THE TRAP

1375 Words
The tires of Adrian’s black sports car screeched against the wet pavement as he sped through the rain-soaked streets. Isabella sat in the passenger seat, gripping her seat belt so tightly her knuckles had turned white. Ethan followed closely behind in his own car, refusing to let them face whatever awaited them alone. Neither of them spoke. The only sounds inside the car were the steady rhythm of the windshield wipers and the pounding of Isabella’s heart. Her father’s final words echoed in her mind. “I’m sorry… I should have told you everything five years ago.” She stared out the window. Please be safe, Dad. Adrian glanced at her. “We’ll find him.” “You don’t know that.” “I know your father loves you.” She looked at him. “You still believe he isn’t involved?” Adrian nodded without hesitation. “If he were guilty, he wouldn’t have called to warn you.” His words made sense. But then why had her father’s company vehicle been at the warehouse five years ago? Nothing seemed to fit together. ⸻ Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the quiet suburban neighborhood where Isabella’s father lived. Blue and red police lights flashed outside the house. An ambulance was already parked by the curb. Isabella’s stomach dropped. “No…” She jumped out of the car before it had fully stopped. “Dad!” A police officer stepped in front of her. “Ma’am, please stay back.” “My father lives here!” The officer’s expression softened. “You must be Miss Carter.” “Where is he?” “We don’t know.” Her heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean you don’t know?” “The house was empty when we arrived.” Adrian and Ethan joined her. The officer continued. “There are signs of a struggle.” “What kind of struggle?” Adrian asked. “Broken furniture.” “Blood.” “But not enough to suggest a fatal injury.” Isabella felt dizzy. Sophia, who had driven straight from the office after receiving Ethan’s message, arrived just in time to catch her before she fell. “It’s okay,” Sophia whispered. “We’ll find him.” ⸻ Inside the house, investigators carefully photographed every room. The living room was in complete disarray. A shattered coffee table lay on its side. Picture frames had been knocked off the walls. One lamp was broken. Isabella looked around in disbelief. This had always been the safest place she knew. Now it looked like a crime scene. A detective approached. “Miss Carter?” “Yes.” “We found this in your father’s study.” He handed her a small brown envelope. Written across the front in familiar handwriting were four words. For Isabella Only. Her hands trembled. She slowly opened the envelope. Inside was a folded letter. She unfolded it carefully. “My dearest Isabella,” “If you’re reading this, it means I no longer have the chance to explain everything in person.” Tears blurred her vision. “Five years ago, someone offered me a fortune to keep Adrian away from you. They threatened our family if I refused.” Isabella gasped. “I knew Adrian came to see me after the wedding because I had already been told what happened. Instead of listening to him, I believed the lies I had been fed.”* “I made the biggest mistake of my life.” “The car from my company wasn’t there because of me. One of my former employees stole it that morning. I reported it missing, but by then it was too late.” “Please forgive me.” “I only wanted to protect you.” “There is one person you must never trust…” The letter ended abruptly. The bottom half had been torn away. “No…” Isabella searched the envelope. Nothing else. The most important part was missing. Adrian gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “He was trying to tell you something.” She nodded through her tears. “But who?” ⸻ Across the city… Inside an abandoned factory, a man sat tied to a metal chair. His hands were bound behind his back. A single light bulb hung above him. It was Isabella’s father. His face was bruised, but his eyes remained determined. Footsteps echoed through the warehouse. Victoria Sinclair entered slowly, dressed in an elegant black suit. She smiled. “You always were stubborn.” He glared at her. “You’ll never get away with this.” “I already have.” “For five years.” She walked around him. “You should have stayed quiet.” “I couldn’t.” “My daughter deserves the truth.” Victoria laughed softly. “The truth?” “The truth destroys people.” “It destroyed Adrian.” “It destroyed Isabella.” “And now…” She leaned closer. “It will destroy you.” ⸻ Back at the house, Ethan continued searching the study. “There has to be something else.” He opened filing cabinets. Bookshelves. Desk drawers. Nothing. Just as he was about to give up, he noticed a loose floorboard beneath the desk. “Adrian.” “What?” “Help me.” Together they lifted the wooden board. Hidden beneath it was a small metal box. Inside were old photographs. Business contracts. And a notebook. Ethan flipped through the pages. Most contained financial records. Then he stopped. “I found something.” He pointed to an entry dated six years earlier. Meeting with V.S. regarding Kingsley project. Adrian frowned. “V.S.” “Victoria Sinclair.” Another page listed several large cash payments made to an unknown company. One payment stood out. Wedding Security – Paid in Full. Isabella looked confused. “My wedding security?” “We never hired private security.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Someone else did.” Ethan continued reading. The final page contained an address. No explanation. Just an address on the outskirts of the city. “What is it?” Isabella asked. “I don’t know.” “But I think we’re about to find out.” ⸻ Meanwhile, inside Victoria’s penthouse… Her assistant entered nervously. “They found the notebook.” Victoria closed her laptop. “So the old man kept records after all.” “What do we do?” Victoria walked toward a large painting hanging on the wall. Behind it was a hidden safe. She entered a code and removed another envelope. Inside was a photograph. It showed Adrian and Isabella embracing happily years before their wedding. She stared at it for a long moment. Then she calmly lit a match. The photograph burned to ashes. “They’re getting too close.” Her assistant swallowed. “Should we leave the country?” Victoria smiled. “No.” “It’s time to end this.” ⸻ Night had fallen by the time Adrian, Isabella, Ethan, and Sophia reached the address from the notebook. It led them to an old warehouse surrounded by rusted fences. The building looked abandoned. Sophia shivered. “I don’t like this.” Neither did Adrian. Something felt wrong. Too quiet. Too empty. He looked toward Ethan. “Stay close.” They stepped inside cautiously. Dust floated through the air. Rows of broken machinery stretched into the darkness. Suddenly— The heavy metal doors slammed shut behind them. CLANG! The sound echoed through the warehouse. Sophia jumped. “What was that?” Before anyone could answer, bright floodlights switched on all at once, blinding them. A slow clap echoed from somewhere above. They looked up. Standing on a steel walkway overlooking the warehouse was Victoria Sinclair. She smiled down at them. “I’ve been expecting you.” Isabella’s eyes widened in shock. “Victoria…” Victoria rested her hands on the railing. “I suppose it’s time we stopped pretending this was all a coincidence.” Adrian stepped protectively in front of Isabella. “What have you done with her father?” Victoria’s smile only grew wider. “Ask another question.” “This one…” “Will change all of your lives forever.
