KILLIAN
Raelynn Penrose.
For years, I had wondered who my mate was, and how I would explain to her that I had to reject her. I felt pained, and I had prepared my wolf for this day, but it was a waste.
I’m stuck with Raelynn.
The girl who murdered my sister and got away with it because her father claimed she was too young, begged that he’d be indebted to me his whole life if I didn't prosecute her for her crimes, only to repay me with the biggest betrayal. The revelation has me as stunned as it did when she slipped from my grip and fell into her father’s grave.
“Let me see my sister, Alpha Killian.” Caspen demands, loitering on the porch for the last twenty minutes.
I was going to leave Raelynn with him, but Ariella had her brother carry her to the car and we brought her home.
“You are not welcome in my residence, was I not clear before?” I scowl. No one from Ronan’s bloodline is allowed anywhere near my packhouse, no one but Raelynn now. Of course, she had to be the exception. “Letting you stay in the pack is my kindness towards you, you have no business in my house, leave.”
“But my sister is here.”
“Forget you have a sister.”
He pauses, his eyebrows furrowing. “What?”
“You will see her when I allow it,” I tell him, my words escalating his concern and shock. He will yearn for his sister just as I have for mine. “I don't allow it now.”
“Killian?” Someone calls.
I turn just in time to see my sister coming out of the house, with her fiancé behind her. I told him to take her out before she sees Raelynn, but Liam has trouble doing anything right. Valerie can’t handle seeing Raelynn again, none of us can.
“What are these people doing here?”
“I’m trying to see my sister,” Caspen says, “She’s hurt and your brother won’t let me see her.”
“What sister?” Valerie frowns, her eyes flickering between us. Behind him, she spots Soraya, and points. “Ravenna?” She frowns, her head tilted towards me.
I don’t speak, I haven’t exactly thought out how to tell her the girl who murdered her twin sister is in our house right now, in our lives.
“That witch is here?” She gasps, having figured it out. “What is she doing here?” She asks, already trying to go back inside to look for Raelynn.
I catch her wrist before she can move. “Valerie,” I warn.
“I’m going to kill her,” she growls, struggling to break free of my grip. “Killian, let me go!”
I sigh, my eyes shifting towards Liam. “Take her,” I tell him.
Liam moves quickly, grabbing her from behind. Valerie kicks and screams, trying to break free. “How dare she come here after everything? Let me go, Liam, let me find that witch!”
“Calm down, baby,” Liam tells her, dropping his head in the crook of her head. “Raelynn is his mate.”
Valerie freezes, her wide gaze meeting mine. “His what?”
I look away.
I’ve betrayed my family as well as this pack for sparking a bond with Raelynn. I turn towards something safer, Caspen.
“Why are you still here?” I snap, my anger towards his sister and father extending towards him.
“I’m not leaving until I know my sister is okay,” he swallows. “I want to see her.”
“And I want to see mine, Caspen,” I say with a heavy sigh. “But thanks to yours? I can’t.”
His jaw tightens, hands balling into fists like he’s ready to fight me. He wouldn’t dare, he has just about as much courage as the little runt he wants to see. “She—”
“She what?” I raise an eyebrow. We had this very tangle a few years ago, and I know how it ends. “Didn’t do it?”
Caspen swallows, “No, but—Please let me see her once, Alpha Killian.”
“Go home,” I shoo him. “Unlike yours, my sister is dead, and I’ll never get to see her again. But you’ll see the muderous runt, I’m not going to kill her,” I tell him, waiting for him to let his guard down before I speak again. “Yet.”
I expect him to move now, but he doesn't, so I turn to Liam and two members of the patrol team.
“Throw him out,” I nod towards Caspen. “He is not to come within twenty feet of the pack house unless he has written authorisation.”
The patrol team manages to restrain Caspen with little effort, dragging him away. “Alpha Killian!” He screams, trying to crawl back. “You can’t do this!”
I smirk, seeping through the pack link since he’s too far to hear me. “Seems done to me.”
“Please,” he begs.
I shut him out before he can start to explain why I should let him see Raelynn. She’s not even conscious yet, and he is being annoying. When my sister passed, he was quick to console me with unchangeable theories of destiny, but now that he thinks his is in danger, he can’t keep it together. Hypocrite.
“Killian,” Valerie stomps her foot.
I force a smile, “Yes, princess?”
“What is she doing here?”
“Haven’t you heard?” My gaze narrows, “Don’t make me repeat it, Princess, it's tragic as is.”
“Why is she here?” She demands, arms crossed over her chest. “Don’t tell me you want her?” Her nose scrunches up in the way that reminds me of Violette. The two were identical down to their voice, but every time I look at Valerie, I can't help but think there should be two of her. And there would be, had I listened to Violette, and cut all ties with the crazy runt as she called her. “You have a mate, Kill, you chose Ariella.” She reminds me, “You can’t betray her for that witch. You have to reject her.”
My mind flickers to the cemetery and the memory of Raelynn on the ground plays behind my eyes. “I can’t.”
“Why not?” Valerie gasps. “You’ve always said you'd reject your fated mate for Ariella if you ever had one. Why does she change things?”
