Chapter 12

I walked into the school clutching my arm that had the infinity branded on it even though I had intentionally put on a long sleeve black crop top to hide it. I had matched my top with blue distressed jeans and wore black trainers. I wore simple diamond stud earings and like June, I had put little make up on and left my hair down. I had my backpack swung around one shoulder as I walked into the school hallway with June who seemed as happy as ever and I wished I was like her. In this moment I just wanted to be her as we walked into the school, me clutching one arm and then she beaming. She kept glancing at me and waving to other students who were in the hall that she seemes to know. I didn't even notice the students who were waving at me. I felt so alone, now that my best friend was gone and I couldn't just tell anyone what I was feeling because they would either not believe, freak out or not take it seriously. Maia was one of a kind and the world may not have deserved her but she deserved the world. I wish I had been in that room instead of Maia that day, I wish I was the person who was pierced with the stake, I wish I could have died so that she could live. She had so many things she wanted to do that she hadn't done and I took my life for granted. I believe that since I'm alive, I should do right by her. I shouldn't envy June or wish to be in her place, I should just wish to make my life right and admire her. I promise myself that I will always protect June in a way that I couldn't protect Maia. I hope Maia is happy where she is and is at peace, I thought as I looked at June before taking a moment to collect myself before I waved and smiled at the students who were waving at me. If that smile was real or not, I can't say. And if I will keep that promise, I don't know but I will try my best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ''Are you ok?'' I heard a voice ask me as I walked with my plates towards the table in the cafeteria but I was too distracted with voices to respond. ''You have to meet him anad get your head chopped'' one whispered but was interrupted by another that said,''You can't kill him or escape'' the second voice said with a little mocking laugh before another voice butted in and said ''Those two are crazy. Listen to me, the only choice you have is to give in'' the voices were now whispering to themselves in a strange language and seemed to forget that I was there. I wanted to ask them what they meant but I was stopped when I felt an elbow nudge my arm, breaking me away from the conversation going on in my head. ''Hey'' June said and I could see that she was seriously concerned and looked at me with a puzzled look. I knew that she was concerned because she was looking at me like I belonged in a psychiatric home. ''Hey'' I said back and as if nothing happened, I smiled and added, ''What's wrong'' ''You! You're what wrong'' she said not failing to respond and hurridly dragging me towards the empty table at the corner. ''I don't understand'' I lied with a smile. ''Seriously?'' she asked and I could see she believed ''Yeah, seriously'' I replied taking a bite of my mac 'n' cheese and taking glances at her. ''Fine. You were talking to yourself back there. Luckily there aren't many people here right now and I managed to distract the people who are'' she said with worry on her face. I wondered why she worried because she recently just met me and also, I wondered how she had distracted them but I figured it was best not to ask. ''I don't recall doing that'' And I didn't. I only remembered talking to them, I never responded and when I was about to, June distracted me. Maybe I was going crazy. Why did I have to get branded in the first place? Where did I go wrong? And who did this? These were the only things I could think of. ''I know that you know something and  it's fine that you don't want to tell me because you recently just met me. Maybe one day I'll earn your trust hopefully but before then, you need to open up to someone who will understand. I wish that person was me but it probably isn't. If you don't talk about it, it'll eat you up. I hope you do the right thing and next time focus on good stuff so that you don't get distracted and behave weirdly'' she said before shooting me a comforting smile and eating a chip. She was right. I needed to talk to someone. I would have liked to talk to her but she is also right on the basis that I don't know her. This brand was already eating me up and I knew there would be more to come and how would I manage that. I needed to figure something out until I found a way of removing it. ''Thanks'' I said and smiled at her. ''Anytime.'' she said and we both continued eating our meals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ''Hello'' I said to the person on the other line as I stood outside the school. ''Hi sweetie, how are you?'' my dad said with a familiar laugh as I listened to the thickness of his voice and I thought of how much he loved my mum and he had never thought about seeing another woman since my mother disappeared. I could also sense a lowness in his voice that could be caused by fatigue or stress. ''How are you dad?'' I asked stressing the you. He always asked about me and always cared for others but he never wanted to be pampered. ''I'm fine'' he said but I didn't believe him ''You're not and I can hear it in your voice'' I argued. ''Fine, I'm just tired. Are you happy now?'' he said with a laugh ''Dad, vampires don't get this tired even if they don't sleep. And even if they do it has to because of something serious. What is it?'' I asked worriedly. I had called him to tell him my problems but now I have to know his. ''Sometimes I wonder why I encouraged you to be smart'' he said not answering my question. ''Dad, is it stress from looking for mum?'' My dad never lied to me directly if he could. So the best thing, was to ask him direct questions. By the silence in his voice, I knew that I was right. So I said, ''Dad, if this is giving you this must stress, stop it. If you are meant to see her again then your paths will surely cross. Besides, your a vampire, you have all the time in the world. Take a moment for you and retire briefly from political affiars, and family affairs. Just focus on you'' I insisted ''You're right Sharon.'' he said ''Promise you'll take a break for you?'' I asked ''I promise'' he said and laughed. His laugh was contagious so I started laughing along. ''Before you go on that break, let me help you with something'' I said ''Really, what?'' he asked, curiosity filling his voice. ''It's a surprise, I'm on my way'' I said and climbed on to my bike and ending the call. I had told June already that I would be going to my dad and I had made sure she had a way of getting home. I put on my helmet before driving away on to the high way.
