“Tonight, we’re going out to celebrate,” Nana declared after I gave her a brief tour of the apartment. There wasn’t much to show her. As soon as you entered you were in my room aka the living room, there was a small open-plan kitchen that we used mainly for heating take-out or making popcorn on our nights in. When I didn’t want to spend any money, we’d stay in and catch something on Netflix. Which would be my way every single night, but Gail would always insist that we went out even if it was just for a walk around Central Park. A thing that I loved to do to get some fresh air and stretch my legs.
“Nothing to celebrate Nana. I didn’t get a job. Besides Abe’s coming in a few days. So, I need to pack my things…”
Nana held her hand up to stop me rambling, something that she accused me of doing all the time, which for the first time, I wasn’t doing. I was stating the obvious. My time in the city was coming to a dramatic end; it was getting more evident every day that I needed to go back.
She straightened her pink pencil skirt and said, “No. You are going to go back to the billionaire on Monday morning and demand the job. So, tonight we’ll celebrate the job that you’ll soon have. Unfortunately, Papaw’s not too well, and I need to get back to him so I can only stay for the weekend.”
I was about to ask her, what’s up with Papaw? And if she knew that he wasn’t well, why she did she come here this weekend? And why were we going out, if he wasn’t well? Nothing about what she had just said made any sense, but I didn’t have a chance to make her clear up the confusion as she directed me to the bathroom.
“Wash your face. Let’s do your make-up properly and get ready to party.”
Gail smiled, “I’m down with that!”
She would be! Only a few minutes ago, we were holding hands and crying like two broken hearted kids, who’d just lost their favorite pet.
“Ok,” I shrugged knowing when I’d been cornered into something that I had no control over, and I knew that there was no way out. The force was against me, one was Nana, and the other was Gail. Two party girls who loved to party who were now on a mission to make me see sense.
That getting drunk together and losing myself would make everything better.
My phone rang, and I ran to it, but for some reason, Nana managed to pick it up first and she turned it off.
“Why did you do that?” I asked as I stood by her side.
“Because I know who’s calling. It’s Abe. You only need goodness tonight, and I’m going to make sure you get it.”
Gail piped in, “Exactly.”
Which meant that she knew what was going on too. It made no sense to me. Nana left Pa to come here, and now she was stopping me from talking to Abe. This meant that something was up her sleeve and it wasn’t to make sure that I partied.
She smiled at me and cupped my face. A comfort that brought me right back to my childhood. “Sweetie, let’s go out and leave your troubles behind for tonight. That’s what I’m doing. This is why we need to party together tonight. It’s essential to me.”
Why?
She shook her head as she read my mind, “Trust me.”
Then she kissed me on the cheek. A kiss which said shut up and do what I say, which was what I intended to do. The questions that were ringing in my head weren’t worth the trouble. But having one too many drinks was precisely what I needed and damn suffering the consequences the next day.
“Let the party begin!”
I cried out as Gail shoved a shot of tequila in my hand. Where did that come from, but then there was one thing that Nana loved to party with, and that was tequila, so it was a silly question. Then another silly question ran through my head as I thought about seeing Kent again and getting the job. A girl could dream, even if I didn’t see it happening.
