Chapter 3Valentine’s Day, and Gran’s birthday, drew close enough to taste. Cards arrived through the post, wishing a happy birthday with faded birds and puppies sporting hats. The air crackled with breathy frost and a hint of winter sun. It seemed people were relieved to have made it through into another new year and wanted to pass on their luck through acts of kindness. Neighbors popped round to ask after Gran. At the bus stop, kids helped with shopping bags. Bill, at the corner shop said, “You can pay in installments, love. Don’t worry about it.
