Chapter 7: Counter-Attack

1610 Words
The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Penthouse A, casting long streaks of golden light across the polished wooden floors. Evelyn sat at the massive marble dining table, a steaming cup of chamomile tea cradled in her hands. Her father was now fully stable at the hospital, surrounded by Ethan’s elite security team. For the first time in days, the suffocating knot in her chest had loosened. The soft sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Evelyn looked up to see Ethan walking in, looking impossibly sharp in a charcoal-grey three-piece suit. He was buttoning his jacket, his dark hair styled flawlessly. "You're up early," Ethan noted smoothly, pulling out a chair opposite her and sitting down. A maid quietly placed a cup of black coffee in front of him before retreating. "I couldn't sleep," Evelyn admitted softly, watching him take a slow sip of his coffee. "I was thinking about what you said last night. About taking the offensive against Richard." Ethan placed his cup down with a soft click, his piercing gray eyes locking onto hers. "Richard tried to break you to get to me. He played a dirty card by targeting your father. Now, it's my turn to play." "What's the plan?" Evelyn asked, leaning forward slightly. "Tonight is the annual Mercer Board Dinner," Ethan said, a cold, calculating glint flashing in his eyes. "Every major shareholder, board member, and investor will be attending. Richard plans to present a motion to vote me out of the Chairman position, claiming I am distracted and unfit due to my sudden marriage." Evelyn’s brows furrowed. "He's using our marriage as a weapon?" "Yes," Ethan replied, leaning back in his chair. "He expects us to panic or appear fractured under pressure. Instead, we are going to walk into that boardroom holding hands, unified, and utterly unflappable. But more importantly..." Ethan reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a dark blue encrypted flash drive, and placed it on the table between them. "This drive contains the complete financial trail linking Richard's offshore accounts to the black-market supplier who provided the toxin for your father," Ethan murmured, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register. "During the dinner, before Richard can even call for a vote, I am going to expose his treason in front of every single board member." Evelyn looked at the flash drive, her heart beating rapidly. "And where do I fit into this?" Ethan reached across the table, his large, warm hand covering hers. The unexpected contact sent a jolt of warmth straight up her arm. "You are my secret weapon, Evelyn," Ethan said, his voice laced with an intimate intensity that made her breath hitch. "Richard thinks you are a weak, terrified girl trapped in a fake marriage. Tonight, you are going to stand beside me as the formidable, unbreakable Mrs. Mercer. I need you to hold your head high, play the role of my fiercely loyal wife, and watch him crumble." Evelyn looked down at their joined hands, feeling the strength and unwavering resolve radiating from him. The cold, distant billionaire who had forced her into a contract was gone; in his place was a partner who trusted her to stand by his side in a war. "I won't let you down, Ethan," Evelyn whispered, squeezing his hand in return. Ethan’s gaze softened just a fraction, his thumb lightly caressing the back of her hand before he slowly pulled back. "I know you won't. Wear something red tonight, Evelyn. Let him see the flame before he gets burned." *** At seven o'clock sharp, the Maybach pulled up to the grand entrance of the Mercer Tower Executive Suite. Evelyn stepped out of the car, looking stunning in a floor-length, deep crimson silk gown with an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline. Her dark hair was swept up into a sophisticated bun, leaving her neck long and graceful, adorned only by the diamond necklace Ethan had given her. Ethan offered his arm, looking at her with an expression that was dangerously close to awe. "You are breathtaking, Mrs. Mercer." "Let's go win a war, Mr. Mercer," Evelyn replied, sliding her hand through his arm with a confident smile. When they entered the grand private dining room on the top floor, the atmosphere was thick with tense corporate politics. Twenty of the world’s most powerful investors and board members were seated around a long mahogany conference table, whispering hushed conversations. At the head of the table sat Richard Mercer, looking like a vulture waiting for its prey. When Ethan and Evelyn walked in, hand in hand, the hushed whispers stopped immediately. Camera flashes flickered from the media personnel permitted at the edge of the room. "Ah, Ethan! Evelyn!" Richard stood up, spreading his arms with fake warmth, though his eyes were sharp and suspicious. "We were just discussing the company’s future direction. Glad you could make it." "Wouldn't