Chapter 13 - The mystery of the note

1099 Words
The two dashed from the school. Sophie pulled Alex’s hand, gripping it tightly as if her life depended on it and maybe it did. They were around a corner now, Alex tugged his hand from Sophie, tired from his sprint. “What was that!” He bellowed, enraged with her decisions. “Why did you run off like that, we almost had the pepper spray. We could’ve stopped the younger me.”  The chilly wind cooled the two from their pants. Drying the sweat off of their faces. “Don't you think I know that you halfwit?” She said, panting dangerously as she gripped the paper tighter in her hands. “We had to leave, I knew that revealing myself to the youngster would cause some form of danger but it's far worse than I’d imagined,” “What do you mean?” Alex looked at the crushed paper in her hands. Moving closer to her it made Sophie’s breath catch in her throat. She stared up at him as he towered her before sliding down the wall. “What's in your hands?”  “The reason we are still alive.” She gave him the paper but when he opened it he threw it on the ground in anger. “There is nothing on this paper!” Sophie looked at him, confused. She picked up the parchment reading over the words on it before showing him them. “Of course there is you twit! Open your eyes!” Alex stared at the blank piece of paper before placing his backhand over her forehead. “Are you ill?”  She glared daggers at him before slapping his hand off of her forehead. “Get your hand off of me you i***t!” She got up off of the dirty floors before dragging Alex further down the road. “Are you blind?” “I would ask you the very same thing Sophie..But I just think you're losing your mind.” He chuckled, pulling her in for a hug. “Now tell me the real reason you pulled me out of there.”  “I am telling the- fine....Alex, it has to do with this note but since you can't read it I'll read it for you.” He stopped her, gripping her shoulders while looking at her seriously. “Look, you have laughed at me now, tell me the truth.” She sighed, realising that the dimwit would never believe her and so she created an alternative. “Fine, he was too close to seeing you and I couldn't risk it, I’m sorry.”  Alex’s P.O.V I certainly was annoyed with her. She knew that we could have finished the mission and carried on to the next. My mother doesn’t have long and her explanation certainly isn't enough to capture any patience that I might have. “You mean to tell me….” I paused, taking in deep breaths. All I wanted to do at the moment was take the pepper spray from younger Alex and spray it into her eyes!  “You didn't take the pepper spray because “You. couldn't. risk. it. My mother is dying! I can't risk that!” She punched me in the arm, her face equally furious. “I know you don't want her to die! What do you think will happen if the youngster sees you! Huh! Do you think it will be like a walk in the park, you halfwit!” I gripped her shoulders pulling her closely to my face, narrowing my eyes to increase the coldness to my gaze. “Of course I know what will happen but you still could've taken up the bottle! The youngster was days away from seeing me!” She cowered under my gaze, tears tainting her eyes. I quickly began rubbing her shoulder as a means of comfort. Never would I have thought that she would cry...She's like a brick wall so what happened? Sophie’s P.O.V I had to cry. The bastard was making it difficult for me to concentrate on why the mystery person made such a note. My act sure got him scared. She looked like a deer in headlights, rubbing my shoulders as a way of comforting me. “Sophie...I’m sorry. I didn't mean to.” A sly smirk rested at the edge of my face desperate to show but I forced it down continuing my act. “Why would you shout at me like that? I was only trying to help.” The bewildered look on his face was priceless. ”Sophie...I” I turned around pushing his hand off before dashing off to Merlin knows where. “Sophie!” My feet led me to the delicious ice cream shop where I happily went inside. I had no money, Alex is the bank and I am the brawn. Oh well, I'll just sit down and go over what's on the parchment.  I pushed the glass door open and immediately Joe heard the jingling bells above. “Sophie! What brings you here?” Skipping towards him I gave him the most cheery smile I could muster. “Joe! I was just looking for a place to sit.” He smiled at me before serving another one of his customers who stared at me with interest. The day wasn't too hot or cold. It's just right, similar to my planet's climate. The little sunlight that seeped through the clouds was like a silver lining through grey times. I am glad that the note was my silver lining but it wasn't enough to stop the danger that follows. My reckless act has created a rift in this world, one that I hoped wouldn’t catch up to me. Alex can hardly understand the danger that I’ve done..we’ve done.  “Of course.. Of course, there is a table free over there.” I smiled at him, shaking off my thoughts before jogging over to the empty table in the corner, right beside the window. Behind me was a bookshelf, overflowing with knowledge. I’ve always loved books, they are much larger on my planet. As big as you and I, filled with giant words of supernatural creatures that lurk the land. I once read about a half horse, half man. They called it the centaur. It is believed to resign here on earth but I’ve never seen it. I was going to ask Alex about it but certain circumstances ban me from doing so. I uncrumpled the piece of paper in my hands, reciting the words before it all came to me...It couldn't be.
