I became vaguely aware of worried voices talking hurriedly around me. My whole body felt heavy and ached as if I had strained every muscle in my body to the breaking point. I tried to groan, only to realize I didn't have the voice for it. Once that realization hit me another followed, I couldn’t feel my body, not from a single toe to my eyelids.
Where the hell was I? What was happening? Last thing I remembered was boarding Leroy's private jet. But what happened after that? My memory hit me all at once, the cityscape on the wrong side of the plane, heading to talk to the pilot, the group of people in the cockpit, and the syringe in my neck.
I still couldn't move but I was now aware that I was lying on something hard and cold and I could hear the voices around me more clearly now, deciphering around four different tones. However there could be more and they could just be silent. I kept as still as possible, even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to move if I wanted to. I dreaded them knowing I was awake. As they continued speaking, I heard footsteps shuffling toward me.
"Look he's still breathing, so I obviously didn't kill him.” A soft woman's voice quickly stated. She was the one with the light footsteps, her voice echoing off of the walls above me.
"I don't know about you but I've never seen a dead fae before.” A gravely male voice bit back, seeming farther away from us. “For all I know they breathe after they're dead.” He continued before being cut off.
"That's just ridiculous nothing breathes after it's dead." Another male voice, but this one sounded younger and seemed he was finding humor in the situation.
The last voice I’d heard much earlier finally cut in, sounding slightly nervous. "Can we all just agree that his skin going human pale isn't normal and try and solve the situation please?" The deeper female voice sounded. "Exactly how much of the drug did you administer to him?" She questioned.
"I was told specifically that it would take an entire syringe to take down a fae his weight." The younger female voice stated back, her feet shuffling once more, away from me.
I wanted to cry out, throw out horrible things at them. How dare they poison me and slap me on the ground like some fresh game ready to be gutted. The conversation continued in the same general direction of what the hell did you do and more importantly, can they fix it. Fortunately for them I knew exactly what was going on, based on what they were saying my skin had lost its gold Sheen which could only mean my aura had pulled so far back that it retreated into my body. This was a feat I had only been able to achieve once before and never did again in fear of being caught by my father, having him find out I was purposefully weakening myself in order to avoid hurting people. Much to my surprise and almost horror my aura had been diminished to such a size that it was hard for even me to pinpoint. Small and faint but it was there. I grabed hold of it with all I had and pulled. My breathing hitched. God it hurt, it hurt so bad. Everything ached, down to my marrow. It was as if my very soul was in pain. The people around me had silenced. They must have heard my struggle.
I was tired of hearing them talk about me, I knew the voices well enough. I wanted to see the faces of my assailants. I pushed through the pain and managed to grow my aura to where it at least radiated off my chakras but I couldn't push it any farther from my body, couldn't even get it to rest on my skin, which would bring my color back. slowly, I opened my eyes, the light blinding for a few moments. I felt as if my world spun before blinking multiple times and turning my head to the side. My cheek pressed to the hard ground I took in a ragged, painful breath. “What did you do to me?" I rasped out, my gaze falling on the first woman who had spoken, she still stood closest to me.
“Why drugged you of course,” She piped up. “Admittedly you weren't supposed to pass out, it was just ment to stop your freaky fairy powers from working on us.” When she saw my frown she added in, “not knock you out cold."
I just stared up at them in stunned silence. Their eyes the only things showing from behind their masks. The two women wore white masks and the two men had on black masks.
"Obviously we need to do more research." The taller and deeper voiced man stated. "We didn't take into account that your poor health might have affected how the drug worked on you, and for that we are sorry.” He paused and I watched as his eyebrow raised under the mask. “We are not sorry for drugging you however and if the situation arises we will do it again."
My eyes left his face, ignoring him because my mouth became dry as I tried to swallow. I couldn't let them see I was afraid.
Alright, think Koren. My head shifted once again, eyes falling on the ceiling. They obviously want something from me or I wouldn’t be here. Wherever here is. We obviously weren't on the plane anymore but it was too dark for me to see properly. Some kind of warehouse maybe? The acoustics of the place made it seem like the room was very large. Focus and try to find a way out.
"What is it you need from me?" I asked finally, my voice coming out raspy. I spoke as confidently as I could for being hopelessly out numbered and overpowered.
"That is a very good question," the younger man said before continuing, and stepping towards me. "We are here to make you an offer of sorts."
