Chapter Six
The Deal Between Us
Amara Ellis spent the entire night convincing herself that she didn't care.
She told herself that Adrian Vale's opinion didn't matter.
She told herself that she was used to people judging her because of things she couldn't control.
She had survived betrayal before.
She could survive this too.
But every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the way Adrian looked at her.
The doubt.
The suspicion.
The disappointment.
And somehow, that hurt more than she expected.
Because despite everything, she had started believing he was different.
---
The next morning, Amara arrived at Vale Corporation with a decision already made.
She was going to resign.
She couldn't continue working somewhere she wasn't trusted.
She walked toward Adrian's office, holding her resignation letter.
Before she could knock, the door opened.
Adrian stood there.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
His expression was different.
Less cold.
More tired.
"Come in."
Amara entered slowly.
Adrian noticed the envelope in her hand.
"What is that?"
She placed it on his desk.
"My resignation."
His eyes moved to the envelope.
Then back to her.
"No."
The simple answer surprised her.
"Excuse me?"
"I said no."
"You can't reject my resignation."
"I can."
"That's not how this works."
Adrian walked around the desk.
"Amara."
It was the first time he said her name in a while.
The seriousness in his voice made her pause.
"I owe you an apology."
She didn't expect that.
Adrian Vale apologizing?
Impossible.
"I judged you before knowing the truth."
Amara remained silent.
"I was wrong."
The words were difficult for him to say.
She could tell.
And somehow, that made them more meaningful.
"But you still don't trust me."
Adrian looked at her.
"I trust actions more than words."
"And what have my actions shown?"
"That you are not like the people who hurt me."
The answer caught her off guard.
For a moment, she didn't know what to say.
---
Adrian walked back to his desk and picked up a file.
"I found something."
He opened it.
"The person who sent those messages is connected to my father's old company."
Amara looked at the documents.
"Connected how?"
"He worked with my father before the scandal."
Her expression changed.
"The same scandal involving my father?"
Adrian nodded.
"I think someone wanted us to believe the wrong story."
Amara stared at the file.
After years of defending her father, she finally saw a possibility.
Someone else knew the truth.
Someone who could clear his name.
"Why are you telling me this?"
Adrian looked directly at her.
"Because I need your help."
The words shocked her.
The powerful Adrian Vale was asking her for help.
"You don't need anyone."
"I was wrong about that."
A pause.
"Everyone needs someone eventually."
For the first time, Amara saw the man behind the billionaire.
Not the CEO.
Not the person everyone feared.
Just Adrian.
A man who had been carrying pain alone for years.
---
"What's the plan?"
Adrian seemed surprised.
"You're helping?"
Amara crossed her arms.
"I want the truth too."
A small silence passed.
Then Adrian nodded.
"There's one condition."
"What?"
"You follow my instructions."
She almost smiled.
"Still giving orders?"
"It's a habit."
"Maybe you should work on that."
A faint expression appeared on his face.
Almost a smile.
Almost.
"Deal?"
Amara looked at his extended hand.
She hesitated.
Then shook it.
"Deal."
Neither of them realized that simple agreement would change everything.
---
That afternoon, Adrian and Amara began investigating the old company records.
They worked side by side.
For the first time, they weren't boss and employee.
They were partners.
And Amara noticed something.
Adrian was different when he wasn't pretending to be untouchable.
He laughed quietly at certain memories.
He became protective when discussing his employees.
He cared more than he admitted.
"You're staring."
Amara quickly looked away.
"I wasn't."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"You were."
She looked embarrassed.
"I was just thinking."
"About?"
She hesitated.
"That you're not what people say you are."
The room became quiet.
Adrian looked at her.
"And what do people say?"
"That you're heartless."
His expression changed slightly.
"And you disagree?"
Amara looked at him.
"I think you're someone who became cold because being soft hurt too much."
For a moment, Adrian had no response.
Because she was right.
And he hated that she could see him so clearly.
---
Later that evening, they discovered something important.
A hidden transaction record.
A payment made shortly before the scandal.
The receiver's name had been erased.
But the date was clear.
The payment happened three days before Adrian's father was accused.
"This changes everything," Amara whispered.
Adrian stared at the document.
"Someone planned this."
"Yes."
"And they are still protecting the truth."
Amara looked at him.
"Whoever did this knows you are searching."
Adrian nodded.
"Which means you're in danger too."
Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
The entire office went dark.
Amara froze.
"Adrian?"
No answer.
Then she heard movement.
Someone was inside.
A shadow moved across the room.
Adrian immediately stepped in front of her.
"Stay behind me."
The sound of glass breaking echoed through the office.
Someone had entered.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
And whoever it was...
Had come for the evidence.
