The Contract

Kaitlyn left a note on Maya's bed, stating that she would be back after three days and then she left the dorm. She was supposed to see her mother right away but Gray had insisted on seeing her that afternoon to discuss their deal. She was terrified. She didn't know the man, what he was capable of or why she had a deep feeling that something terrible was going to happen. Despite all of that, she still had to meet him, her mother's life depended on it and that was enough to make her desperate. Gray had instructed her to meet him at his office, and luckily, it wasn't very far from her school. She arrived there within twenty minutes. Her jaw dropped at the sight of the huge and complex building in front of her. The skyscraper towered over the others beside it, making them appear inferior. She couldn't help but wonder if Gray was really the CEO of the place, was he really that wealthy? Gathering the courage, she stepped into the reception, the sweet scent and cold air causing her to feel relaxed instantly. A lot of people were walking around, and many of them stole glances at her, making her double-check to see if she was wearing anything off. Deciding to ignore the stares she was getting, she walked up to the smartly dressed receptionist who flashed a smile at her. “Welcome to GR group, what can I do for you?” “Um.. I'm here to see Mr Robinson.” Kaitlyn replied but the receptionist glared at her, her nose scrunched as she wondered what the boss would want with such a basic girl. “What's your name?” “Kaitlyn Brooks.” After running her name through the system, the receptionist shook her head, “I'm sorry Miss Brooks, you don't have an appointment so I can't let you in.” Kaitlyn's nose flared in annoyance, why didn't Gray tell his receptionist that she was coming? It was unprofessional and embarrassing. “But..” The ringing phone made her swallow her words and the receptionist excused herself to answer the call. Shortly after the call, she smiled at Kaitlyn. “Apologies Miss Brooks, that was my boss. You can go up to meet him. His office is on the sixth floor, the office at the end of the hallway.” Kaitlyn nodded, thanked her and left for the elevator. She felt queasy as the elevator went up, she couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen. She was picking away at her fingernails when the elevator dinged open, revealing a hallway. She gulped and walked out, her eyes fixed on the door at the end of the hallway. Kaitlyn placed a knock on the door and waited for a response, her breathing shallow and her heart filled with uncertainty. “Come in.” A familiar voice ordered from inside, making shivers run down her spine. She pushed the door open and made her way into the luxurious office. She couldn't stop admiring it. It was bigger than her room and had a whole living area within it. Her eyes moved to the man sitting on the chair, facing the windows instead of her. His minty cologne filled her nostrils, making her shudder. “Good day sir.” She cleared her throat. The chair swung around, revealing the nearly perfect man. He was even more good looking than she remembered, with his perfectly chiseled chin and defined jawline. She couldn't help but notice his Roman nose, which sat perfectly between his gorgeous hazelnut brown eyes. “Miss Brooks. Welcome, take a seat please.” He flashed her a smile, his elbows on his desk. Kaitlyn noticed something sinister about his smile. “So, you decide to call after a whole year! Let me guess, your boyfriend broke up with you?” He scoffed and she clenched her fists under the desk, trying hard to hide her annoyance. His overly cocky voice had a way of getting under her skin. “I don't think that's important. We're here to talk about the deal.” She told him with a straight face and he smirked. “It's a contract, not a deal.” “Whatever, let's get it over with.” She sat back on the chair, folding her arms. Gray opened one of his drawers and pulled out a document which he threw at Kaitlyn. She glanced at him and then back at the papers before picking them up. “What is this?” “The contract. Mind you, you are legally bound by that contract as soon as you sign it. If you go contrary to anything stated there, then you'll spend your life in jail.” He read out and she was quite surprised. “Slow down. I haven't even read through the contract yet!” She rolled her eyes, flipping the pages open as her eyes scanned each and every sentence. “Wait.. what!?” Kaitlyn's neck suddenly snapped up to stare at Gray who was simply smiling at her. She took another glance at the page to make sure that she had read correctly the first time. “A marriage contract? You didn't say anything about a marriage contract! You said you wanted me to be your mistress!” She fired, appearing distraught. Gray leaned in, “Well, I changed my mind. This is what I want now. You'll marry me in exchange for all the money you can ever think of. Not only do you get to enjoy my wealth, you get all the privileges that come with being Mrs Robinson.” He explained, dusting his suit in pure pride. “Plus,” he continued, “it's just for a year. We'll divorce after that and you'll be free to go.” “Why? What's the point of that?” Kaitlyn's eyebrows furrowed. “You’ll get to know that after you sign the contract.” He smirked. Kaitlyn was displeased. She was willing to sleep with a man that she didn't know for some money, but there was no way that she was going to get married to a total stranger! “I can't do this, I'm sorry but I can't.” She rose to her feet, politely pushing the documents back to Gray who did not even react. He simply watched her with a straight face, his unwavering glare making her uncomfortable. “Kaitlyn, don't forget that you need the money.” “I'll find another way. I can't marry you! I don't even know you!” She spat in anger. “Dear Kaitlyn, you know me more than you think.” He muttered. “But it's fine, do what you want. You may leave, but when you change your mind, I'll be here waiting.” He smirked and turned his attention to his laptop like she wasn't even there anymore. Kaitlyn was visibly pissed, she wondered where the man got his guts from. He spoke to her like he was so sure that she would come back. However, she made up her mind to leave and never return. What was she even thinking when she accepted the offer in the first place? Kaitlyn left the office and headed straight home to see her mother. She was shocked when she got home and met the doctor there, giving her unconscious mother a check up. “Oh my goodness!” She rushed over to bed, grabbing her mother's palm. “What happened to her!? Mom!” “She had a seizure, but luckily, a neighbor called me and I arrived just in time. She would have been dead by now.” The doctor explained and Kaitlyn bit her lip, the pain in her heart growing. Her mother had been in the hospital for months, she was discharged a few weeks ago after the doctors confirmed that she was strong enough to go home. But a seizure!? “Kaitlyn, your mother's life is in danger. The tumor is growing so much that if we don't do the surgery immediately, she might not survive up to a month.” The doctor's words shattered Kaitlyn's heart. Tears streamed down her face, fear engulfing her immediately. Where was she going to get thousands of dollars for the surgery? “Mom.. please don't leave me.” She sobbed uncontrollably over her mother's body after the doctor had left. Her mind drifted to Gray's deal, but she tried to ignore it. She tried very hard but she could not deny the fact it was her only way out. The thought of marrying someone she knew nothing about made her sick but she had no other option. “I'll get you treated mom, I promise.” She kissed her mother's head before leaving the house in a hurry. —— “I'm ready to sign the contract.” Kaitlyn stood with red cheeks in front of the charismatic billionaire, filled with regret but fueled by desperation. “That was fast, it's just been two hours.” He chuckled but she rolled her eyes. “Well, here you go. Feel free to go through the terms and conditions.” He tossed the papers over to her, handing her a pen as well. Kaitlyn sighed deeply, blinking back her tears as she slowly signed her signature on the papers. Gray stared at her, his eyes filled with sinister intentions. “Gotcha.” He muttered under his breath.
