Just after nine in the morning, Lawton pulled the ladder from his backyard shed when he heard a car pull into his gravel driveway. He stepped around the corner and saw the Cadillac Escalade, Darth Vader-black and shiny. The driver’s side door opened and the sheriff stepped out. Oh, this can’t possibly be good news. “Morning, Sheriff O’Connor!” She came around the car, her deep navy pantsuit looking expensive and crisp. A red scarf fluttered at her throat. Lawton briefly wondered where her weapon was, then decided not to think about it.
