The Woman Behind The Secret

Chapter Three The Woman Behind the Secret Amara Ellis had always believed that people revealed who they truly were through their actions, not their words. Adrian Vale was proving that belief correct. For two weeks, she had worked beside him, and every day brought a new surprise. The man everyone described as heartless was not exactly the monster the world believed him to be. He was demanding. Impossible to impress. Sometimes frustrating. But he was also fair. He noticed when employees worked overtime. He remembered small details about important meetings. He quietly helped people without expecting recognition. The problem was that every good thing about him seemed to come with a hidden shadow. And Amara hated secrets. Especially secrets involving her. --- "Ms. Ellis." Amara looked up from her desk. Adrian stood near his office door. "Yes?" "I need you to accompany me to a meeting tonight." She checked the schedule on her tablet. "Tonight? That wasn't on your calendar." "I know." She raised an eyebrow. "Then why wasn't it added?" "Because I decided it today." Amara stared at him. "You expect me to adjust your schedule when you don't even tell me about changes?" A few employees nearby immediately became quiet. Nobody spoke to Adrian Vale like that. Adrian looked at her calmly. "Are you questioning my decisions?" "No." A pause. "I'm questioning your organization." The silence that followed was intense. Amara immediately realized she might have crossed a line. But she refused to apologize for doing her job. For a moment, Adrian simply stared at her. Then something unexpected happened. He nodded. "Fair point." The employees looked shocked. Adrian Vale had accepted criticism. From an assistant. "Prepare the documents. We leave at seven." Amara nodded. "Understood." As he walked away, Sophia approached her. "Are you trying to get fired?" Amara looked at her. "What?" "You just challenged Adrian Vale." "I was doing my job." Sophia laughed softly. "That's exactly why you're still here." --- That evening, Amara sat in the back of Adrian's car as they drove across the city. The silence between them was unusual. Normally, Adrian used every moment to work. Emails. Calls. Documents. Tonight, he simply stared out the window. Amara noticed the tired expression on his face. "You look exhausted." The words escaped before she could stop them. Adrian turned toward her. "Is that concern?" "No." She looked away. "It's an observation." A faint smile appeared on his lips. "You're terrible at pretending." "And you're terrible at admitting you're human." The moment the words left her mouth, she realized what she had said. Adrian looked at her. Not angry. Just surprised. Most people were afraid to speak honestly around him. Amara wasn't. "Be careful, Amara." It was the first time he called her by her name. She noticed. "With what?" "Thinking you understand me." His voice became quieter. "People who try usually regret it." Before she could answer, the car stopped. --- The meeting was held at a private luxury hotel. Important businessmen filled the room. Amara stayed beside Adrian, taking notes and handling documents. Everything went smoothly until a woman entered. She was elegant. Beautiful. Confident. And everyone immediately noticed her. The woman's eyes landed on Adrian. For the first time since Amara met him... Adrian looked different. Not cold. Not emotionless. Uncomfortable. "Adrian." The woman smiled. "I didn't expect to see you here." Adrian's expression hardened. "Victoria." Amara immediately noticed the tension. The woman looked at her. "And who is this?" "My assistant." Victoria smiled. But there was something sharp behind it. "Interesting." Amara didn't like the way she said that. "Adrian Vale doesn't usually keep assistants for long." Adrian's voice became cold. "Victoria." The warning in his tone was clear. But Victoria ignored it. She stepped closer. "I was just surprised." Her eyes moved back to Amara. "Some people are good at finding their way into places they don't belong." Amara felt the insult. Before she could respond, Adrian spoke. "Enough." The entire room went silent. Victoria looked at him. "You still protect strangers." Adrian's jaw tightened. "Leave." For a moment, something passed between them. Pain. Anger. History. Then Victoria walked away. --- On the drive back, Amara couldn't stop thinking about what happened. "Who is she?" Adrian didn't answer. "Victoria." Silence. "She knows you well." Still silence. Amara sighed. "You know, one day your silence is going to annoy the wrong person." Adrian looked at her. "And you think you're that person?" "I think I'm already becoming that person." For a moment, they looked at each other. Something changed. Something neither of them wanted to acknowledge. The tension between them wasn't just curiosity anymore. It was something else. Something dangerous. Adrian looked away first. "You should stay away from my past." Amara frowned. "Why?" "Because my past destroys everything it touches." His words were serious. Almost like a warning. But before Amara could reply, her phone vibrated. She looked down. A new message. Another unknown number. This time, there was a picture attached. Her eyes widened. It was a picture of Adrian. And beside him... Was her. Taken earlier that day. A message appeared below it. "I warned you once. Leave Adrian Vale before you become his next victim." Amara's heartbeat increased. Someone was watching her. Someone close enough to know where she was. And for the first time... She wondered if working for Adrian Vale had been the biggest mistake of her life.
