Chapter 5: Into the Lion's Den

796 Words
The massive iron gates of the Sterling Estate groaned open like the jaws of a waiting monster. As the Maybach rolled down the long, winding driveway lined with ancient, weeping willow trees, the sheer scale of the gothic mansion came into view. It was a fortress of dark stone, sharp spires, and blacked-out windows, isolated deep within the dense woods outside the city. It looked beautiful, grand, and entirely lethal—just like the man sitting beside me. The car came to a smooth halt in front of the grand stone steps. Alexander shifted back across the seat, his imposing presence immediately demanding my attention. "Wake him up gently," Alexander murmured, his icy gray eyes fixed on Leo’s sleeping form. "My house staff is loyal, but the guards at the door are pureblood vampires. They will sense his blood the second we step out. I need him calm so his aura doesn't flare." I didn't answer him. Instead, I pressed a soft kiss to Leo’s forehead, gently rocking him. "Leo, sweetie, wake up. We’re here." Leo blinked open his big, gray eyes, yawning softly as he looked out the window. "Mommy... is this a castle?" "It's a temporary stay, baby," I whispered, shooting a warning glare at Alexander before he could open his mouth. The door was pulled open by a guard in a dark suit. Alexander stepped out first, the cool night air rushing into the cabin. I climbed out right behind him, keeping Leo securely hoisted on my hip. The second my feet hit the gravel, I felt it—dozens of invisible eyes watching us from the shadows of the estate. The predatory tension in the air was thick enough to choke a human. Alexander escorted us up the stone steps, his heavy hand resting possessively on the small of my back. His palms were burning hot through the fabric of my clothes, a mocking reminder of how intimately he knew every inch of my body. I wanted to pull away, but the low, warning growl vibrating in his chest told me to stay close for protection. The massive double doors swung open, revealing a grand foyer made of polished black marble and illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier. But we weren't alone. Standing at the top of the sweeping marble staircase was a woman. She was breathtakingly beautiful, with pale skin that looked like porcelain and long, platinum-blonde hair falling down her back in perfect waves. She wore a crimson silk gown that hugged her dangerous curves, dripping in diamonds. Her eyes were a piercing, unnatural shade of ruby red. Victoria Vance. Alexander’s pureblood Queen. "Alexander, darling," Victoria purred, her voice dripping with a dangerous, melodic sweetness as she glided down the stairs with terrifying, fluid speed. "You've been gone for days. The council was beginning to ask questions about your sudden absence." Her ruby eyes snapped down, landing directly on me. The fake sweetness instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated disgust. "And what is this?" Victoria hissed, her nostrils flaring as she sniffed the air. "You brought your little human pet back? I thought you threw this garbage out four years ago." Before I could open my mouth to fire back, Victoria’s gaze dropped to Leo. In an instant, her entire body went rigid. Her fangs dropped, extending fully over her lower lip as her eyes widened in absolute shock and rage. As a pureblood vampire, she could taste the royal bloodline radiating off the boy. She could smell the truth. "A hybrid..." Victoria whispered, her voice shaking with a volatile mix of fury and horror. She took a predatory step toward us, her claws extending from her manicured fingers. "You bred with a human? You brought an abomination into my house?!" "Watch your tongue, Victoria," Alexander roared, his voice booming through the foyer like thunder. He stepped directly in front of me and Leo, his own fangs dropping as his eyes flared a blinding, lethal crimson. A massive wave of pure, suffocating King’s aura exploded from his body, forcing Victoria back a step. "That 'hybrid' is my son," Alexander growled, the dark vibration making the crystal chandelier rattle above us. "He is the legal heir to the Sterling throne. You will respect him, and you will respect his mother. If you or anyone else in this coven touches a single hair on their heads, I will drain you dry myself. Do I make myself clear?" Victoria stared at him, her chest heaving with rage, before locking her murderous red eyes onto mine. I gripped Leo tighter, swallowing the lump of fear in my throat. I was back in his world, trapped between a possessive vampire king and his psychotic pureblood wife. There was no turning back now.
