Chapter Eight

“Do it again.” “Do it again.” “Do it again.” These were the words Chloe had heard multiple times this week. Sometimes her boss didn’t have to look at it for him to say those words. Chloe dropped the file on Logan’s desk, and he raised one eye to look at her. Again, Logan observed how beautiful she looked this mid-afternoon; her hair was in a ponytail this time. Then, he withdrew his gaze and focused on his work. “do it again.” Chloe grimaced. “Sir, I _.” Logan interrupted her. “I asked you to do one job. If you are going to complain about it, then you should just quit.” “Sir, I was going to ask if that was all?” He nodded. Chloe carried the documents back, and when she reached her desk, she slammed the files hard that even poor Amy was terrified. “Is everything ok?” Amy asked with concern in her voice. “Yes,” Chloe said with a polite smile. “I know Mr. Ford can be harsh, but he is really nice once you get to know him.” Amy would be saying that if she was the one missing lunch, Chloe thought. By the end of the closing time, Chloe was not done with her work, and more were piling up. It was the first time since she joined the company that she had decided to do overtime. Logan returned with his suitcase to see his assistant still at her desk. “What are you still doing here by this time?” he asked at the front of his door. Chloe pulled out her glasses and placed them on the floor. “I am not done with the work assigned to me.” “We don’t do overtime here. Maybe next time you read the company manual before you start working for my company.” “But I am not done with my work, and it is due tomorrow morning” it was the first time Chloe had complained since she worked here. “Then you are not cut out for this work.” He passed her table. “And also, carrying any company files will deem you a company spy. You will be sued and fired if you are caught.” Every plan of Chloe finishing this work at home was canceled. Chloe got home feeling more stressed than ever in the last week she had worked at Ford enterprise. Her home was her only comfort; she lived in a Condo. The sitting room had 3 long white sofas and 2 dark blue comfortable chairs. At the edge of the room was a mini bar. During her personal time, Chloe loves to make cocktails. So an Arabic prince she met on her trip to Dubai paid for the mini bar. A gift he called it was for her exquisite taste in drinks. Chloe kicked her nude shoe and hung her coat on the hanger. She tossed her bag to one of the sofas and went to the bar to take a shot of vodka. When she was done, she moved to her bedroom. Chloe’s bedroom had a balcony attached to it with no windows. The door leading to the balcony was made of transparent glass. The room was colored grey. She had bought this condo the moment she saw the balcony. It was her favorite place in the house apart from the bar. Chloe removed all her layers of clothes and tossed them in the laundry basket. Then, finally, she moved to the large bathroom, which had a tub and a shower. Surrounding the tub and shower was transparent glass. Chloe slid the glass open and turned on the shower. Her towel hung on the right edge between the glass and the side mirror. Below the mirror was a sink. After she was done, she rubbed her legs on the mat and took the towel to wrap her body. She had changed into her night robe before leaving the bathroom that was hung near the bathroom door. Chloe lay on her bed thinking of tomorrow, another day to work for Logan Ford. This was the luxury life of Chloe Martini, the assistant of Logan Ford. Besides the security guards, Chloe was among the first people to be at work. By 8am, she was done with her work and by 9am, she was prepared for the board meeting. There were twelve chairs, six on each side, and a head chair for the CEO. Chloe sipped her cup of coffee, which she had made at the assistant lounge, before placing it back on her desk. Then, she took her notepad and phone into the board room. “What are you doing here?” Logan asked her in front of all the board members and assistants as soon as she entered. She halted as he spoke. Chloe knew she was late, but she had been busy arranging the board room before getting her morning coffee. “Attending the meeting?” she questioned herself. “You are not yet a staff member. Come back if you make it up to a month” Chloe bit her lips, all eyes on her. Amy bent her head down, avoiding any eye contact with her. “Yes, Sir,” she said before leaving the room humiliated. “Miss Martini?” He called her back. She stepped on her heels and twisted “Can you get coffee for everyone here?” She gulped and responded, “ Yes, Sir.” #7. The hook and bait: just like in fishing, patience is essential. While you set the bait, you wait for the fish to eat the bait and get hooked. Waiting is part of the game.
