Chapter Five: The Shattered Glass The alarm’s low red pulsing cast deep, blood-crimson shadows across the stone walls of the estate. The cold mountain rain whistled through the shattered glass of the far wing, bringing with it the unmistakable scent of ozone and cordite. Damian didn't flinch. He stood like an iron pillar in front of Elena, his gun raised, his eyes locked on the dark corridor that led into the main atrium. "Julian," Damian spoke into his wrist comms, his voice dangerously level. "Status." Static hissed in his ear before Julian’s voice cut through, rapid and heavy with breath. "We’re engaged at the south gate, boss! They staged a double-breach—distracted the perimeter team while an insertion squad took the lake house roof! They’re inside the main structure!" "Fallback to the subterranean vault," Damian commanded. "Contain the south wing. I have the package." He lowered his arm and turned to Elena. Her face was pale, but her hands were steady as she clutched the velvet case securely against her chest. "The north hallway leads to a reinforced shelter," Damian said, meeting her eyes. "There’s a private elevator hidden behind the wine cellar panel. It takes you straight to the lake tunnel." Elena looked at him, her golden-brown eyes narrowing sharply. "'Takes you'? You’re not coming?" "I am closing the door from this side," Damian replied, reaching out to press a heavy brass key into her palm. "If they breach the atrium, they cut off our only clean escape route. I buy you time, Elena. You get down there and seal the door." "No," Elena said firmly, her fingers closing tightly over the key—and his hand. "I’m not sitting in a dark bunker waiting to see who walks through the door. You told me earlier I was your vulnerability, Damian. Prove I’m not a liability. We move together." Damian stared at her, the dark storm in his grey eyes momentarily suspended by her fierce, unyielding resolve. Any other person would have taken the key and run. Elena stood her ground in the shadow of an advancing strike team, refusing to let him fight alone. A sudden burst of suppressed gunfire ripped through the wooden double doors at the end of the hall, splintering heavy oak into the air. "Together," Damian conceded, his voice a low, lethal promise. "Stay low and don't stop moving." He pulled her behind him, firing three rapid, suppressive shots down the corridor. A mercenary rounded the corner, clad in dark tactical gear, but Damian’s aim was instantaneous. The man dropped before his weapon could clear his hip. Damian grabbed Elena’s wrist, pulling her swiftly into the shadow of the grand staircase just as a hail of bullets tore through the plaster behind them. They moved with practiced synchronization through the dark, winding corridors of the estate. Damian operated with cold, terrifying precision—checking corners, neutralizing threats in close quarters before they could call out positions, and placing his body firmly between every line of fire and Elena. They reached the lower level near the wine cellar, the heavy concrete walls muting the gunfire echoing from the upper floors. Damian slammed his hand against a hidden panel in the stonework. A heavy slab of slate slid open with a low hydraulic groan, revealing a sleek, steel-reinforced elevator. Elena stepped inside, turning to hold the heavy frame. "Damian, get in!" Before Damian could step across the threshold, a heavy metallic thud echoed down the subterranean hallway. A tall man in a dark tactical coat stepped into the dim light. His face was scarred, his eyes cold and devoid of life—Victor Valenti, the ruthless head of the syndicate's forward faction. He held a high-caliber sidearm raised directly toward Damian's chest. "End of the line, Vance," Victor rasped, a cruel smile touching his lips. "You built a nice kingdom. Shame you ruined it all for a restorer." Victor’s eyes flicked past Damian’s shoulder, landing squarely on Elena. In that split second, the air in the corridor seemed to freeze. Damian didn't look back at Elena. He didn't check his surroundings. He didn't weigh the tactical odds. For the first time in his calculated, invincible life, Damian Vance reacted on pure, instinctual fear. Before Victor’s finger could complete its contraction on the trigger, Damian threw his body sideways, placing himself directly in the line of fire to cover Elena completely. BANG. A sharp, deafening gunshot shattered the enclosed space. Damian grunted as the heavy impact tore into his shoulder, spinning him around. Crimson bloomed fast against the pristine white fabric of his shirt. "Damian!" Elena screamed, her voice echoing off the stone walls. Driven by raw instinct, Elena lunged forward, grabbing the heavy iron fire extinguisher mounted beside the elevator door. With everything she had, she swung it into the side of Victor’s knee. A sickening crack echoed in the corridor. Victor roared in pain, losing his balance and tumbling heavily onto the concrete floor, his gun skittering across the smooth stone. Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed Damian under his uninjured arm, using her entire body weight to pull his massive frame back inside the elevator cab. She slammed her hand against the control panel, punching the emergency lock code. The heavy steel doors slammed shut just as Victor dragged himself up, his fists uselessly pounding against the reinforced metal. The elevator began its smooth, silent descent into the subterranean tunnels below. Inside the quiet enclosure, Damian slumped against the steel wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the polished floor. Blood was seeping rapidly through his fingers as he pressed his hand against his shoulder. "Damian—oh God, stay still," Elena gasped, dropping to her knees beside him. She ripped off her coat, tearing the silk lining of her sleeve to press it firmly against his wound. Damian winced, his breathing short and shallow, but his dark grey eyes remained fixed entirely on her face. Despite the pain, despite the blood, his expression wasn't one of defeat. It was awe. "You... swung a fire extinguisher," Damian muttered, a faint, breathy chuckle escaping his lips. "At a syndicate hitman." "Shut up," Elena whispered, her hands shaking as she held pressure against his shoulder, tears brimming in her golden-brown eyes. "You took a bullet for me, you idiot." Damian reached up with his uninjured hand, his blood-stained fingers gently touching her jawline, tipping her face up to meet his. "I told you," Damian whispered softly, his voice heavy but filled with a fierce, absolute truth. "You're the only variable I can't afford to lose." Elena leaned into his touch, her heart hammering wildly against her chest. The empire was burning above them, enemies were hunting them from the shadows, and the world they knew had dissolved into chaos. But as the elevator clicked into place in the subterranean darkness, locking them away from the storm, Elena knew one thing with absolute certainty: Damian Vance had spent his whole life proving he had no weakness. But in the quiet dark of the tunnel, covered in blood and holding her gaze, he had never looked more invincible.
