“Enzo, good evening, hijo,” Janet greeted me from the foyer, her smile soft but her eyes full of grief. “Good evening, Auntie,” I said, bowing my head a little out of respect. “I’m sorry about your mother. Her passing was so sudden,” she said, her hand settling on my shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze. I nodded. Janet had always treated me like her own son, even before she and my father had kids of their own. She still did, even now that she had two children with him. Because of that, I’d always given her the respect she deserved. “I’m glad you came to dinner,” she added, dropping her hand. “I wouldn’t have said no to Dad,” I replied. We walked inside.
