Chapter Four: Unraveling Threads

1248 Words
Arden's : I can’t shake the feeling of Darian’s eyes on me. Even though I’m back in the kitchen, scrubbing the same endless stack of dishes, my mind replays every word of our conversation in the courtyard. His voice, low and accusing, echoes in my head: *You’re more than what you’re pretending to be.* My hands shake as I dip them into the soapy water, my breath shallow. How close had I come to revealing everything? He doesn’t know, I remind myself. Not yet. But Darian is sharp—too sharp. He sees through the cracks in my story, and that terrifies me. What if he finds out? I glance around the kitchen, trying to focus on the noise and activity around me. The clang of pots, the sizzling of food, the shuffling feet of the staff. None of them pay me any attention. I’m invisible here. And that’s exactly how it needs to stay. But something tells me Darian won’t let me remain invisible for long. I finish the dishes and head out back again, slipping away from the others. I need a moment alone to breathe, to think. The cool breeze hits my face as I step into the small courtyard behind the packhouse. The air smells fresher out here, less oppressive than the suffocating tension inside. I lean against the stone wall, closing my eyes for a moment. I need to stay calm. If I panic, I’ll make mistakes, and mistakes will lead Darian right to the truth. And if he finds out about the baby— I stop the thought cold, clamping down on the rising fear in my chest. I can’t think about that. Not now. Not here. But the thought is like a thorn buried deep in my skin, always there, always hurting. The secret I’m carrying weighs on me every moment of every day. I left my old pack because of it, because I knew what they would do if they discovered my pregnancy. An Omega with no wolf carrying the child of an Alpha… I wasn’t just disposable. I was a threat. I’ve lived every day since then in fear of being found. I’ve stayed on the run, never staying in one place too long. But now, here, under Darian’s roof, I feel the walls closing in. His pack is strong, ruthless, and protective. How long can I hide among them? A rustling sound pulls me from my thoughts, and I snap my eyes open, my heart jumping. Someone’s coming. I press myself against the wall, holding my breath as footsteps grow closer. A figure steps around the corner, and I exhale in relief when I see it’s not Darian—but Aiden, his Beta. He pauses when he sees me, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly. “What are you doing out here?” “I—” My voice falters, and I clear my throat. “I needed a break. It’s… overwhelming in there.” Aiden steps closer, his gaze studying me like Darian had, and it makes me just as nervous. There’s something about Aiden—his watchful silence, the way he moves with the kind of calm that only comes from years of living under constant threat. He’s not as intense as Darian, but he’s just as dangerous. “You’re hiding something,” he says, his voice blunt and direct. I swallow hard, forcing myself to hold his gaze. “I’m not hiding anything.” Aiden doesn’t respond right away. He just stares at me for a long moment, as if weighing my words, testing their truth. Then, to my surprise, he nods. “I don’t know what Darian sees in you, but you’re not just another stray. If you were, you’d be gone by now.” I try not to flinch at his words. He’s right. I’m not just another stray, and Darian knows it. But I can’t afford to give anything away. Not to him, not to anyone. “I’m just trying to survive,” I say quietly. Aiden’s expression softens, just for a moment, and I catch a glimpse of something unexpected in his eyes—pity. He knows I’m in over my head. Maybe he even feels sorry for me. But I know better than to mistake pity for protection. “You’re lucky Darian hasn’t turned you away,” Aiden says. “But luck runs out. Be careful.” Without another word, he turns and walks away, leaving me alone in the courtyard once again. His warning lingers in the air, heavy and real. Be careful. --- Aiden found Darian in the training yard, his movements fluid and lethal as he sparred with one of the younger wolves. The pack watched from the sidelines, awed by the precision of their Alpha’s strikes. Darian had always been more than just powerful—he was calculated, disciplined, a leader who inspired loyalty through both fear and respect. As the sparring session ended, Darian wiped the sweat from his brow and turned to Aiden, his brow furrowing. “What is it?” Aiden’s expression was serious as he approached. “The girl—Arden. She’s hiding something.” Darian’s gaze sharpened. “What makes you say that?” “She’s scared,” Aiden said simply. “I saw it in her eyes. She’s not just running from someone. She’s running from something *inside* her.” Darian exhaled, his eyes darkening. “I’ve felt it too. She’s lying, but I can’t figure out why.” “She won’t last long here,” Aiden warned. “If she doesn’t come clean, the others will start to notice.” Darian’s jaw tightened, his frustration evident. He hated games, and Arden was playing one. He could feel the lies tangled around her like a cloak, hiding the truth beneath. But the more she kept from him, the more dangerous she became. If she posed a threat to his pack, he wouldn’t hesitate to deal with her. But something inside him hesitated. Something about her called to him in a way he couldn’t explain, and it unsettled him. He had always been able to trust his instincts, to read people. But Arden… she was an enigma. “Keep an eye on her,” Darian finally said. “If she makes a wrong move, I want to know.” Aiden nodded, his gaze lingering on Darian for a moment. “You’re drawn to her.” Darian’s eyes flashed, but he didn’t deny it. “She’s more than she seems. And I need to know why.” --- Arden's : The kitchen is quiet when I return, the staff busy with preparations for the evening meal. I slip back into my routine, keeping my head down, doing my best to stay out of sight. But my mind is still racing, Aiden’s words echoing in my head. *Be careful.* I don’t know how much longer I can keep up this charade. Darian and Aiden are already suspicious, and it’s only a matter of time before they start digging deeper. When that happens, my carefully built walls will come crumbling down. And then, there will be no escape. I can’t stay here. But I can’t leave, either. Not until I know it’s safe. Not until I’m sure I won’t be hunted again. I take a deep breath, steeling myself. Whatever happens, I can’t let them find out the truth. Because if they do, the secret I’ve kept hidden for so long will destroy everything. Everything.
