The high-security private wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor connected to Evelyn’s father.
Evelyn sat on a small chair beside the hospital bed, her fingers tightly holding her father's pale, motionless hand. The color had slowly returned to his face thanks to the emergency antidote administered by Ethan’s personal medical team, but the terrifying shock of nearly losing him still hung heavily over her heart.
The door to the private room clicked open softly. Ethan stepped inside, having stripped off his formal tuxedo jacket. His dark hair was slightly messy, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked exhausted, yet an aura of lethal authority still radiated from him.
"The head surgeon and two nurses on shift have been placed under strict interrogation by my security team," Ethan said quietly, his voice dangerously steady as he stopped beside her chair. "The toxic chemical found in your father's IV line was an unlisted neuro-inhibitor. It wasn't a hospital mistake, Evelyn. It was deliberate."
Evelyn closed her eyes, a shudder passing through her entire body. Tears spilled silently down her cheeks. "Why would anyone do this to him? He’s an innocent man, Ethan! He doesn't even know anything about Mercer Enterprises!"
Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He looked down at her small, trembling frame, and something inside his cold, guarded heart shattered. Without saying a word, he reached down, caught her gently by the waist, and lifted her up from the chair, pulling her straight into his broad chest.
Evelyn didn't pull away. She buried her face against his shoulder, her hands gripping the fabric of his shirt tightly as silent sobs wracked her body.
Ethan wrapped his long arms securely around her, resting his chin lightly on the top of her dark hair. His hands were warm, firm, and overwhelmingly comforting against the cold fear consuming her.
"They didn't target him because of who he is, Evelyn," Ethan whispered into her hair, his low voice vibrating against her chest. "They targeted him because of who you are to me."
Evelyn lifted her tear-stained face to look up at him. "Because... because I'm your wife?"
"Because Richard thinks you are my anchor," Ethan murmured, his gray eyes searching hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "He wanted to test my reaction. He wanted to see if I would abandon my corporate focus to protect your family."
"And did you?" she asked softly, her breath catching in her throat as she realized how close their faces were.
"I called in three international specialists, shut down an entire hospital wing, and personally threatened the board of directors within twenty minutes," Ethan said, his thumb reaching out to gently wipe away a tear from her cheek. "You tell me, Mrs. Mercer."
The air between them instantly grew heavy, thick with a sudden, electrifying tension. Looking into his dark gray eyes, Evelyn realized that despite their legal contract and fake rules, Ethan Mercer cared about her—far more than he was willing to admit out loud.
"Thank you, Ethan," she whispered, leaning her forehead softly against his chest, listening to the rapid, strong beating of his heart. "For saving him."
"Nobody touches what belongs to me," Ethan growled softly, his hand lingering at the nape of her neck, his fingers gently caressing her skin. "I swore an oath to protect you when you signed that paper. I intend to keep it."
Before Evelyn could reply, Ethan’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen. It was an urgent text message from his head of security: *'The suspect from the pharmacy lab has been detained. He is in the holding garage.'*
Ethan’s eyes turned back to hard flint. The soft, tender protector vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless strategist.
"Stay here with your father," Ethan instructed, his voice dropping into a firm, commanding tone. "My guards are standing right outside this door. No one enters without my personal authorization."
"Where are you going?" Evelyn asked, her hand instinctively clutching his wrist.
Ethan looked down at her small hand on his wrist, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "To deliver a message to my uncle."
Ten minutes later, in the dim, concrete basement of Mercer Tower’s private underground facility, a middle-aged man in a hospital lab coat was tied securely to a metal chair. Blood trickled from his lip, and he was trembling uncontrollably.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Ethan walked in, followed by two imposing men dressed in dark tactical gear.
Ethan pulled up a chair, placing it directly in front of the bound man, and sat down calmly, crossing one leg over the other. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver fountain pen—the exact pen Evelyn had used to sign their marriage contract.
"Do you know what this is, Dr. Vance?" Ethan asked smoothly, turning the pen between his long fingers.
"P-Please, Mr. Mercer!" the doctor stammered, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "I was paid! A man offered me two hundred thousand dollars in cash! My family was threatened!"
"I don't care about your family, doctor," Ethan said, his voice entirely devoid of human emotion, as cold as ice. "I care about the fact that you injected poison into my father-in-law's body."
Ethan leaned forward, his gray eyes pinning the man like a butterfly to a board. "You have thirty seconds to give me the exact digital transfer records and the identity of the middleman who handed you the cash. If you refuse... you will spend the rest of your life in a black-site facility in Eastern Europe, and your medical license won't be the only thing that gets destroyed."
"It was Marcus!" the doctor burst out, weeping hysterically. "Marcus Vance! Richard Mercer’s chief chief of security! He gave me the toxin! I have the encrypted wire transfer on my phone!"
Ethan slowly stood up, adjusting his cuffs. He looked down at the weeping man with pure disgust.
"Get his phone, extract the data, and hand him over to the federal authorities for attempted murder," Ethan commanded his security team coldly.
As he walked out of the holding room, his head of security stepped up beside him. "Sir, we have proof linking Richard's chief of security to the hospital attack. We can take this to the police or the board."
"No," Ethan said, a dark, lethal glare flashing in his eyes as he looked out into the New York night. "Taking him to the police is too easy. Richard wants a war? I am going to dismantle his entire empire piece by piece."
Ethan pulled out his phone and dialed Evelyn’s number. The moment she answered, hearing her soft voice on the line instantly smoothed away the brutal edge of his fury.
"Ethan? Is everything okay?" she asked anxiously.
"Everything is handled, Evelyn," Ethan said, his tone softening dramatically as he stepped into his private elevator. "Your father is completely safe now. I am coming back to the hospital to take you home."
"Ethan... we need to talk about what happens next," Evelyn said softly over the phone.
"We will," Ethan replied, looking at his reflection in the elevator glass, his hand gently touching the silver pen
in his pocket. "Starting tomorrow, Mrs. Mercer... we stop playing defense."
