CHAPTER 4

I pushed him away, I couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and relief. I quickly explained my feelings, "Sorry, I don't think I'm ready for that tonight. I'm still a little shaken up from what happened, and we still barely know each other." Axe's demeanor shifted, and he seemed to understand my words, responding, "You're right... neither of us should be doing this." There was a momentary flash of an odd but familiar look in his eyes, leaving me wondering about the emotions behind it. His face turned stiff, and the flirtatious atmosphere that had surrounded us moments ago faded away. "There's pain in his eyes, but why?" I couldn't help but wonder, trying to make sense of the sudden change in his behavior. Instead of explaining himself, Axe simply turned and began to leave. The abruptness of his departure left me feeling a bit bewildered, yearning for answers, yet unsure of how to seek them. "There's a spare toothbrush in the drawer if you'd like to freshen up before bed," he said, his voice now devoid of the warmth from before. With that, he left me alone on the bathroom counter, my mind racing with a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. "What the hell? One second he's all over me, and now he's leaving? He basically just kissed me, pulled away, implied I had stank breath, and walked out. Did I do something wrong? But that doesn't make sense. He kissed me first. I hope I didn't inadvertently say something that upset him. Maybe something from his past? I suppose there isn't much point worrying about it now," I pondered, trying to find some semblance of clarity. As I brushed my teeth, I couldn't help but notice the cuts and bruises on my face in the mirror. Thoughts of my friend Kacey crossed my mind, and I wondered what she would say when she saw me tomorrow. "God, she's going to be worried sick," I thought, feeling a pang of concern for her. Interrupted from my thoughts by Axe's gentle knock on the bathroom door, I called out, "Scarlet." "Yeah?" I answered, opening the door to find him holding a bundle of clothes. "I found a change of clothes in case that outfit is starting to get a little uncomfortable. I only have men's stuff, but hopefully, there's something in here that'll fit," he said, offering me the clothes. "Thanks. That'd be great," I replied, appreciating his thoughtfulness. With a curt nod, he left the room, giving me privacy to change. As I slipped into the fresh clothes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort in the gesture. Taking one last look in the bathroom mirror, I gathered my courage and stepped out into the rest of the penthouse. As I took a seat on the soft mattress, my heart raced like a wild stallion, trying to break free from its reins. "Hey, axe?" I stammered, my voice betraying the nerves I felt. "In here," he replied, his voice carrying a sense of mystery that only deepened my intrigue. His voice echoed down the hall, guiding me toward his bedroom, which turned out to be even more expansive than his already grand living room. The sight was breathtaking, but it wasn't just the opulence that left me speechless. There he stood, like a vision carved from dreams, at the foot of his colossal bed. Slowly, he unbuttoned his shirt, and it cascaded to the floor with a graceful ease, revealing a chiseled physique that made my knees tremble. "There you are," he said, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, as if he knew the effect he had on me. My heart seemed to skip a beat, and all I could do was stare, captivated by his presence. Each movement he made seemed deliberate, calculated to ensnare my every thought. "Like what you see?" he asked, a hint of self-assurance in his voice. "Very much so," I answered, trying to sound composed despite the rush of emotions swirling within me. "So you admit it's nice?" he teased, a playful glint in his eyes. "Did I say that out loud?" I blurted out, feeling my cheeks burn with embarrassment. He smirked, a knowing smile that made my heart skip a beat, as he moved toward his closet, casually pulling out some silk pajama bottoms and slipping off his pants. My nerves intensified as I tried to avert my gaze, focusing instead on a nearby alarm clock to distract myself. "Whoa, it's way past midnight. How long was I in that alley? How long have I been here?" I wondered in my thoughts, trying to piece together the events of the evening. "So... any chance I could get a ride home? I work kind of early tomorrow," I asked, hoping for a way to break the tension. "Then you need a good night's sleep now. You'll stay here tonight," he declared with an air of confidence. "Is that okay? I don't want to impose," I hesitated, feeling a mix of relief and uncertainty. "I wouldn't have offered if I wasn't okay with it. Besides, it might be nice having you around. The place has brightened a bit since you stepped inside," he said, his words unexpectedly warming my heart. "Are you sure you're not just trying to get in my pants?" I blurted out, unable to resist a hint of sarcasm. He laughs, putting my worries to rest. "I can assure you, nothing is going to happen between us tonight. You've been through enough without me trying to push things any further. The best thing for both of us is to get some sleep," he reassures me kindly. With a sense of relief, I watch as he gracefully slides into the luxurious bed, making himself comfortable. "I've got a big day tomorrow, and I'm sure you do too. You're welcome to share the bed; I promise to be a perfect gentleman," he says with sincerity, his eyes reflecting his honesty. "Besides..." he continues, patting the bed for emphasis, inviting me to join him in this vast space of comfort. "...when else are you going to get the chance to sleep in a bed this nice?" he teases, a playful glint in his eyes. "I think I'm choosing the couch," I reply, my determination evident. He shrugs nonchalantly, respecting my decision. "Suit yourself," he says, a hint of amusement in his tone. I make my way over to the bedside sofa, fluffing one of the pillows and settling in, trying to find comfort despite the situation. As I make myself comfortable, I can't help but sneak a glance at Axe. He leans his head back and closes his eyes, an air of peacefulness surrounding him. My eyelids grow heavy as sleep slowly wraps its arms around me, pulling me into its embrace. and with that I drift into a deep slumber.
