Chapter 014

Pain cut through her heart like a knife. Ryder had shattered the little hope she was holding onto. At this point, there was no saving it, her marriage had gone down the drain. A few minutes later, the stakeholders were done congratulating Sheila and everyone stood up to leave. But Sheila called Ivy back. She had no idea why she called her, and even Ryder tried to figure out why as he looked up at Sheila. "Ivy dear, I hope we get along well.. I'm now the MD of M&C designs".. She smiled, extending her hand for a handshake. Ivy stood for several minutes, her eyes on Sheila's frail hand. This was the woman who had destroyed her marriage _ a relationship she had built for the past three years of her life. "Ivy.." Sheila called, as Ivy got lost in her thoughts. "Yeah, welcome.." She replied, the shook her hand and darted off. Tears brimming in her eyes, she walked fast to her office. How could Ryder do this to their love? She seethed with anger and disappointment. Just then, she received an email on her phone. It was from X&Y bags. She clicked on it immediately. Her head nodded slowly as she went through the content. But she wouldn't do it, that wasn't her job at all. She had anticipated doing it previously because she thought she'd become the managing director, but now, someone else had occupied the position. The person could as well do her job. She ignored the email and began packing her stuff into a box. This offer could change her story for good and make her designs known globally, but what did it matter now? She'd have to leave. Her heart was heavy, and she felt like strangling to death. Even God in heaven knows she was dying to do this work, but Ryder's betrayal hurt more than losing this contract. She packed her books into another box, tears drowning her soul. Just then, her phone began ringing. She looked at the caller ID _ it was a new number. She didn't have this person in her contact list. Before she could finish thinking about it, it stopped ringing. She ignored it, but it came ringing again, Ivy picked it up. "Hello.." She spoke. "I see you don't take new calls?" A voice came through. Ivy's teeth clenched tightly, she needed no one to tell her who this voice belonged to. The woman had caused her nothing but pain since her arrival in California. She hated her so much _ if only she could disappear into thin air and leave them to go back to how they used to live before she came. But unfortunately, that never happened as now she has even become the managing director of her husband's company. "What do you want," Ivy muttered, her voice cold and resolute. "Come to my office now," Sheila muttered and hung up. Ivy scoffed painfully. The nerves. She ignored her and continued packing her stuff but something in her felt she should hear what she had to say. She dropped the box and walked out of her office. Not long after, she arrived at the managing director's office and placed soft knocks on the door. Even though she hated her, it was work ethics to always knock on your senior colleague's door before entering, she wouldn't lose her etiquette because of her. "Ivy, you can come in.. You don't have to be like that, it's us.. We are more than that right?" Sheila spoke, she was saying all that but her tone didn't match everything she was spewing. "It's okay, I'm here now, what do you want?" Ivy muttered. "I heard you were looking forward to this position?" Sheila spoke. Ivy's forehead creased, how dare she call her here to mock her? "What do you want?" She asked again, she didn't have any intentions to talk about her betrayal with the one who caused it. "Give me an answer!" Sheila muttered, her voice a bit commanding. Ivy scoffed, dressing her hair backward. She bit her lower lip. "I don't owe you any explanation about whatever I looked forward to, do I?" Ivy retorted. "I'm your boss now and you'll have to give me replies or do whatever I say!" She decreed. Ivy's forehead scrunched in anger, then she scoffed, Sheila was finally showing her true colors. She had been a fake and it wouldn't be long before she'd completely come out of her nice camouflage. "Or do you think I can't do anything to you because your husband owns this place? Aren't you reading the signs? Do you think Ryder still listens to you? If I said you can't work here anymore, do you think you can?" Ivy tightened her fist, her nails digging deep into her palms as she tried to control the emotions, anger simmering altogether in her chest. She came between her and her husband and sowed a seed of doubts, uncertainties in their marriage, how dare she stand there with light gleaming in her eyes and smile on her lips as though she had won a game? How more shameless could she be? She destroyed her marriage and even had the guts to shove it in her face. Ivy's heart seethed with resentment, her mind reeling with the injustice of it all. She felt she had been punched in the guts, her chest tightened, leaving her gasping for air. The room seemed to spin around as Sheila's words hung in the air, she was suffocating, Sheila was saying the truth, Ryder doesn't listen to her anymore _ and that was why she had made up her mind to leave. She was needed no more. "Anyways, that's not why I called you here.." Sheila's words cut through her anger, pulling her back from the edge. Ivy turned to leave, but Sheila's next words made her freeze. She spun back around, her eyes red and threatening.
