Act IV

1055 Words
Centuries had passed, yet the memory of the broken mirror and the dusty storeroom was as fresh as a recent dream. Ahaviel stood now at the heart of the celestial court, his figure a study in graceful stillness. The white robes he wore seemed to flow like liquid silver, sweeping over the polished marble floor and reflecting the awe on the faces of the Seraphim and Cherubim who watched him. His hair, a cascade of luminous white, was not hair at all, but living currents of water that shimmered with an inner light, constantly shifting and curling like waves upon a shore. A few strands fell across his eyes, which, when they caught the light, were not the eyes of an ordinary angel, but portals of swirling violet and midnight blue, galaxies spiraling within their depths. The court itself was a breathtaking spectacle, a grand amphitheater carved from the living stone of the heavens. Columns of bronze and gold, intricately carved, rose to support a domed ceiling that was not a ceiling at all, but a fragment of the cosmos itself. The star-dusted night sky swirled in a vortex of nebulae and galaxies, with golden shafts of light breaking through the clouds as if cast by an unseen divine source. Beside Ahaviel stood his guardians, angels with spears of pure light, their silent vigil a testament to his newfound status. Surrounding the court, heavenly beasts of unimaginable size and form waited with quiet anticipation. They had all come to witness Ahaviel's second trial. Before him sat the jury, a hundred angels of every rank, their faces a mix of judgment and curiosity. "Today, we are gathered to bear witness to the second trial of the nameless one," one of the judges announced, and a profound hush fell over the court. "Nameless one," another judge began, "as in the previous trial, you testified to your relationship with the Brightest. This is the last trial, and we have but one question to ask." "It is a question the Creator Himself wants answered," a third voice added, its tone echoing through the hallowed space. "Do you love the Brightest?" all three judges asked in unison. The question hung in the air, leaving the grand hall in a stunned silence. Ahaviel stood still, a subtle smirk playing on his lips, visible from every corner of the court. "Yes," he said, the word a choked whisper as tears began to stream down his cheeks, a path of shimmering light on his flawless skin. The heavenly beasts surrounding the court roared in a sudden, violent uproar, their cries shaking the very foundations of the sanctuary. But as Ahaviel met their enraged gazes, a profound quiet settled over them, a deep calm that left them still as statues. "He was the pillar of my world," Ahaviel continued, his voice hoarse with emotion, his eyes glistening with the truth of his words. From the celestial heights above the court, a newborn beast plummeted, a phoenix wrapped in the last fading embers of its birth. With a swift and silent grace, Ahaviel ascended, his luminous hair of swirling water catching the celestial winds. The instant he cradled the tiny creature in his arms, a circlet of ethereal violet light, wrought in a crown of sharp, interlocking stars, appeared above his head, pulsing with a gentle, protective energy. A pair of immense, feathery white wings, pristine and immaculate, unfurled from his back, holding him suspended in the air. "You came near to slaying a new-born," Ahaviel said, his voice a low, chilling whisper directed at the assembly below. His gaze then fell upon the fledgling phoenix in his arms. "What purpose has a babe to be here?" he questioned, though the creature could not answer, the violet circlet above his brow pulsing once more with his query. "A Seraphim is he?!" a cry went up from the jury, a collective gasp that swelled into a furious roar the moment they beheld Ahaviel, who remained aloft with his great wings spread in silent, defiant majesty. Ahaviel sighed, his tears dropped no more to the floor, he cradled the newborn to his chest. "My name is Ahaviel," he declared, his wings, now larger than his very frame, shadowing the court. "I am the owner of the abyssal plains, and should I fall, my companions shall fall with me." A judge, his voice tinged with a peculiar kind of bitterness, spoke the name as if tasting something forbidden and sweet. "Ahaviel... Ye who feels love..." Another judge, his tone almost mournful, delivered the final sentence. "You are sentenced to an eternity in Pandemonium, stripped of your wings, your halo, and your name." The moment the words were uttered, a silent decay began. The feathers of Ahaviel's magnificent wings withered, leaving behind bleeding wounds where their roots had once been, as though a blight had struck him. Surrounded by the glimmering, crystal-purple butterflies that were his only companions now, he began to sing, his voice a sorrowful hymn that echoed through the vast court. I was carved from fire, crowned in dawn, Wings of light, but the light is gone. I hear the heavens call my name, But silence answers just the same. ~Falling, falling, through endless skies, Stars turn cold in my fading eyes. Carry me, O gentle night, Hold my soul till I lose the light. ~Every vow I could not keep, Scatters like ash in the deep. I was a hymn, now I am flame, Burning with sorrow, bound with shame. ~Falling, falling, through endless skies, Stars turn cold in my fading eyes. Carry me, O gentle night, Hold my soul till I lose the light. If I weep, will the heavens hear? If I pray, will they draw me near? Or must I wander, torn apart, An exile born from a broken heart? (soft) Falling, falling, into the sea, Heaven closes its doors to me. Sing my name in the darkened sky, An angel fallen, but still I fly. As the last note faded, his body turned to dust, a painful, slow disintegration. From the swirling motes of his being, a swirling vortex of purple light erupted, a maelstrom of shadow and light. It pulled every beast and angel around the court into its depths, a final, beautiful act of defiance before it, too, vanished.
