In the dream, Jared was ten years old again. He rode his motocross bike over the bridge, away from the house, away from restrictions. The stream beneath him was swollen from a solid week’s worth of pelting Florida summer rains. He lay down on the wooden planks for a bit, watching fish and turtles in the water, less than a foot from his face. This was a great way to spend the day. He biked farther on, down to the pond. Last week, he’d been able to walk out to nearly a third of it, the muck at the bottom squishing and sucking his shoes downward. A family of eels had slinked away from him.
