Chapter 14: Shadows On The Snow

831 Words
Tuesday, January 21st. The Christmas lights were finally starting to come down around Evergreen Heights; some houses had bare porches now, but many still clung to the glow. Snowdrifts piled high along the streets, and the air smelled crisp and clean. Elara spent another perfect overnight at Julian’s. She arrived after Vanessa’s shift, left before dawn with his kiss still warm on her lips and the faint scent of his cologne on her skin. Tuesdays had become her lifeline—twenty-four hours of pretending the rest of the world didn’t exist. But the rest of the world had plans. Alex came back from his family ski trip on Thursday afternoon. He texted her Thursday night: Alex: Back in town! Missed you so much. Dinner tomorrow? I’ve got stories and a souvenir for you ❤️ Elara stared at the message in her bedroom, fairy lights from the holidays still strung across her ceiling. Guilt twisted in her gut—not sharp, but dull and persistent. She’d barely thought about Alex over break. Every moment had been Julian. She typed back: Elara: Welcome home! Yeah, dinner sounds good. Pick me up at 7? Alex: Can’t wait 😍 Friday evening, he arrived right on time—floppy blond hair a little windswept, cheeks tanned from the slopes, carrying a small wrapped box. He hugged her tightly on the porch, smelling like cold air and the same cologne he’d worn since high school. “You look amazing,” he said, eyes bright. “Did you do something different with your hair?” She smiled weakly. “Just grew it out a bit.” Vanessa waved from the doorway. “Have fun, you two! Don’t keep her out too late, Alex.” They went to their old favorite Italian place downtown—the one with red-checkered tablecloths and candles in Chianti bottles. Holiday garland still hung along the windows; a soft instrumental “Jingle Bells” played in the background. Alex talked the whole time: black diamond runs, his little sister wiping out in the snow, funny stories about his parents arguing over directions. He was sweet, enthusiastic, exactly the same boy she’d started dating to feel normal. He slid the gift across the table after dessert. Inside: a delicate silver bracelet with a tiny ski charm. “I saw it and thought of you,” he said, grinning. “Even though you hate skiing.” She fastened it on her wrist, next to the gold key necklace she never took off (tucked carefully under her sweater so the pendant stayed hidden). “It’s beautiful. Thank you.” He reached for her hand. “I missed you so much, Elara. Like… really missed you. Break made me realize how much I love having you in my life.” Her stomach dropped. “Alex…” He squeezed her fingers. “I know we’ve been casual, but I want more. I want us to be official-official. Like, tell everyone. Plan a real future.” The candle flickered between them. She could feel the weight of the key against her skin—Julian’s promise, Julian’s love. “I… I’ve been thinking a lot too,” she said carefully. “And I care about you. A lot. But I don’t think I’m in the same place.” His face fell. “What do you mean?” “I don’t think we want the same things anymore.” She pulled her hand back gently. “You deserve someone who can give you everything. And I’m not that person.” Silence stretched. Outside, snow started to fall again, soft against the restaurant windows. “Is there someone else?” he asked quietly. The question hung in the air. She thought of Julian—waiting for her text, probably looking at the clock right now, wondering how her night was going. “No,” she lied. “It’s just me. I need to figure myself out first.” Alex nodded slowly, eyes glassy. “Okay. If that’s what you need.” They drove home in near silence. He walked her to the door, gave her a sad, awkward hug. “I’ll always care about you, Elara.” “I know. Me too.” She watched him drive away, taillights disappearing into the snow. Inside, Vanessa was asleep. Elara went straight to her room, pulled out her phone. Elara: It’s done. Told Alex tonight. It’s over. Three dots appeared instantly. Julian: How are you feeling? Elara: Sad for him. Relieved for us. Guilty. All of it. Julian: You did the right thing. For everyone. Elara: Can I come over tomorrow? Vanessa’s on days this weekend. Julian: Door’s unlocked. I’ll leave the tree lights on. She smiled through the ache in her chest. Elara: I love you. Julian: I love you too. Always. She fell asleep with the bracelet on her wrist and the gold key against her heart, snow tapping softly at her window like a promise. One shadow lifted. The glow stayed.
