The sun was already high in the sky, but Maffeo didn't realize it. He must at all costs take something to eat and rest a little. Tomorrow was another day. The days follow each other, but they are not the same, he says? Around him it was still silence, nothing moved, not the slightest dog barking, not the slightest rooster crowing or the slightest bird flying away. All around him was the desert of souls. Maffeo is also deserted at times, no doubt tired of this day which was his.
So today is the day of his father's postponed funeral.
The neighborhood and its surroundings are cordoned off. Snipers placed on the few roofs of the houses. The church was stormed by Don Rodriguez's friends and henchmen.
The body of Don Rodriguez was embalmed and rolled contrary to what was previously planned. A last minute change orchestrated by his son Maffeo who took everyone by surprise even if it meant going against the last wishes of his late father.
Things have changed since that first burial attempt.
In fact, Don Rodriguez wanted at all costs for his body to be burned and for his ashes to be scattered in the river near his childhood village. In no case did he want his body to become an object of worship and devotion.
Maffeo had nothing to do with that in the face of the multiple assassination attempts suffered by him and the rest of his family members.
Thus, in this disorder and to enforce republican laws, he had filed, without everyone's knowledge, a request to the court to obtain this change of decision. Reason told him that upon hearing that everything was clarified, the body of the latter would be buried in the cathedral of the church and not burned for reasons of investigation.
To better put an end to his argument, he argued that the body of his late father bore traces of unexplained scars and teeth.
Reason was given to him for the need for investigation. It is then accompanied by his mother installed in a controlled wheelchair protected in front of a beautiful glass window like a papamobil that they move forward for a final meditation. In this crowd of people Maffeo noticed the innocuous presence of a lady with a face emaciated by age. She had a black veil on her head which covered her entire body. She walked with difficulty with the help of a wooden carne
⁃ Who are you, you old woman asks him?
⁃ What are you doing here ?
- am I also a victim?
- a victim exclaims Maffeo. All I have here is the lifeless body of my father and you say that you are a victim.
- forgive me for my insolence, old lady, once again. Are you doing well .
- so answers the elderly woman. I am sane. My son my child? What am I going to do now to survive?
- if you don't answer me I will have to escort you out.
- Giovanni you left so quickly and too soon my little son.
No longer understanding anything. He turned towards his sister, whispering in her ears.
- look. you see. I don't know what this old woman is saying. Apparently she would have lost her grandson in I don't know what where.
Maffeo's sister barely looked when she recognized this woman's face and crouched down beside her.
- Hey grandma, you came. forgive my brother. This is because with the latest events he no longer knows where to turn, he is so preoccupied and overwhelmed.
She stood up and addressed her brother Maffeo.
- listen you better apologize to grandma.
- You don't explain anything to me and you ask me to apologize to an old woman who has lost her mind.
- What do you have today, brother? Do I recognize you anymore? Let me explain to you. This old woman about whom you speak so badly is the grandmother of one of your guards who died the other day in these same places.
Ashamed and confused
- and you let me get so down on myself.
-he had to. You have a lot to learn. It seems that Europe has changed you.
Maffeo offered his sincere apologies to the old woman while renewing his full support in finding those responsible for the death of her grandson. So his soul can rest in peace. A promise he makes to his grandmother.
She thanked him warmly with a hug.
Then he looked at the missing elderly woman with the feeling of wanting to do more for her and for all the other deceased people.
Intrigued, he asks his little sister if the second, that is to say the second guard who died on the same day, if he did not have a family and that it would be good for him to visit his family and those of the others who had suffered the consequences of such a war.
But Elena, her little sister, was very surprised by her brother's ability and quickly forgot it.
- but I thought I gave you an envelope concerning the report on the victims.
- the red envelope is that.
- Yes.
- I'm not telling you anything, when did I want to open it?
Rosa interrupts
- I'm sorry maffeo. I think we're all exhausted and we'd better go home and recuperate.
So they Maffeo his little sister and their mother in communion decide to go to the celebrant father for the last details of the burial.
The farewell was heartbreaking especially when it came his turn to prostrate himself in front of his father's body and say that it was the last time he would see him again not in state but in a coffin. He cursed this day, swearing revenge.
At home, one of his first decisions was to see with the family how to proceed to help all these victims.
The image of this woman, the elderly woman from the church walking on three legs, remained frozen in his memory.
