Chapter Nineteen ;- Between Crown and Heart

--- (Idris POV) Home. The word had begun to feel heavier than the mountains surrounding Alpha Training College. In a few days, I would leave these stone halls behind. Return not as a student,But as Silver Claw’s Alpha. And for the first time in two years,i did not feel victorious,i felt divided. --- The last trial was not physical. It was political. We stood before a panel of senior Alphas and Council Observers. Strategy maps covered the stone walls simulated attacks, rogue incursions, famine responses, internal rebellion scenarios. Across the room stood Kaden of Iron Fang. Even in stillness, he radiated challenge. Alpha Kaden though still technically “in training” had been the strongest among us since the first year. Ruthless in sparring. Brilliant in tactics. Arrogant enough to admit it openly. “Your territory is under coordinated rogue assault,” the examiner said. “Three fronts. Limited warriors. Your Luna candidate is politically controversial. What do you secure first?” Murmurs filled the hall. Kaden answered first. “Eliminate the strongest external threat. Crush them publicly. Fear stabilizes dissent.” Direct. Efficient. Then it was my turn. “Stabilize the internal structure,” I replied calmly. “If the pack fractures, no external victory matters. Secure loyalty first. Then retaliate.” Kaden’s jaw tightened slightly, different philosophies, same goal. The exam lasted six hours. When results were announced, Kaden ranked first in combat and strategic aggression. I ranked highest in crisis governance and pack stabilization. We did not congratulate one another,we simply nodded. Respect without friendship, rivalry without hatred. The Iron Fang Alpha would rule through strength. I would rule through structure, and yet even during the examination her face flickered in my thoughts. Would she stand steady in crisis? Why did that question matter so much? --- Our final combat session was tradition. No instructors intervened unless death was imminent. Kaden and I were paired.Of course we were, the arena pulsed with anticipation. He attacked first relentless, powerful, precise. Every movement calculated to break defenses. “You hesitate,” he muttered during a locked hold. “I assess,” I replied. He smirked. “Overthinking gets Alphas killed.” “And recklessness gets packs destroyed.” The clash intensified, sand rose, blood followed. In the end, neither of us fully dominated, the instructors called it balanced. Kaden stepped back, breathing hard. “You’ll be a dangerous Alpha,” he said flatly.“So will you.” And that was the closest thing to praise either of us would offer. --- Rihab trained with us out of duty. Son of Elder Rafiq. Future Gamma of Silver Claw.Older by three years. Observant. Disciplined. Loyal to structure. But not our friend. We sparred together. Strategized together. Ate at the same long tables. Yet there was always distance.,he respected hierarchy too much to pry,and I respected boundaries too much to offer. When Saadun and I trained alone, we spoke freely. When Rihab joined us, conversation shifted to formation efficiency and patrol rotations,he did not know. About Leyla. About the unrest in my thoughts. And I preferred it that way. Some weaknesses were not meant for the Gamma to see. --- It was during weapons maintenance when Rihab had been summoned elsewhere that Saadun finally leaned back and sighed. “You’re worse now.” “I’m focused.” “You’re conflicted.” I didn’t deny it. “My heart chooses someone,” I said quietly. Saadun stilled. “But the council chooses Salma.” “And the Moon?” he asked carefully. I exhaled. “The Moon has chosen nothing.” No mate bond had snapped into place. No pull had claimed me. My fated mate remained unfound. Somewhere. Or nowhere. “And if your heart is wrong?” Saadun pressed. “Then I bury it.” He studied me. “And if it’s not?” Silence stretched. Indra stirred inside my mind restless, thoughtful. She is not random, my wolf murmured quietly. I clenched my jaw. “This is not about desire,” I said firmly. “It’s about stability.” Saadun shook his head slightly. “An unstable Alpha ignores his own instincts.” --- That night, I stood alone beneath the college cliffs,Indra surfaced more clearly than he had in months. You prepare to return, he observed. “Yes.” And yet you are not whole. I exhaled sharply. “My mate has not appeared.” Not yet. “And Salma is the logical choice.” Indra’s presence bristled. Logical is not sacred. I closed my eyes. “Leyla is a survivor. Nothing more.” Silence. Then...You do not think of her as nothing.I inhaled slowly. No mate bond. No scent. No confirmation. And yet Her steadiness lingered in me. When you stand before the pack, Indra murmured, you must be certain. Certain I had never feared battle. But uncertainty? That unsettled me more than any enemy. --- the last day arrived,Trunks packed, dormitories emptied. Wolves departing in different directions. Kaden left without ceremony Iron Fang banners waiting beyond the gates,he did not look back,Saadun stood beside me. Rihab adjusted his cloak, ever composed. “Silver Claw awaits,” Rihab said formally. “Yes,” I replied. But my thoughts were not on ceremony, they were on expectation, the council would expect me to stand beside Salma. The pack would expect unity. Tradition would expect obedience. My heart…It whispered a quieter name. Leyla. And somewhere in the unseen spaces between fate and choice..My unfound mate remained a question the Moon had not answered. As we stepped beyond the gates of Alpha Training College for the final time, one truth settled into my bones: I was ready to lead.Ready to protect.Ready to fight. But I was not ready... To choose between crown and heart. And I did not know that soon I would not have the luxury of delay. 🌙
