Chapter 8: Trinity's POV - Small Revelations

746 Words
Two weeks later I'm starting to understand that Christopher Cruz is quietly, devastatingly thoughtful in ways that catch me off guard. Like how he always asks if I want to study together instead of just assuming I need help. Or how he's memorized that I hate the cafeteria food but love the little sandwiches from the deli downtown, so he brings me lunch without making a big deal about it. Today, I catch him doing something that makes my chest tight with emotion I don't know how to name. We're in the library after school, and I've been struggling with a calculus problem for twenty minutes. I'm about to give up when I notice Christopher solving the same problem in his notebook—not to show me the answer, but working it out step by step so he can explain it better when I ask for help. He doesn't know I'm watching. He thinks I'm still staring at my own paper in frustration. But I see the careful way he writes out each step, the patience he shows even when I'm not there to witness it. "Christopher?" He looks up, and I see him quickly close his notebook like he's been caught doing something wrong. "Were you... pre-solving my homework?" A flush creeps up his neck. "Maybe?" "Why?" He's quiet for a moment, and I can practically see him deciding whether to be honest. "Because you get this look on your face when you're frustrated. Like you want to disappear. And I thought if I could explain it better, maybe..." "Maybe I wouldn't look like I wanted to disappear." "Yeah." Something warm and terrifying unfolds in my chest. "That's really sweet." "It's really pathetic," Christopher mutters. "No." I reach across the table to touch his hand, surprising both of us. "It's really sweet. No one's ever paid that much attention to how I feel about anything." His eyes meet mine, and I see something there that makes my breath catch. It's not pity or obligation or even simple kindness. It's something deeper, something that looks suspiciously like... "Trinity," Christopher says quietly, "there's something I need to tell you." My heart starts racing. This is it. This is where he tells me this whole thing has been an elaborate setup, or that his parents are sending me away, or that— "I'm falling in love with you." The words hit me like cold water. Not because they're unwelcome, but because they're so much more than I ever dared to hope for. "You don't have to say anything back," Christopher continues quickly. "I know this situation is complicated, and I know you're still figuring things out. I just needed you to know that what I feel for you is real. It's not guilt or pity or some misplaced savior complex. I love your mind, your strength, your terrible sense of humor. I love the way you argue with me about social issues and the way you hum when you're concentrating. I love who you are, Trinity." I stare at him, my brain struggling to process what he's just said. Someone loves me. Not some idealized version of me, not who I might become, but who I am right now. "I don't understand," I whisper. "What don't you understand?" "How you can love someone like me." Christopher's expression shifts, becoming fierce and protective. "Trinity, there is nothing wrong with you. Nothing that needs to be fixed or improved or changed. You are exactly the kind of person someone should love." Tears sting my eyes, and I hate them. I hate that I still cry so easily, that compliments make me fall apart. "Hey," Christopher says gently. "Talk to me." "I want to believe you," I admit. "I want to love you back. I think I do love you back. But I'm scared." "Of what?" "Of not being enough. Of you realizing you can do better. Of ruining this by being too broken." Christopher stands up and comes around the table, kneeling beside my chair. "Trinity, look at me." I meet his eyes, seeing nothing but sincerity there. "You are enough. Exactly as you are, right now, you are enough. And I'm not going anywhere." When he kisses me this time, it tastes like promises and possibility. When I kiss him back, it feels like coming home to a place I never knew existed. "I love you too," I whisper against his lips. "I'm terrified, but I love you too."
