Benjamin Tries to Bond with Madison, Creating Tension The Saturday air was crisp, with a faint promise of sunshine breaking through the clouds. Emma sat on the edge of the couch, nervously clutching her coffee mug as she glanced out the window. Madison had spent the morning rearranging her stuffed animals, chattering with excitement about spending the day with Benjamin. Emma couldn’t help but wonder how the day would go. It wasn’t that she didn’t want Benjamin and Madison to reconnect—deep down, she wanted her daughter to have a relationship with her father. But the scars from their failed marriage ran deep, and Benjamin’s track record of inconsistency made her anxious. “Mom, is Dad coming soon?” Madison asked, her almond-brown eyes sparkling with anticipation. Emma forced a smile. “He’ll be here in a few minutes. Did you pick out what you want to wear to the aquarium?” Madison nodded eagerly and ran off to her room. Emma sighed, taking another sip of her coffee. The front door buzzed a moment later, and she reluctantly got up to answer it. Benjamin stood on the other side, holding a box of donuts in one hand and a warm smile on his face. He looked good—too good, Emma thought irritably. His sharp blue eyes and tailored jacket reminded her of the man she had fallen in love with years ago. But she wouldn’t let herself get distracted. Not today. “Morning, ” he greeted. His voice was calm, almost apologetic. “Morning, ” Emma replied shortly, stepping aside to let him in. Madison’s delighted scream echoed through the apartment as she ran into the living room. “Dad!” Benjamin crouched down, holding his arms wide open. “There’s my little girl! Look what I brought—your favorite!” Madison’s face lit up when she saw the donuts, and Emma stood to the side, watching the exchange. It was heartwarming to see her daughter so happy, but a part of her couldn’t shake the worry. Benjamin had a knack for sweeping in with grand gestures, only to disappear when it really mattered. “Are you ready for the aquarium?” he asked, ruffling Madison’s blonde curls. “Yeah! Mom packed my snacks and everything!” Madison said, darting to grab her jacket. Benjamin turned to Emma. “Thanks for getting everything ready. ” “Of course, ” she replied, her tone neutral. “Just… don’t forget she’s allergic to peanuts. And make sure she wears her scarf if it gets colder. ” “I’ve got it under control, ” Benjamin said, though his smile faltered slightly. “You don’t have to worry, Emma. ” Her jaw tightened, but she nodded. “I always worry. She’s my daughter. ” Benjamin didn’t argue, and within minutes, he and Madison were heading out the door. Emma watched from the window as they climbed into his car, her heart a jumble of hope and unease. The day passed slowly. Emma tried to distract herself by cleaning, answering emails, and even starting a new recipe she had bookmarked weeks ago. But every few minutes, she found herself checking her phone for updates. Benjamin had texted a picture of Madison grinning in front of a jellyfish exhibit, followed by another of her holding a balloon shaped like a sea turtle. Madison was clearly having a good time, but Emma couldn’t shake her apprehension. She knew Benjamin’s charm well enough to recognize it was often surface-level. Would he follow through on his promises to be more present in Madison’s life? By early evening, they were back. Madison burst through the door, her face flushed with excitement as she carried a bag of souvenirs. “Mom! Look what Dad got me!” She pulled out a plush dolphin and a small snow globe featuring the aquarium’s logo. Emma smiled, bending down to inspect her treasures. “Wow, those are beautiful, sweetheart. ” Benjamin entered the apartment behind her, his expression unreadable as he set Madison’s backpack on the floor. “Thanks for today, Dad, ” Madison said, hugging him tightly. “You’re welcome, kiddo, ” he replied, kissing the top of her head. “I’ll see you soon, okay?” As Madison scampered off to her room to show her toys to her stuffed animals, the room grew heavier. Emma and Benjamin stood a few feet apart, neither quite knowing how to bridge the gap. “She had a great time, ” Benjamin said finally, his tone almost defensive. Emma crossed her arms. “I’m glad. She deserves that. ” “I’m trying, Emma, ” he added, his voice softening. “I’m really trying to be better—for her and for us. ” “There is no ‘us, ’ Benjamin, ” she said sharply. “There hasn’t been for years. This isn’t about me or you. It’s about Madison. And if you’re serious about being there for her, then prove it. Be consistent. Show up. ” “I’m not the same person I was back then, ” he said, frustration creeping into his voice. “And yet you keep reminding me of him, ” she retorted. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Benjamin exhaled heavily, rubbing the back of his neck. “I know I messed up. I know I hurt you, Emma. But Madison—she’s what matters now. I’ll keep showing up, I promise. ” “Good, ” Emma said, her voice steady but guarded. “Because she’s all that matters to me too. ” Later that night, after Madison had gone to bed, Emma sat alone on the couch, her thoughts racing. The day had gone better than she expected, but the lingering tension with Benjamin refused to dissipate. She thought back to their earlier years, when Benjamin’s ambition and charm had been intoxicating. He was the kind of man who could light up a room, who made you feel like you were the only person who mattered. But over time, his career took precedence over their marriage. Late nights at the office turned into weekends away, and eventually, the lies began to surface. Benjamin’s presence in Madison’s life now felt like an echo of those earlier days—captivating, but uncertain. She wanted to believe he had changed, but history had taught her to be wary. Her phone buzzed, breaking her reverie. It was a text from William: Hey, Emma. Just checking in. How did today go with Benjamin and Madison? Emma smiled faintly. Since their coffee meeting, William had been a steady source of support, offering thoughtful advice and genuine concern. She typed back quickly: Madison had a great time. I’m glad for her. But it’s complicated. His reply came almost instantly: It always is. If you ever want to talk, you know where to find me. Emma stared at the message for a long moment, her emotions swirling. It was comforting to know someone understood, even if she didn’t fully understand her own feelings yet. As she set her phone aside and leaned back against the cushions, one thing became clear—whatever the future held, she would keep fighting for Madison’s happiness. Whether or not Benjamin followed through on his promises, Emma knew she could count on herself to protect the person she loved most in the world.
