The darkness was abysmal. Anne was almost at the end of her strength. For the last little while she had had to support nearly the entire weight of her companion to keep him from falling. He still preserved his senses, for occasionally, in broken, gasping words, he blurted out directions; but it was obvious that he could go but little farther. She did not know where they were, for, though the distance had not been great, they had turned and twisted through a veritable labyrinth of lanes and areaways and narrow, smelly passages that had brought utter confusion to her, and, besides, her attention had been wholly concentrated on her efforts to help the man.
