I woke up to the irritating sound of someone knocking on my door loud, persistent, and completely unnecessary.
I groaned and buried my face deeper into my pillow, hoping whoever it was would just go away.
"Go away!" I shouted, my voice muffled but still sharp with irritation.
I didn't want to see anyone. Not today. Not after last night.
But of course, in this house, my wishes meant absolutely nothing.
The door creaked open anyway.
"I said go away!" I snapped, sitting up slightly. "Is that so hard to understand?!"
I turned my head toward the door, already annoyed, only to see my sister standing there. She looked hesitant… almost guilty.
I didn't care.
I just stared at her, my expression blank, refusing to give her anything.
"Good morning," she said softly, like everything was normal.
That alone irritated me.
"What do you want?" I asked, my tone cold enough to freeze the room.
"I came to talk to you."
I let out a short, humorless laugh. "Well, I don't want to talk to you. So please, leave."
"Cas, you have to listen to me," she insisted, taking a small step forward.
"No, I don't," I shot back immediately. "Not when you clearly don't care about me anymore."
The words came out sharper than I expected, but I didn't regret them.
I turned my back to her and hugged my pillow tightly, as if it could shield me from everything happening around me.
At least my pillow wouldn't betray me.
At least it wouldn't sit quietly while my life was being decided for me.
Honestly, I should just take it with me when I get married.
…Wait.
Why the hell was I even entertaining that thought?
The reality of it made my stomach twist.
"I just want to say I'm sorry," she said quietly from behind me.
I closed my eyes, trying to block her out.
"Too late, Elisia," I replied flatly. "That ship sailed a long time ago."
I paused before adding, "Please leave."
This time, I meant it.
I heard her sigh a soft, defeated sound before her footsteps slowly faded away. A moment later, the door clicked shut.
Finally.
Silence.
I let out a breath and sank deeper into my bed, ready to escape back into sleep the only place where none of this existed.
But just as I started to relax.
Knock.
Again.
I groaned loudly and threw my arm over my face.
What is it with people today?!
Out of all days, the one day I didn't have to go to work, everyone suddenly decided I was the most important person in the house.
I turned over angrily, ready to yell at whoever it was this time.
But the words died in my throat the moment I saw her.
"Cassie!" Isa exclaimed, rushing toward me.
Before I could even react, she wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug way too tight.
"Isa" I wheezed. "I'm not dying, okay? Please let me live!"
She immediately pulled back, only to smack my arm hard.
"Ow! What the hell was that for?!" I yelped, clutching my arm.
"For scaring me yesterday, you i***t!" she snapped. "I thought you were going to die!"
Her face was completely serious, which only made it harder for me not to laugh.
Typical Isa, dramatic as always.
Still, I pressed my lips together, trying not to provoke her further.
"Really?" I said, raising an eyebrow. "You think you can get rid of me that easily?"
She crossed her arms, clearly still annoyed, but I could see the relief in her eyes.
And for the first time since last night.
I didn't feel completely alone.
