Chapter Seven: The Truth Behind the Silence
Amara Ellis had always believed that silence was peaceful.
But standing inside Adrian Vale’s private office, surrounded by walls of glass that overlooked the city, she realized that some silences carried more weight than words.
Adrian had left her with a question that refused to disappear.
"What if everything you know about me is a lie?"
For the past few days, Amara had tried to ignore the strange feeling growing inside her. She told herself that Adrian was just another powerful businessman with complicated secrets. It was normal for billionaires to have hidden deals, enemies, and mysteries.
But this felt different.
This felt personal.
She stared at the document in her hands. It was an old company report she had found while organizing files for Vale Corporation. Most employees would have ignored it, but something about the name on the report caught her attention.
Ethan Vale.
Adrian’s father.
The same man everyone believed had built the empire from nothing.
Yet the report suggested something else.
There were missing years. Unexplained financial transfers. A company acquisition that happened under suspicious circumstances.
And Adrian’s name was connected to all of it.
"Looking into things that don't concern you can be dangerous."
The voice behind her made her freeze.
She turned slowly.
Adrian stood at the doorway, his expression unreadable.
"I wasn't trying to invade your privacy," Amara said quickly. "I found this while working."
He walked toward her, his eyes fixed on the document.
"That file should not exist anymore."
The seriousness in his voice sent a chill through her.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian took the document from her hands and placed it on the table.
"It means someone wants the past to stay buried."
Amara studied his face. For the first time since she met him, she saw something beyond confidence and control.
Fear.
"You’re afraid," she whispered.
Adrian looked away.
"I don't get afraid."
"Everyone gets afraid."
His eyes returned to hers.
"Not everyone survives what I'm afraid of."
The words silenced her.
Before she could ask another question, Adrian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen and his expression changed instantly.
"Who is it?" Amara asked.
He didn't answer.
The name on the screen was enough.
Victor Black.
Adrian answered.
"What do you want?"
A deep voice responded from the other end.
"You still haven't told her the truth."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"This has nothing to do with her."
A cold laugh came through the phone.
"Everything has to do with her now."
Amara watched as Adrian's face darkened.
"What are you talking about?" she asked after he ended the call.
Adrian remained silent.
Then he said something that made her heart stop.
"You weren't hired because you were the best candidate."
Her eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"You were hired because someone wanted you close to me."
Amara felt the room spin slightly.
"Are you saying I was used?"
"No."
"Then what are you saying?"
Adrian stepped closer.
"I'm saying someone knew you before I did."
The words made no sense.
"I've never met you before that interview."
"Are you sure?"
Amara frowned.
"Of course I'm sure."
Adrian looked at her with a painful expression.
"Your mother worked for my family twenty years ago."
The air left her lungs.
"My mother?"
"She knew something about my father's empire."
Amara shook her head.
"My mother never mentioned the Vale family."
"Maybe because she was trying to protect you."
"Protect me from what?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Then he said quietly:
"From the same people who destroyed my family."
A sudden knock interrupted them.
Adrian immediately stepped in front of Amara.
The door opened.
His assistant, Daniel, entered with a worried expression.
"Mr. Vale, we have a problem."
Adrian turned.
"What happened?"
Daniel hesitated.
"The security footage from last night was hacked."
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
"What footage?"
"The footage from outside your office."
Amara felt her heartbeat increase.
"Someone was watching us?"
Daniel nodded.
"And they left a message."
Adrian looked at him.
"What message?"
Daniel handed him a small envelope.
Adrian opened it slowly.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Amara.
Taken years ago.
On the back were four words written in black ink.
"She knows the truth."
Amara stared at the picture, confused and terrified.
"I don't understand."
Adrian looked at her.
But this time, he wasn't hiding anything.
"Neither do I."
For the first time, Adrian Vale—the man who controlled everything—looked completely powerless.
Because someone from his past had returned.
And they had chosen Amara as their weapon.
