Chapter Five: Dangerous Secrets

1232 Words
Arden's : I pace the small room they’ve given me, my nerves unraveling. I can’t stay here much longer. Darian is too close to figuring me out, and Aiden’s eyes feel like they’re always watching. Even the kitchen staff has started to give me strange looks, their suspicion growing with each passing day. I don’t belong here, and they all know it. I stop in front of the small window, staring out at the dense woods surrounding the packhouse. There’s a path just beyond the tree line, one I could take to disappear into the wilderness. I’ve thought about running more times than I can count since I arrived, but something keeps pulling me back. Something deeper than fear. Darian. Every time I think about leaving, his face flashes in my mind, those dark eyes full of intensity and frustration. There’s something about him that draws me in, even though I know he’s dangerous. He’s everything I should be running from—possessive, ruthless, and unyielding. But somehow, being around him feels… safe. Safe in a way I haven’t felt in a long time. I can’t afford to think like that. I have to stay focused. My survival depends on it. But deep down, I know the truth: I don’t just want to survive. I want something more, something I’ve been too afraid to admit, even to myself. I want to feel like I matter to someone. I shake my head, trying to clear the dangerous thoughts. I can’t let myself get attached to anyone here, especially not Darian. If he knew the truth, if he knew what I was hiding, he wouldn’t look at me with the same intensity. He wouldn’t protect me. He’d see me as a threat, just like everyone else. A knock at the door snaps me out of my thoughts, and my heart skips a beat. I freeze, my pulse quickening as I turn toward the door. It’s too early for the kitchen staff to check on me. And Aiden never bothers with pleasantries like knocking. “Arden,” comes Darian’s voice from the other side. I swallow hard, my hands shaking as I step toward the door. What does he want now? Has he finally figured it out? Slowly, I open the door to find him standing in the hallway, his expression unreadable. He’s changed out of his usual training clothes, dressed in a dark shirt that clings to his muscled frame. The sight of him sends a wave of heat through me, and I hate that I can’t control my reaction. “We need to talk,” he says, his voice low and firm. I nod, stepping back to let him in. My small room feels even smaller with him inside it, his presence filling every corner of the space. I cross my arms over my chest, trying to hide how nervous I am. “What’s this about?” I ask, keeping my voice steady. He closes the door behind him, leaning against it as he watches me with those piercing eyes. “You’ve been here for almost a week, and I still don’t know anything about you. Who you really are.” I swallow hard, avoiding his gaze. “I told you, I’m just trying to survive.” “I don’t believe you.” His voice is sharp, cutting through the lie I’ve been clinging to. “You’re hiding something, Arden. Something big. And I’m done waiting for you to come clean.” My heart pounds in my chest, and I fight to keep my expression neutral. He’s too close to the truth. If I don’t play this carefully, I’ll lose everything. “I’m not hiding anything,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. Darian takes a step closer, his eyes locked on mine. “Don’t lie to me. I can feel it, Arden. There’s something you’re not telling me, and I need to know what it is before it gets any more dangerous.” Dangerous. That word makes my stomach twist in knots. He’s right—there is danger, but it’s not the kind he thinks. The real danger is what will happen if he finds out the truth. If he learns about the baby. I feel the weight of his gaze, the intensity in his eyes making it impossible to look away. For a moment, I consider telling him everything. Letting it all out, the secret I’ve been carrying alone for so long. Maybe he would understand. Maybe he wouldn’t hate me. But then I remember the ruthlessness in his eyes, the way he rules his pack with iron control. He doesn’t tolerate weakness or deception. If he knew, if he found out… He’d turn me away. Or worse. “I’m not lying,” I say, forcing my voice to stay steady. “I’m just trying to survive. That’s all.” Darian doesn’t move, his eyes narrowing as if he’s trying to read the truth in my words. The silence between us stretches, thick and heavy with tension. Finally, he exhales, a low growl escaping his throat. “You’re not just anyone, Arden. I know you’re running from something, but whatever it is, it’s putting my pack at risk. I won’t let that happen.” I look down at the floor, unable to meet his gaze any longer. My chest tightens with the weight of his words. He’s right. I am a risk. Staying here, letting him get closer—it’s only going to end in disaster. “I’m not a threat,” I whisper, though I don’t know if I believe it myself. “Then prove it.” His voice softens just slightly, but the command in his tone remains. “Tell me the truth.” The truth. The one thing I can’t give him. I clench my fists at my sides, the fear clawing at my throat. If I tell him, he’ll throw me out. He’ll see me as a liability, a danger to his pack. And then I’ll be alone again, with nowhere to go. But if I don’t tell him, he’ll find out eventually. And by then, it’ll be too late. I look up at him, my heart racing. His eyes are locked on mine, and for a moment, I think I see something other than suspicion in his gaze. Something softer. But then it’s gone, replaced by the hard, unyielding Alpha that everyone fears. “I can’t,” I finally say, my voice barely audible. Darian’s expression hardens, the softness in his eyes disappearing. He steps back, crossing his arms over his chest as his jaw clenches. “If you won’t tell me, then I have no reason to trust you.” The coldness in his words sends a chill through me, but I know he’s right. Trust is a luxury I can’t afford right now. “I’ll be watching you, Arden,” he says, his voice low and threatening. “And if I find out you’re putting my pack in danger, I won’t hesitate to deal with you.” With that, he turns and walks out of the room, leaving me standing there, my heart racing and my mind spinning. I’m running out of time. I can’t stay here much longer. I can’t let him get any closer. If I do, I’ll lose everything. And the secret I’ve been hiding will destroy us both.
