Chapter 8: The Shattered Rules

1247 Words
The kiss inside the dimly lit executive elevator was electric, consuming, and fiercely real. For days, Evelyn had tried to remind herself that Ethan Mercer was just a temporary husband—a ruthless businessman playing a strategic game. But as his soft lips pressed passionately against hers, his warm hand gently cupping the back of her neck, every boundary, contract, and rule they had carefully established dissolved into thin air. Ethan pulled her closer, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist until there was no space left between them. Evelyn’s fingers tangled into his thick, dark hair, letting out a soft sigh that sent a surge of pure desire straight through Ethan’s chest. When the elevator chimed, announcing their arrival at the top floor, Ethan slowly pulled back. His chest was heaving, his dark gray eyes blown wide with dark, uninhibited hunger. "Evelyn..." Ethan breathed, his voice raspier and deeper than she had ever heard it before. His thumb gently traced her lower lip, which was slightly swollen from his touch. "That wasn't part of the contract." Evelyn looked up at him, her face flushed and her heart pounding like a trapped drum. "Do you still think this is just a contract, Ethan?" Ethan searched her eyes for a long, agonizing moment. A battle raged behind his intense gaze—the constant struggle between his need to protect her by keeping his distance and his overwhelming, uncontrollable desire to possess her heart. Without a word, Ethan took her hand in his, his fingers interlacing firmly with hers, and led her out of the elevator into the quiet warmth of Penthouse A. The penthouse was silent, illuminated only by the soft, ambient glow of the New York skyline filtering through the glass walls. Ethan discarded his tuxedo jacket on a armchair and loosened his tie, though his eyes never left Evelyn as she stepped into the living room, her crimson silk gown flowing around her. "Richard is gone," Evelyn said softly, breaking the thick silence as she walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window. "The board unanimously supported you tonight. You won, Ethan." Ethan walked up behind her, his tall frame looming over her. He didn't stop until his chest was lightly brushing against her back. The faint, intoxicating scent of his sandalwood cologne enveloped her senses once again. "Richard was just a pawn, Evelyn," Ethan murmured near her hair. "He was ambitious, greedy, and foolish. But he wasn't the mastermind behind my parents' murder ten years ago." Evelyn turned around slowly in his arms to face him. "What do you mean?" "The encrypted drive we seized from Richard’s chief of security revealed something else," Ethan explained, his expression growing serious and dark. "Richard thought he was in total control. But his off-shore accounts were being funded by a ghost corporation registered in Switzerland—the exact same shell company that hired the hitmen ten years ago." Evelyn’s breath hitched. "So whoever killed your parents... was using Richard to destroy you from the inside?" "Yes," Ethan said, his gray eyes turning as cold as liquid nitrogen. "Richard was a tool. The real enemy is still hiding in the shadows, waiting for me to make a mistake." He reached out, his long fingers softly caressing her cheek. "Which brings us back to rule number two, Evelyn. The closer you get to me, the more dangerous your life becomes. Tonight, when I kissed you in that elevator... I broke my own rule. I showed the world—and the enemy—that you are my absolute weak spot." Evelyn looked up into his stormy eyes, seeing the genuine fear and fierce protectiveness buried beneath his cold facade. She reached up and placed her small hand over his, pressing his palm firmly against her cheek. "Then let them try, Ethan," Evelyn whispered, her voice filled with unwavering courage. "I survived my family's financial downfall, I survived your uncle's threats, and I am not going to run away from you now. Stop treating me like a fragile glass doll." Ethan stared at her, deeply stunned by her resilience. A soft, breathless laugh escaped his lips—a sound so rare and beautiful it made Evelyn's stomach flutter with butterflies. "You really are unbelievable, Mrs. Mercer," Ethan murmured, leaning down until his forehead rested against hers. "I brought you into my life to play a simple role... and instead, you became the only thing keeping me sane." "Ethan..." Evelyn breathed. Before she could finish his name, Ethan claimed her lips again. But this time, there was no hesitation, no holding back, and no restraint. The kiss was deep, possessive, and filled with a raw, undeniable passion that consumed them both. Ethan lifted her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her out of the living room and down the dimly lit hallway into his master bedroom. That night, beneath the soft moonlight pouring through the tall windows, the cold, fake marriage dissolved completely. There were no financial agreements, no corporate strategies, and no hidden agendas—only two souls finding warmth and salvation in each other's arms in the middle of a gathering storm. *** The next morning, the bright sun woke Evelyn up. She opened her eyes slowly, feeling a deep, peaceful warmth she hadn't felt in years. She was lying in the massive king-sized bed, wrapped in luxurious silk sheets, with Ethan’s strong arm wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. Evelyn looked at his sleeping face. Without his harsh scowl and calculating gaze, Ethan looked surprisingly vulnerable, almost relaxed. She reached out with a faint smile, gently running her fingers through his dark hair. Ethan’s eyes fluttered open immediately, his piercing gray gaze locking onto hers. A soft, genuine smile spread across his handsome face as he pulled her closer, pressing a warm kiss to her forehead. "Good morning, Mrs. Mercer," Ethan whispered softly, his voice heavy with sleep. "Good morning," Evelyn blushed slightly, resting her head on his bare chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "It feels surreal." "It's real," Ethan murmured, his hand gently stroking her bare back. "And I don't intend to let you go." Before they could share another quiet moment, a harsh, urgent alarm blared from Ethan’s nightstand. It was his primary encrypted satellite phone—the dedicated line reserved exclusively for *Project Nightfall*. Ethan’s posture stiffened slightly, though he kept his arm around Evelyn as he reached over and answered the call on speaker. "Report," Ethan commanded sharply. "Mr. Mercer!" the frantic voice of his Swiss chief security officer echoed into the quiet room. "We have an emergency at the Geneva medical facility!" Evelyn sat up quickly, pulling the sheet over her chest, watching Ethan’s face turn instantly into hard stone. "What happened?" Ethan growled. "The witness... she woke up from her coma ten minutes ago," the officer reported, his breath ragged over the static. "She's conscious, sir. But she refused to speak to anyone except you." Ethan’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "Did she give a reason?" "Yes, sir," the officer replied nervously. "She said... she said she knows the real identity of the mastermind behind your parents' murder. And she warned that the assassin is currently inside New York, targeting your wife." Evelyn’s blood instantly ran ice-cold. She looked at Ethan, whose jaw was clenched tight with lethal fury, his hand tig htening around her hand like a vise. The war wasn't over. It was just getting started.
