The next evening, I had my eyes glued to the screen of my laptop as I took in the details of Theron Michaelson. I bit my lip nervously, crossing my legs. I had been going through some financial difficulties recently. My abusive and violent ex had loaned me money for my father's heart surgery and medication. Now he demands payment and I didn't have enough to pay him back.
“So… What do you think,” Joseph said, handing me a glass of mango juice.
“I don’t know, honestly. I mean… this is huge,” I replied, accepting the glass.
He sat on the blue plush sofa opposite mine in the middle of my living room.
“This is your only chance of getting the money. I know this is a lot for you to take in, but right now, you need it… if you wish to survive.”
I eyed him. “If I wished to survive? What does that even mean?”
“Don’t take this the wrong way, Simone, but I mean look around you. Things are looking pretty bad. I might be your manager, but I have been your friend since college, so I will tell you the truth. Your career is failing. It’s been difficult to get you back on track and get movie contracts, especially after what happened in Minnesota.”
“You don’t have to remind me of that,” I retorted, my brows creasing with my frown.
“I am sorry, but the truth they say is always bitter. Moreover, Phillip has also been on your neck for his money. You have to pay him back, and you have to pay him soon. I would have helped you, but my own situation isn’t any better than yours.”
I sipped the juice and felt the cold liquid cascade down my throat. It was the same cold feeling I had felt flushing down my spine when he mentioned my ex-boyfriend.
“But why did he choose me?” I asked, ignoring his comments.
“Beats me as well,” he answered.
“You think he knows about my situation?”
Joseph chuckled. “Come on. How could he? You are overthinking things a lot.”
“Who knows? He might have hired a private investigator to find out all he could about me.”
“That still brings us to the question, ‘why’. I mean, why would he even go through that problem when there are other women out there? Honestly, the whole thing seems strange to me, but it’s not unusual.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“There have been several cases of heirs to empires needing to achieve a clause attached to their inheritance. The clause would be for them to get married before inheriting all of their father’s empire,” he continued.
“People still do things like this?” I asked.
“Of course they do. And considering Mr James Michaelson just died three months ago, Theron’s plan would be to get into a contract marriage with a lady to get his inheritance.”
I felt my stomach turn. “So there is no form of attraction, just business?”
“Don’t tell me he has already caught your eyes. It won’t serve you any good, love. It’s just business. It’s just a contract, no form of feelings. If you choose to ride along, you are only getting married to him for the money, and he would only see you as a tool to get his inheritance.”
I glanced out the window at the beautiful skyline of the city - it was evening, the atmosphere was cold and harsh just like the words Joseph had said to me. He wasn’t far from the truth. I had been thinking about Theron all night, trying to remember his smell and the sound of his voice. I knew I had to focus on the money I would get from all of this. To think that help came from the last place she had expected, God really had a way of doing wonders. I might be the wife of a billionaire?... The mere thought of it was amusing.
I was still processing all of this in my mind when one of my phones started ringing abruptly, snapping me rudely from my thoughts - it was an unknown number.
“Who’s that?” Joseph asked.
“No idea. I don’t have this number on my phone,” I answered. “It’s weird ‘cause not several people have this number.”
“Why aren’t you answering it? What if it’s your Prince Theron the charming.”
I eyed him.
“Hello?” I said after answering the phone.
“Miss Simone,” Came the caller's voice. “Simone Miller?”
I felt my heart race. Could it be Phillip playing tricks? I bit my lower lip nervously and nodded while replying, a small “yes”
“Good. I apologize for calling late. I dropped a mail in your mailbox this afternoon, but perhaps you didn't check it.”
“Go on.”
“I'm Detective Karl and I believe you are related to Grace Miller.”
I felt my heart almost leap out from its normal position. Grace was my sister - my younger sister and my only family left. What could have happened to her? An accident?
“Miss Miller, are you still there?” The detective asked.
“Yes, I am.” I could literally hear my heart pounding really loud. Joseph was staring curiously at me.
“Well, your sister has been arrested as a prime suspect in a murder and you..." His voice trailed off as my grip on the phone loosened. My head was spinning. What?..
