A Cooperation Offer

"I love you..." That sentence kept lingering in Ivana’s mind. Her heart always trembled whenever she heard Arsen’s words of love directed at her. "Huft!" She let out a frustrated sigh. "What are you expecting, Ivana? Wake up. Don’t be weak and careless just because of his sweet words. He’s only trying to win your heart back," she told herself. "I can’t let myself be swayed," she muttered. "Ivana!" A voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked up and saw Freddy approaching with Alex, which clearly shocked her. "W-what does this mean, Uncle? Why did you bring him?" Ivana asked, looking confused. "I told you, we would meet again and interact more frequently," Alex said with his signature charming smile. "Regarding the proposal I gave you yesterday, the project is under Alex’s responsibility," Freddy stated, surprising Ivana. "What?" Freddy and Alex both took seats across from Ivana. "I apologize for not telling you earlier, but you would have rejected it immediately if you knew Alex was involved, considering your past," Freddy explained. "Ivana, I know our past relationship didn’t end well. So, can we now mend things by working together in business, as partners?" Alex asked. "Please don’t cancel this collaboration. I might be able to help you." Ivana remained silent for a moment. "Uncle, I have read and understood the proposal from yesterday. There are some things I’d like to ask about," Ivana said, making both Freddy and Alex smile, relieved that she was willing to proceed with the collaboration. Ivana, Freddy, and Alex then engaged in an enthusiastic discussion about the project they proposed. They were talking about a vast piece of land near a mountainous tourist area, which had become a favorite destination for travelers seeking relaxation while enjoying nature’s beauty. Freddy and Alex saw great potential in the land and planned to build small villas that could be rented out to tourists. "Just imagine, Ivana. The villas will be surrounded by breathtaking scenery and fresh air, making it the perfect place for guests to stay longer. Clearly, this project will not be a loss for you." With her expertise in project management, Ivana carefully considered all the points Freddy laid out. Alex also shared various ideas about unique villa designs and concepts. They discussed how to fairly divide the project’s profits so that everyone would be satisfied and motivated. Alex suggested a fair percentage split, while Freddy added that they should also consider operational and maintenance costs for the villas. Ivana had already given this a lot of thought. She knew she had to analyze every aspect before making a decision. Moreover, Freddy confidently requested additional funding for construction, aside from the land provisions that had been discussed earlier. He suggested treating the land as a leased property, where after the business was up and running, they would pay taxes and rent for it. It sounded like a smart solution, but in Ivana’s mind, it seemed like a way for Freddy to gain a slight advantage while putting her at a disadvantage. Even though Freddy continued explaining the potential profits, Ivana couldn't shake off a feeling of unease about the offer. Freddy’s presentation was indeed appealing, showcasing incredible opportunities, but Ivana’s instincts told her otherwise. She felt the need to be extra cautious because sometimes, things that seemed attractive on the surface could hide significant risks beneath. So, she carefully reflected on all these points, hoping to find the best path forward—one that would not only benefit Freddy but also herself. "Uncle, I understand everything now. However, I need time to discuss this with my father. After all, he is the one who has the final say on all of this," Ivana stated. "Alright, do as you wish, Ivana. I can wait," Freddy said with a warm smile. "Ah, I have an incoming call. Excuse me for a moment." Freddy left, leaving Ivana and Alex alone in an awkward atmosphere, which made Ivana uncomfortable. "I’m always amazed and impressed whenever you explain your business perspectives. You’re very thorough and meticulous, Ivana," Alex complimented her. "I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do, Alex," Ivana replied. "Yes, and you always look stunning while doing it," Alex said, earning a small smile from Ivana. "Ivana, how is your marriage with Arsen? Do you have any children?" Alex suddenly asked. "Our marriage? Yes, so far, everything is fine," Ivana answered, not intending to reveal the truth. Alex gazed at Ivana intensely, making her feel both confused and uneasy. "Are you happy, Ivana?" Alex asked, leaving Ivana speechless. "Does that even matter now?" she countered. "Why would you answer like that? As if everything you’re going through is against your will. The Ivana I know is a strong woman who never allows herself to be trampled on or belittled. A proud woman who always acts wisely. So, why are you saying things that don’t reflect who you truly are, Ivana?" Alex questioned, leaving Ivana unable to respond. Just then, Freddy returned, putting his phone back into his pocket. "It seems like you two were having a deep conversation. Am I interrupting?" Freddy asked with a chuckle. "Not at all, Uncle. We were just reminiscing about the past," Alex replied with a small smile. "Our food has arrived. We should eat first," Freddy said. "Ms. Ivana, the court has rejected your divorce petition. Additionally, Mr. Arsenio has already submitted a report stating that he will never agree to a divorce. The court is requesting solid evidence before they can approve your petition and prevent Mr. Arsenio from going back on his word." That was the message from Reno. "Tch, even the court can be bribed by him so easily," Ivana grumbled, letting out a heavy sigh. She felt suffocated and trapped, as if Arsen had locked every move she tried to make, leaving her powerless. Ivana stepped out of the car and walked toward the basement elevator. Her steps halted when she saw Arsen talking to someone in the emergency stairwell not far from her. "Who is he talking to?" she murmured. Curious, Ivana moved closer to the door, pulling out her phone. She needed to record their conversation—whatever it was—hoping it could serve as evidence for her. "Why are you doing this, Ar?" a woman’s voice asked. Ivana couldn’t see her face as the door was only slightly open. "Stop coming to see me. I don’t want anyone noticing your presence and getting suspicious. Now, leave," Arsen said. "I have one question for you, Arsen. Answer me honestly," the woman said. "Do you love Ivana?" she asked. "No. I have never loved her. Not even once." Thump! Ivana’s hand trembled violently as she held her phone. Her eyes welled up with tears, and her body suddenly felt weak.
