at her instantly.
The shadows stilled.
The air itself felt heavier now.
“Heaven…”
“What if I want this too?”
The mate bond exploded violently.
Warmth crashed through both of them so sharply Lucifer actually inhaled slowly through clenched teeth.
Control.
He was losing control.
And Heaven realized with dangerous fascination that the Devil’s restraint might be the only thing standing between them and complete disaster.
Lucifer moved suddenly.
Fast.
Not away from her this time.
Toward her.
Heaven barely had time to breathe before he stood directly in front of her again, crimson eyes glowing faintly within the firelight.
“You do not understand what you’re saying.”
“Then explain it.”
Lucifer stared down at her silently.
Gods, she was fearless.
Or foolish.
Possibly both.
“You think this bond feels gentle because I keep it controlled,” he said quietly.
The honesty in his voice sent chills through her.
“If I stop…” His gaze lowered briefly toward her lips again. “You will feel everything.”
The way he said it made her pulse race instantly.
Everything.
All his desire.
All his possessiveness.
All the terrifying emotions Lucifer buried beneath cold control.
Heaven swallowed hard.
Part of her wanted to know.
That part frightened her deeply.
Lucifer noticed.
And somehow—
That made his restraint return slightly.
He stepped backward once more.
Good.
Necessary.
Because another moment near her and centuries of discipline might truly shatter.
“We leave at dawn,” he said quietly.
The sudden change of subject almost annoyed her.
“You’re avoiding this again.”
“Yes.”
“At least you’re honest.”
Lucifer looked mildly amused despite himself.
“I find deception exhausting.”
“That’s ironic.”
A faint smirk touched his lips.
Then suddenly—
The mate bond pulsed sharply with warning.
Lucifer’s expression changed instantly.
Every trace of softness vanished.
The shadows around him sharpened violently.
Heaven felt it too.
Something wrong.
Something approaching.
Lucifer turned toward the cave entrance immediately.
“Wake everyone.”
The command came cold and absolute.
Heaven’s heartbeat quickened.
“What is it?”
Lucifer’s crimson eyes darkened.
“Demons.”
The cave exploded into movement instantly.
Cassian grabbed his sword while guards scrambled awake in confusion. Holland sat upright near the fire looking half asleep and fully irritated.
“If this is another emotional crisis—”
“It’s an ambush,” Lucifer interrupted sharply.
That woke everyone immediately.
Father Orion rose from prayer near the cave wall.
“How many?”
Lucifer listened carefully to the storm outside.
Then his expression hardened further.
“Too many.”
The snowstorm beyond the cave entrance suddenly darkened unnaturally.
Not clouds.
Shadows.
Dozens of winged figures moved through the blizzard skies surrounding the mountains.
Heaven’s stomach dropped instantly.
Azrath found them.
A deafening roar suddenly echoed through the mountain pass outside.
The guards visibly paled.
One soldier whispered shakily—
“What was that?”
Lucifer’s expression became lethal.
“War beasts.”
Holland blinked repeatedly.
“I’m sorry, war what?”
The mountain beneath them trembled violently.
Snow crashed from the cliffs overhead.
Then enormous glowing eyes appeared beyond the storm outside the cave.
Massive.
Monstrous.
Hungry.
Lucifer stepped forward slowly while darkness gathered around him like a living storm.
“Heaven,” he said quietly without looking back, “stay behind me.”
She immediately hated those words now.
Because every time he said them—
Someone bled afterward.
The creature outside roared again.
Closer this time.
The cave entrance suddenly exploded inward.
Stone shattered everywhere.
Guards screamed.
And something massive forced itself through the collapsing entrance beneath a flood of snow and darkness.
The beast looked horrifying.
Twice the size of a horse with black armored skin stretched over monstrous muscle. Jagged horns curved from its skull while molten red eyes locked directly onto Lucifer.
More creatures waited outside the cave.
Dozens.
And behind them—
Winged demons descended slowly through the snowstorm skies.
At their center stood Azrath.
Smiling.
The rebel lord’s voice echoed across the mountains.
“Good evening, old king.” His golden eyes shifted toward Heaven. “And precious little light.”
