The Truth She Hid

Chapter Five The Truth She Hid Adrian Vale did not sleep that night. For the first time in years, he found himself questioning his own judgment. He had built an empire by trusting his instincts. Every decision. Every investment. Every person he allowed into his circle. He had survived because he knew when something felt wrong. And now, something felt wrong about Amara Ellis. The woman who challenged him. The woman who refused to fear him. The woman who somehow made him forget, even for a moment, that he was supposed to keep everyone at a distance. He looked at the document on his desk. A copy of Amara's employment records. Nothing unusual. No criminal history. No hidden identity. No connection to his family. But the message from the unknown caller kept repeating in his mind. "Ask Amara Ellis why she never told you about her connection to your family." Adrian hated uncertainty. And Amara had become the biggest uncertainty in his life. --- The next morning, Amara immediately noticed something was different. Adrian was colder. Not his usual professional coldness. Something deeper. He barely looked at her when she entered his office. "Good morning." No response. She placed the documents on his desk. "The reports you requested." He picked them up. "Thank you." That was it. Short. Distant. Amara frowned. "What happened?" "Nothing." She almost smiled. "That's a terrible lie." His eyes lifted. "You think you know me well enough to call me a liar?" The sharpness in his voice surprised her. She stepped back slightly. "No." A pause. "But I know when someone is avoiding a conversation." Adrian looked away. "You should focus on your work." There it was. The wall. The one he always built whenever something became too personal. Amara left his office, but the feeling stayed with her. Something had changed. And she knew it involved her. --- Hours later, Adrian finally made a decision. He needed answers. Not from rumors. Not from enemies. From Amara herself. He found her in the archive room organizing old company files. "Amara." She turned. "Yes?" "How much do you know about my family?" The question caught her completely off guard. "What?" "My family." The room became silent. Amara slowly placed the file in her hand on the table. "Why are you asking me that?" "Answer the question." His tone was calm. Too calm. Amara knew that tone. It meant he was angry. "I don't know much." "That's not true." Her heart skipped. "Why would you think that?" "Because someone told me you have a connection to my family." The color disappeared from her face. And Adrian noticed. That reaction was enough. "Who told you?" "That doesn't matter." "It does." "Why?" Because she suddenly looked afraid. Not guilty. Afraid. And that confused him. "Amara." His voice softened slightly. "Tell me the truth." She looked away. For several seconds, she said nothing. Then she whispered: "My father worked for your father." Adrian became still. "What?" "My father was an accountant at Vale Industries." The past. The same past that destroyed his family. "Why didn't you tell me?" Amara swallowed. "Because I knew you would react like this." "Like what?" "Like I'm responsible for something I didn't do." His expression changed. "I didn't say that." "You didn't have to." Her voice became emotional. "I know what people think about my family." Adrian stared at her. "Explain." Amara took a breath. "My father was accused of stealing money from your father's company." Silence. Adrian remembered. The scandal. The missing funds. The betrayal. The reason his family empire nearly collapsed. "But he didn't do it." Her voice was firm. "My father spent years trying to prove his innocence." Adrian watched her carefully. "Why should I believe you?" The moment the words left his mouth, he saw the hurt in her eyes. Not anger. Hurt. And somehow, that bothered him more. "You're right." She nodded slowly. "You shouldn't." She picked up her files. "Because trusting people has never been your strength." Then she walked away. --- That night, Adrian sat alone in his office. For years, he believed he knew the truth. His father was betrayed. Someone stole from his company. Someone destroyed his family. But now there was another possibility. What if he had been wrong? He opened an old file from his father's case. The documents were incomplete. Some pages were missing. Someone had hidden evidence. Someone had wanted the truth buried. His phone rang. It was his security team. "Mr. Vale." "What did you find?" A pause. Then: "We traced the anonymous messages." Adrian stood. "And?" "The number belongs to someone who worked for your father." His expression hardened. "Who?" The answer made his blood run cold. "Your father's former financial director." Adrian's eyes narrowed. A man who disappeared fifteen years ago. A man everyone believed was dead. A man who knew every secret inside Vale Industries. And if he was alive... Then the truth about his family's downfall was still out there. Adrian looked toward the empty office doorway. Amara had not been his enemy. She might have been another victim. But he had already hurt her by doubting her. For the first time in years... Adrian Vale realized he might have pushed away the one person who could help him uncover the truth.