miss it for the world, Uncle," Ethan said smoothly, pulling out a plush leather chair for Evelyn before taking his own seat at the opposite end of the table. "Before we begin dinner," Richard announced loudly, tapping his spoon against his crystal glass to command attention, "I believe we must address a pressing concern. As the senior board member, I have called for an emergency vote of confidence regarding Ethan’s leadership as CEO." A collective gasp echoed across the room. Board members looked uncomfortably at each other. Richard smiled cruelly, looking directly at Evelyn. "Over the past few weeks, Ethan has engaged in erratic personal decisions, including a rushed, suspicious marriage to a woman whose family business was facing total bankruptcy. He used company assets to bail out her family and has been distracted by personal drama. Mercer Enterprises requires a focused, stable leader—not someone distracted by a temporary romance." Evelyn felt a surge of anger, but she remembered Ethan's instructions. She kept her posture regal, a calm, polite smile playing on her lips as she looked back at Richard without a single flinch. "Are you finished, Richard?" Ethan asked calmly, leaning back in his chair as if he were discussing the evening weather. "The facts speak for themselves, nephew," Richard sneered, holding up a folder. "I have the motion signed by three senior members to initiate the vote right now." Ethan slowly reached into his suit jacket, pulled out the dark blue flash drive, and tossed it onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid smoothly across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Richard's glass. "Before anyone votes," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding tone that silenced the entire room, "I suggest the board plugs that drive into the main projector screen." Richard’s confident smirk faltered slightly. "What is this nonsense?" "It contains the forensic accounting reports from the Swiss Banking Authority, Uncle," Ethan murmured, his gray eyes pinning Richard with lethal intensity. "Along with the encrypted communication logs between your chief of security and the black-market supplier who attempted to poison my father-in-law two nights ago." The room erupted into absolute chaos. Board members leaned forward, whispering frantically, while Richard’s face turned from pale to a deep, embarrassed red. "This is a lie! A desperate frame-up!" Richard shouted, his voice trembling with sudden panic. "Is it?" Evelyn chimed in softly, her clear, elegant voice cutting through the noise. She looked around the table at the shocked board members. "My father was attacked because my husband was closing in on financial embezzlement within the Mercer Logistics division—embezzlement traced directly to Richard Mercer’s private holdings." Ethan looked at Evelyn, a flash of deep pride and fierce affection burning in his stormy gray eyes. She had played her part flawlessly. Ethan stood up, his tall frame looming over the entire boardroom like an untouchable king. "Federal authorities have already been handed duplicate copies of these files, Richard," Ethan stated coldly. "By tomorrow morning, your assets will be frozen, and your seat on this board will be revoked permanently." Two uniformed federal agents stepped through the double doors of the dining room, moving directly toward Richard. Richard looked around desperately, but every single board member turned their heads away, abandoning him instantly. As the agents escorted a furious, cursing Richard out of the room, Ethan turned to the remaining board members. "Now," Ethan said smoothly, taking Evelyn's hand in his and raising it gently to press a lingering, warm kiss against her knuckles in front of everyone. "If there are no further questions about my leadership... let us enjoy dinner." The board members immediately broke into relieved applause, praising Ethan’s decisive victory. Later that night, as they stepped back into the quiet, dimly lit elevator of Mercer Tower, Evelyn leaned her head back against the glass wall, letting out a long breath. "That was incredible," she whispered, looking up at him. "We actually did it." Ethan stepped closer to her, closing the space between them until there was no air left to breathe. The cold, corporate strategist was gone; in his eyes burned a raw, dangerous, and undeniable hunger. "You were extraordinary, Evelyn," Ethan murmured softly, his hand reaching out to gently cup her neck, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her collarbone. "You stood beside me and fought like you belonged to me." "Maybe I do," Evelyn whispered softly, her heart hammering wildly as she looked into his eyes, no longer afraid of the danger surrounding him. Ethan didn't hold back any longer. He bent his head down and captured her lips in a deep, pas sionate kiss that shattered every rule, every contract, and every boundary they had ever built between them.
