Chapter 2

Thinking about her current life, Emily finally let a faint smile. Nora looked at her with pity and urged, "Emmy, you're still adjusting to the jet lag. Go upstairs and rest first. See you at dinner." No sooner had she lain down than the bedroom door was roughly forced open. The intruder was an unfamiliar young girl. She looked at Emily and put on an awkward, apologetic expression. "Miss Johnson, I didn't know you were staying here. I'm Mrs. Carter's assistant. You can call me Chloe." She waved her hand, and several men walked in carrying large bags and packages. Emily felt confused. In the split second, she stood there frozen, a cold smirk tugged at Chloe's mouth. Then she spoke, smug and proud, "All these were bought by Mr. Carter for Mrs. Carter. "He specifically called the brand and said that from now on, every new seasonal collection should be sent to Mrs. Carter first. Bags, clothes, jewelry... There's no more space left in Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter's room. "So Mr. Carter ordered me to move everything into this room. "Miss Johnson, let me arrange a new room for you, shall I?" Emily nodded. After all, she wouldn't be staying here for long, so it didn't matter which room she stayed in. Chloe had Emily's belongings moved next to the maid's room on the first floor. Though this room was technically a guest room, no one had ever stayed there—it was damp and noisy. Upstairs, things were still being banged around as they unpacked. Every room on the entire second floor had been filled with Sophie's clothes and jewelry. Emily lay on the bed with her eyes closed, too disturbed by the noise to fall asleep. She heard Liam come back from outside and ask Chloe, who was still organizing things, "Where is Emily staying now?" "Miss Johnson is in the guest room on the first floor." After that, the conversation fell silent. Emily gave a self-deprecating laugh. Who would have thought that the care she never received when they were married would actually come to her now? In Emily's memory, Liam is a complete workaholic. Every part of his life was tied to his work. On their wedding night, he was in his study handling work documents. When he went with her to visit her parents' graves, he was sitting in a cross-border meeting. Even during their private time together at night, he was always ready to answer a call and leave at a moment's notice. Once, on their wedding anniversary, Emily made a whole spread all by herself. Over dinner, she told him she hoped Liam would pay more attention to her and, at the very least, say good morning to her every day. But before she could even finish speaking, Liam's phone rang again. He stood up to leave, and when he reached the door, he didn't forget to turn back and tell her not to waste time on such meaningless trivialities. Her heart slowly froze over, numbed by his constant indifference and failure to understand her. She had been conscientious, taking perfect care of all of Liam's daily needs, looking after his parents, and maintaining his business connections for him. In the end, even a single good morning was nothing but a wild dream for her. At first, Emily could still convince herself that he just didn't know how to care for other people. It wasn't until Sophie Miller appeared that she realized his principles could actually be broken. When Sophie went to film while sick, he actually dropped all his work and rushed to the set to take her away. Worried that her sudden departure would offend her director and colleagues, Liam waved it off, compensated for all their losses on the spot, and even gave everyone a generous bonus. Coincidentally, that very day Nora suffered a sudden heart attack and needed surgery. Emily couldn't handle everything alone, so she called Liam. He said impatiently, "I'm working right now. Stop bothering me!" Then he hung up the phone directly. Emily had to grit her teeth and handle everything on her own. She went alone to pay the medical bills, found the doctor to schedule the surgery, calmed Nora's nerves, and after the operation, she stayed by Nora's side, caring for her day and night without rest. After Nora was discharged from the hospital, Emily collapsed. During her hospital stay, she received a call from Liam for the first time. "Come help me deliver an urgent document to the company right now. I'm too busy to get away." Emily didn't dare delay for a single moment. She pulled out her IV, grabbed the document, and rushed straight to the company. But there, she saw a scene she could never forget. To Emily's surprise, Liam wasn't working in the office. Instead, he was staring intently at Sophie, listening to her giddily gesticulate as she recounted her trip to Iceland. There was a soft, warm smile on his face. In that moment, Emily felt like she was being slowly cut to pieces by a dull knife—it was less a sharp pain, more a lingering, agonizing torment. Liam had never talked to her that way. When Sophie saw Emily standing in the doorway, the laughter in the room cut off abruptly. Sophie said a quick greeting and left, and Liam immediately wiped the smile from his face and turned his attention to the documents on his desk. Emily asked, feigning indifference, "I thought you were very busy?" Liam furrowed his brow slightly, his voice laced with weariness, "Listening to her new ideas for the ad campaign. I guess this is work." Yet when Emily discussed work with Liam, all she ever got from him was a single, dismissive "Mm-hmm." "Miss Johnson! The engagement party is about to start. Mrs. Carter sent me to get you." The maid's words pulled Emily out of her reverie. She touched up her makeup slightly, changed into a soft pink dress, and carried a soft, quiet grace. Liam was sitting on the sofa, and when he saw Emily enter the living room dressed like this, his eyes flickered almost involuntarily. When his gaze met Emily's searching look, he hurriedly averted his eyes. "Emily, you'd better behave yourself at tonight's party. Stop clinging to your delusional fantasies!"
