“Where are we going?” Kaitlyn asked, batting her lashes at Gray who was too busy focusing on driving. They had gotten into his car after signing the contract and they had been on the road for ten minutes already.
“You're going to meet my mother.” Gray answered and Kaitlyn's eyes widened, her heart sinking instantly. She wasn't expecting to meet her mother-in-law so soon, but it was not a shock. Gray wanted the wedding to happen as quickly as possible.
“Does it have to be today?” She asked, folding her arms. Gray took a glance at her before turning to face the road again, his car gliding swiftly across the free highway.
“Yes.”
“You still haven't told me why you want to get married.”
Gray knew that she would start asking questions sooner or later. If he wasn't bound by the contract as well, he would have never told her, he loved his privacy and would never reveal his personal problems to outsiders.
“My father died eleven months ago. In his will, he left his inheritance to me.” He paused and let out a scoff. “He told the lawyer to give everything to charity if I didn't get married within a year of reading the will, I have just a month left, and that's where you come in.”
Kaitlyn nodded her head, “Why didn't you just get married like every normal person?” She scoffed.
“Because I'd rather f**k hoes that give my heart to one.” He smirked and she fumed, looking away immediately.
Gray didn't mind losing his father's inheritance to charity, he had his own money after all. But, his mother threatened to take her own life if he allowed his father's hard work to go down the drain. He had no other choice but to get married.
They were both silent for the rest of the drive, but they soon arrived at Gray's mansion. A staggering high rise building that left onlookers in awe of its beauty. Kaitlyn admired the beautiful mansion as soon as she stepped down. She was quick to notice all the guards in the compound and some maids walking to and fro. Gray was indeed a billionaire.
“Come on.” His voice jolted her out of her thoughts and she walked briskly behind him, following him into the mansion.
“I hope you remember the rules guarding the contract?” Gray questioned as soon as they got into the elevator.
Kaitlyn sighed. How could she forget his rules? Some of them were ridiculous.
No visitors allowed, no one must know that they signed a contract agreement, she was required to follow his laid down rules and obey his instructions, no talking in high-class events. And the most important rule to him; no feelings attached. She was required to never fall for him, and she didn't see that happening either. She had no idea if she was obligated to sleep with him, and she was too afraid to ask.
“Yes, I remember.” She nodded.
“Good. Be on your best behavior when you meet my mom.” He added and focused on his phone. The elevator stopped and they walked out side by side, being greeted by some of the maids that walked past them. Kaitlyn was so busy admiring the luxurious house that she didn't notice that they were already standing before Gray's mother.
The beautiful middle aged woman, Mrs Rose Robinson, stood in the middle of the living room with a warm and welcoming smile on her face. Her elegant stature and classy appearance were the first things that Kaitlyn noticed. She stared down at her feet, feeling inferior.
“Hi mom.” Gray kissed her cheek lightly before clearing his throat.
“Gray, welcome home.” Mrs Rose answered and stared at Kaitlyn. “And who is she?”
Kaitlyn immediately raised her head, taking a deep breath. “Good day Mrs Robinson, my name is Kaitlyn Brooks.” She answered sharply, a smile plastered on her face.
“Hi Kaitlyn.” Mrs Robinson was pleased already.
“Mom, she is my fiance.” Gray announced and his mother gasped, beaming with joy.
“Fiance? Wow! I'm so glad that you've decided to do the right thing!” She pushed Gray aside and rushed to hug Kaitlyn. “Welcome my dear, come sit with me.”
Kaitlyn sat with Mrs Rose and they had a long discussion while Gray just watched, pleased that his mother didn't have any objections. After a while, he disrupted their conversation by telling them that the registrar was waiting for them at the court. Apparently, he had decided on just a simple court wedding and it was taking place that very evening.
“But Gray, what's with the rush? We should plan a proper wedding. My son is getting married and the entire city needs to know!” Mrs Rose exclaimed, clinging to Kaitlyn's hand. Kaitlyn had instantly formed a connection with her, they both liked each other already.
“Mom, you forced me into searching for a wife, well I've found one and I would appreciate it if you let me do things my way.” Gray answered with furrowed eyebrows, trying his best to be polite. His mother frowned.
“But..”
“Kaitlyn, let's go.” He walked out and Kaitlyn quietly followed him, having no other choice. She didn't like the rush, but she was in for it if it was going to hasten her mother's surgery. She needed the money as soon as she could possibly get it.
They got to the registrar's office with a couple of guards and sat before the stout man to begin the proceedings. As the process of the wedding went on, Kaitlyn couldn't help but weep internally, thinking deeply about what she was getting herself into.
The only thing she knew about Gray was that he was a well-known business tycoon and a ruthless one at that. Except that, she knew nothing about him. How was she supposed to live with an arrogant man for a whole year?
“Miss, please sign here.” The registrar's voice snapped her out of her thoughts and she took the pen from him with shaky hands and signed her signature on the marriage certificate. Gray signed it too and they were immediately pronounced husband and wife.
“Take the documents to the mansion as soon as you finish here, I have something important to attend to immediately.” Gray got to his feet and left even before Kaitlyn could say anything. She sighed deeply after he left, the weight of her decision resting on her.
She finalized everything with the registrar and then left for the mansion in another car with the guards that Gray had assigned to her. They arrived at the mansion shortly after.
“Welcome Mrs Robinson.” The maids at the entrance bowed as soon as she walked in. Confused, she looked around to see if Gray's mother was behind her but she realized that they were talking to her. She was Mrs Robinson now.
“Kaitlyn is fine, please.” She said to them.
“Our boss will not spare us if we dare to call his wife by her first name, Mrs Robinson.” One of them answered.
She just sighed and walked past them, making her way to Gray's room to keep the documents. One of the maids directed her as she was unable to locate his room in such a complicated mansion.
As soon as she got there, she pushed the door open and let herself in. Gray's minty scent was everywhere, and she could not get enough of it. A smile crept up on her lips but she quickly shook it off, wondering why she was suddenly smiling at the thought of him.
Sighing, Kaitlyn walked over to the bed to drop the documents but something on the other side of the large bed caught her attention. Slowly, she walked over and picked it up, it was a picture frame.
“What?” Her eyes widened when she saw whose photo that was. Her hands became shaky, and her heart pounded heavily against her chest. Her stomach tied up into knots as she struggled to come to terms with what she was looking at.
“Why does Gray have my late father's photograph!?” She stepped back in shock.
