Oliver Taylor"s screams fill my ears as I feel the weight of the bat ripped from my hands. Her father"s rage echoes throughout the night, and for one fleeting moment, I consider ending the fight with a single blow. But when I look into Taylor"s eyes, brimming with terror, I can"t bring myself to do it. I can’t kill her dad in front of her. There would be one too many witnesses. I hurl the bat away and instead grab her father as he crumples, his head nestled in my hands. Our eyes meet and in a split second, her terror shifts to surprise. That"s when we hear it—sirens in the distance. We take off running, our feet slamming against the pavement as we make our way back to Camile"s house.
