CHAPTER 2

I turned my attention towards the gorgeous man, trying to understand the situation unfolding before me. "Babe?" I repeated, this time adding a touch of bewilderment to my tone. Caught off guard by his question, I quickly snapped out of my thoughts and focused on the gorgeous man in front of me. "Uh, yeah, everything's okay," I replied, trying to play along with the unexpected charade. The drunk girl, who seemed unimpressed by our exchange, turned to the mystery man with a mocking smirk. "This is your girlfriend? Sure doesn't seem like much," she sneered. He didn't miss a beat, his expression unyielding. "Maybe to you, but we've been together for years now. Isn't that right, babe?" he said, his eyes meeting mine briefly, silently asking for my cooperation. I felt a mix of confusion and amusement, but I nodded, playing my part as the supposed girlfriend. "Yup, just... so happy together," I added, trying to sound convincing. The woman gave me a scornful look before taking a drunken step back. "Whatever, I got bigger fish to fry than this trout anyways," she slurred, stumbling away across the dance floor. The mystery man turned to me, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Did she just call me a trout?" I couldn't help but chuckle at the mystery man's question, finding humor in the absurdity of the situation. "Yes, she did indeed call you a trout," I replied with a playful grin. As our laughter subsided, I couldn't help but feel a rush of flustered excitement at his words. His deep voice sent shivers down my spine, and his striking eyes left me momentarily speechless. "Thanks, you really saved me there," he repeated, his gaze locking onto mine. I tried my best to keep my composure, but my mind was racing with a whirlwind of thoughts. "Uh, no problem," I managed to reply, my nerves betraying me. "I'd also ask if you come here often, but I don't think I've ever seen you here before," he remarked, prompting a playful response from me. "Oh, yeah? Maybe you just didn't notice me," I teased, trying to mirror the light-hearted banter we shared. "Trust me, I would've noticed. In fact, I don't think I'd be able to forget," he replied, causing my cheeks to flush a bright pink. "Come on, Scarlet, keep it together for God's sake," I muttered in my thoughts, attempting to compose myself. I desperately look around the bar where i spot Kacey watching from the sidelines. She's already jumping up and down, giving me an approving thumbs up. With a radiant smile that could light up the whole room, he leaned in slightly as I spoke, setting off a delightful dance of butterflies in my stomach. "You have a beautiful name," he said with a velvety tone, "and it's Axe." His words wrapped around my heart like a warm embrace. "Axe, it's nice to meet you," I replied, trying to conceal the excitement that surged through me. As he gazes into my eyes, a slow, smoldering grin spreads across his lips, setting my heart racing with anticipation. His words drip with charm and playful flirtation, sending a thrilling shiver down my spine. "Well, Scarlet," he purrs, his voice dipped in velvety smoothness, "I don't think I could imagine a better person to spend the evening with." His compliment ignites a blush on my cheeks, but I can't help but be drawn to his magnetic charisma. With a gesture as inviting as it is seductive, he extends his hands toward mine, leaving me powerless to resist. My pulse quickens as our fingers interlock, and he pulls me closer, a teasing glint in his eyes. The music surrounds us, enveloping us in its rhythm, while the world around fades away, leaving only the two of us in this enchanting dance. "Let's dance," he whispers, his voice a mere breath against my ear, but it sends a thrill through my entire being. The way he says it sounds more like a fact than a question, his confident demeanor sending a shiver down my spine. He pulls me with assurance out to the dance floor, and as soon as I find myself pressed close against his frame. In fact, I'm so close that every time he tries to lean in for more, I end up stepping on his toes. "Sorry about that," I said, apologizing, feeling a twinge of embarrassment for my lack of grace. Even as I apologize, I can feel my heel stab into the top of his expensive shoes, and I wince at the thought of damaging them further. "Sorry! Guess it's been a while since I've done this," I said, trying to laugh off my clumsiness. And then the song shifts, changing in tempo from a frantic club mix to something more slow-paced. Surprisingly, I manage to get through most of the song without crushing his toes, and a sense of relief washes over me. Hours seem to drift by as we chat and groove across the dance floor, the music enveloping us in its intoxicating rhythm. "There, see? Glad you're getting the hang of it. Not sure my toes could've taken much more abuse," he said, chuckling playfully. I can't help but shudder beneath his smoldering gaze, my knees feeling weak. His intensity is both captivating and unnerving. "Jeez, this guy is intense... but I can't honestly say I mind it. The way he looks at me, it's like I'm the only girl here tonight. Still... I don't know a single thing about Axe," I pondered in my thoughts, my curiosity piqued by this enigmatic stranger who had swept me off my feet on the dance floor. "So, what are you doing here tonight?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. Axe chuckled softly, his eyes glinting mischievously. "Until now, I just came to let off some steam. I rarely have the time to come out like this. But now that you're here, I guess I was looking for you all along. Besides, I'm much more interested in learning about you. What makes you tick, Scarlet?" he inquired, his voice carrying a hint of intrigue. "Guys. Guys make me tick," I blurted out, surprising even myself with my candid response. Axe's eyebrows shot up, a mixture of surprise and amusement playing across his handsome face. "Uhh...." I stumbled, realizing how forward and unexpected my answer was. "I'm sorry. You're just really hot, and I haven't done this in a while. I guess I'm just nervous," I awkwardly explained, feeling my cheeks flush with embarrassment. "Wow. Thank you for being honest," he said, his voice laced with a hint of admiration, appreciating her straightforwardness. As we both continue to dance, I feel the hours start to slip away, the music pulling us into a mesmerizing rhythm