So they did need something from me. I could use this as leverage perhaps. " What kind of offer? and what do I stand to gain from this?" I asked.
The older woman started laughing, shaking her head. “Oh my dear princeling, you misunderstand. You don't have a choice, this offer is one you can't refuse. You either do as our organization says, or you die."
My whole body went cold. She wasn't joking, I could tell. She really ment to kill me if I didn't do as I was told and in my current state she easily could. I nodded in understanding, not trusting my voice to hold up against the fear I felt pooling in my stomach, cold and heavy trying to eat away at me.
“Good," the older man said. "Now that we have reached an understanding of sorts, agent May." He called to which the younger woman stiffened at that.
May.
“Yes sir?" She responded, eyes focused on the man. He must be the leader of their freakish cult. My brain was still trying to figure out who and what their organization was. Were they human? I couldn’t tell.
"Since the young fae prince already knows your face and now your name, you will be charged with overseeing his mission.” The man said, tilting his head at May when she just stood there staring back at him. I couldn't be certain but she seemed angry. Thinking for a moment that she was going to protest, but she simply raised her fist to her heart in some sort of salute. "Very good, we will be at the jet, when your done."
May turned to face me as the others walked away. I shivered, her warm brown eyes burning into me through the slits in her polished white mask.
“Oh and May," The leader called back over his shoulder, May turning her head at her name. “Don’t mess up this time. You know what's at stake." The young woman went very still, then nodded not turning back to me till their footsteps couldn't be heard anymore.
"Could you stop that please." She hissed at me, her voice smooth.
"Stop what exactly." I ventured. She audibly growled and threw her head back at that.
"Stop looking so god damn human, it’s throwing me off and making me feel sorry for your stupid ass."
“Oh." Was all I replied, slightly confused by her. She was talking about my skin. I'm sure without it's golden hue I probably did look very human. I felt like apologizing but she didn’t really deserve it. “I can't stop, I tried to push my aura back out around me but it won't budge." I bit back, glaring at her slightly.
She was silent before exhaling loudly. “We better just get this over with then" she huffed reaching up to the top of her head and pulling back her hood and the mask along with it. For a moment I couldn't place where I had seen her before, but she certainly looked familiar. Her rounded jaw and thin neck, her deep chestnut brown eyes with a smattering of freckles across her cheeks and nose, her straight brown hair cut into a bob.
I looked at her quizzically, trying to place where I knew her from, when realization dawned on me, "Mousie?" I asked in astonishment, it was that mouse haired maid who woke me up this morning then glared at me on my way out.
She gave me another fiery glare at hearing me call her mousie. She reached forward for me and I braced my self for a blow before she pulled her hand back. "Do you want help up or not." She sighed.
Surpised she was offering to help, I responded hesitantly. "Yeah actually, I can't seem to find enough strength to sit up.” I tried to make light of it by smiling and I'm sure I came off as the opposite of convincing. She wrapped one arm behind my shoulders and placed the other on my chest for balance then slowly helped me into a sitting position turning me so that I could could get my legs under me to kneel.
"Thank you.” I sighed. I ment it too, sitting up felt a lot better. I was still in quite a bit of pain and took to massaging my shoulders in a vain attempt to try and ease some of the aching I was feeling throughout my entire body.
“Don't mention it,” she said while shoving a black bag onto my lap, eyes trailing my hands rubbing my shoulders. “Ever.” She finished, now watching me as I took the bag and looked down at it.
“What's this?" I asked, glancing at it then up to her standing form.
“It’s everything your gonna need to take down the target vampire." She stated cooly. I felt my body stiffen, they wanted me to kill someone. And not just any someone, they wanted me to kill an Anu.
“W-wait,” I stammered. “And by take down you don't actually mean." I stopped not finishing my thought, letting my words hang in the air hoping she knew what I was implying.
“Yes, I do mean." She said, not finishing her sentence either and just staring at me like I was an imbecile.
“But that's impossible," I rushed out. " No one can kill an Anu except maybe another Anu. I know I can't do it. If I could I wouldn't be in the position I'm in." I continued, trying to hold the panic back from seeping into my voice.
A slow grin formed on her face as she gazed at me. “Well, you’ll just have to figure that one out won’t you, dear.” She stated.
Something in her voice held promise and I was positive I was not ready to find out what she had planned
