Chapter 1

439 Words
Friday September 30, 2019. I'm sitting here by the phone waiting for that one phone call that will determine the rest of my life. It will clarify if my writing is any good for the top women's magazine of New York, and if I have what it takes to work with the best. Nicole walks in and falls to the couch. "Rough day," I said. "You got it," she said. Nicole has been my best friend since as long as I can remember. We went to school together, college together, and now we are living together. Couldn't imagine my life without her. "What happened at work to get you all down in the dumps?" I asked. Nicole works at Coffee and Books, a coffee shop in downtown Manhattan. The book part comes from all the book worms that come in and have coffee and read. And I am one of those book worms. "Nothing, I'm just exhausted," she said. I pulled out a bottle of wine from beside the couch. "A drink?" Nicole reached for the glass sitting on the coffee table. "Well don't mind if I do. So tell me, have you been sitting next to that phone since you got off work?" "Maybe." She gave me a glance indicating that I'm lying. "Ok, yes," I said as I poured her wine in the cup. She took a sip. "Sarah, I know you better than anyone in this whole world. And I don't know anyone else whose writing is as even being close to good as yours is." "Really," I said. "Hell yeah! And I know you will get the job you have always dreamed about since we were little girls." With that being said the phone started to ring. I checked the caller ID. "It's them!" I shouted. "What do I do, omg I'm panicking." "Answer it crazy, she yelled." I picked up the phone to answer it. "Hello?" "Hi Sarah, this is Shine Your Life magazine and we wanted to let you know we looked over the article that you sent in and absolutely loved it. You got the job. And hope that you can come in Monday morning to discuss the rest." "Yes that'd be great." I hung up the phone and turned to Nicole with a gigantic smile on my face. "Guess who just got hired on at the top women's magazine of New York!" I screamed and shouted. We both screamed and danced crazily around our apartment. Nicole popped open another bottle of wine and we celebrated. Now its time to wait until Monday to see where the rest of life takes me.