that seemed to elongate time itself the longer we stay on the dance floor. "Probably shouldn't stay out too late. I might not have the morning shift tomorrow, but I don't want to run myself ragged," I pondered in my thoughts, my mind torn between the desire to keep dancing and the responsibility of the upcoming day. "Listen, Axe, this was really fun... but I should probably get going," I said, reluctantly acknowledging the pressing reality. "You're leaving?" he asked, his expression a mix of surprise and disappointment. "Wish I wasn't, but I think I need to call it a night," I replied, my voice tinged with a hint of regret. "It's barely 10 PM," he remarked, a playful glint in his eyes, trying to persuade me to stay. "Still... Sorry! I've got work tomorrow," I replied, feeling a twinge of guilt at the thought of leaving the enchanting night behind. "Giving up a night of fun for your job?" he asked, a playful smirk playing on his lips, clearly impressed by my dedication. He can't help but smile, appreciating the mix of responsibility and fun-loving spirit that he sees in her. "Not gonna lie, I respect the hell out of your work ethic," he said, a glimmer of admiration in his eyes. I grinned, a mix of pride and playfulness dancing on my lips. "What can I say? I take my job seriously." With that, I gently slipped my hand out of his, feeling a subtle spark between us. Crossing the dimly lit dance floor, the pulsating music fading into the background, I took one last sweeping glance at the vibrant club. My heart was still racing from the excitement of the night as I made my way toward the exit, the cold night air rushing to greet me like an old friend. "Well, I guess that could've gone a lot worse," I chuckled softly to myself, my thoughts reflecting on the unexpected fun I had tonight. As I was about to raise my hand to hail a cab, a familiar voice cut through the night, calling my name from the doorway. Turning around, I saw him standing there, looking both dashing and concerned. "Scarlet, hold up a second," he called out urgently. "Axe, what are you doing here? You should be inside," I replied, genuinely surprised to see him there. "I know, but I wanted to make sure you found a ride. This area can get a little seedy at night," he said, his concern for my safety evident in his eyes. "Well, thanks. That's really sweet of you, but I can take it from here," I answered with a hint of gratitude in my voice, appreciating his concern but also eager to assert my independence. "Just get home safe, okay?" he said, his concern echoing in his eyes as he gazed at me. With that, he hailed me a cab, and I couldn't help but shoot him an appreciative smile as I slid inside. Despite my initial reservations about him, there was something undeniably captivating about Axe, something that left me wanting to know more. "It was really nice meeting you, Scarlet," he said, his words lingering in the air like a warm breeze. "You too... Axe," I replied, my voice slightly softer as I acknowledged the undeniable connection we'd formed, even in such a short time. I settled into the backseat of the cab, the engine humming softly, and the driver turned to me, asking, "Where are you headed?" I gave him an address, then allowed myself to relax, feeling the gentle vibrations of the cab's movement against my back. As the city lights streaked by outside the window, my mind couldn't help but drift back to Axe. "I can't help but think about Axe. Man, here I am, smiling like an i***t," I mused to myself, feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty. "I will admit it was nice meeting someone like that. Not to mention his sexy frame, voice, and face. No wonder a guy like that has my mind drifting." As the cab sped away, I found myself lost in a sea of daydreams. But my reverie was abruptly shattered when I realized that the driver had dropped me off in the worst possible part of town. "Crap, he must've heard the wrong address. This is just perfect," I muttered with frustration, my heart starting to race. The desolate street stretched out before me in every direction, devoid of any signs of life. But my solitude was short-lived as a sharp voice pierced through the eerie silence. "Well, would you look at this," sneered a thug-like man who seemed to materialize out of thin air. My heart sank further as another man chimed in, "You lost, little bird?" Two more shadowy figures emerged, flanking the first two, and to my horror, three more lurked in the background, forming a menacing circle around me. "Uh-oh...." My thoughts echoed with worry, panic beginning to bubble within. Summoning all the courage I could muster, I stood my ground, trying to appear unafraid despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "I'm not looking for trouble, guys. I promise... you don't want to do this," I stammered, my voice betraying my nervousness. My clutch bag suddenly felt heavier as I tightened my grip, knowing that a bottle of mace was my only line of defense, waiting just inside. The tension hung thick in the air, and my mind raced with thoughts of escape routes, praying I wouldn't have to resort to using the mace. "A bit late for that, little bird," the thug sneered, his voice laced with menace. He lunged forward, his grimy fingers outstretched, reaching for me like a predator closing in on its prey. Panic surged through me, and I instinctively tried to escape, my heart pounding in my chest. The alley stretched ahead of me, offering a glimmer of hope, but in my haste, my heels caught on the unforgiving asphalt, causing me to stumble and crash against the unyielding concrete below. A searing pain shot through my body, and I tasted the metallic tang of blood as my lip split from the impact. Just as fear threatened to engulf me, a sudden screeching of tires pierced the air, reverberating through the narrow passage. Blinding headlights illuminated the surroundings, causing the menacing thugs to stagger backward in surprise. And like a beacon of hope, a stretch limo emerged from the darkness, pulling up behind me with an air of grandeur and mystery. As the limo's door swung open, revealing its occupant, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was as if a character from a fairy tale had stepped into the real world. Out stepped Axe, a figure both enigmatic and imposing, exuding an aura of power and confidence that demanded attention. "Hey! Back away from the girl—now!"
