CHAPTER FIVE - The Interview That Changed Everything

773 Words
Bella sat in the chair, hands folded neatly in her lap, trying to calm the storm raging in her chest. Her pulse was still racing, her mind still reeling from the fact that Damian Romano—the man who had broken all of her composure the night before—was now sitting across from her, watching her every movement with piercing intensity. “Good morning, Bella,” he said, his voice calm, measured, but layered with that undeniable weight that made her stomach clench. “I hope you slept well.” She swallowed. “I… slept.” He studied her closely, eyes scanning every detail—posture, expression, even the subtle way her fingers tapped lightly on the armrest of the chair. There was something almost predatory about the way he observed her, like he could read her thoughts before she even knew them herself. “Let’s begin,” Damian said, motioning toward a stack of documents on his desk. “Tell me about your experience in administration. Where have you worked before, and why are you applying here?” Bella took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. “I’ve worked at several offices handling scheduling, client communications, and event coordination. I’m meticulous, organized, and I work best under pressure. I’m applying here because I want to challenge myself—and because I believe I can contribute meaningfully to your team.” Damian’s gaze didn’t waver. He leaned back slightly, folding his arms, his expression unreadable. “I see. And what makes you think you can handle working for someone like me?” The words hit like a slap. Someone like him? She straightened, her jaw tightening. “I handle pressure well,” she said firmly, “and I adapt quickly. I don’t… I don’t let personal feelings interfere with professionalism.” His dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second, almost imperceptibly, before the usual steel returned. “That remains to be seen,” he murmured. Bella felt the tension tighten in the room, like a coiled spring ready to snap. She refused to let herself be intimidated, no matter how difficult it was to resist the magnetic pull emanating from him. Yet, every glance, every movement he made made her pulse betray her. “Tell me,” Damian continued, leaning slightly forward, “how do you handle situations when people underestimate you? When they try to manipulate you or use you?” Bella’s lips pressed into a thin line. “I stay calm. I assess the situation, then I act decisively. I don’t let emotions cloud my judgment, and I don’t let anyone take advantage of me.” He nodded slowly, as if he had expected nothing less. “Good,” he said softly, then leaned back in his chair. “Because in this world, you’ll encounter people who want to test your limits. Some will want to hurt you. Others will want to control you. You must always remain in control of yourself, or you will be consumed.” Bella’s stomach fluttered. The weight of his words pressed down on her in ways she hadn’t anticipated. His voice was calm but commanding, almost hypnotic. She realized then that working for him wouldn’t be easy—or ordinary. It would be dangerous in ways she hadn’t imagined. And yet… The way his eyes held hers, dark and unwavering, made her pulse race. She couldn’t explain why she felt this magnetic pull, this dangerous attraction that lingered like smoke in the air around him. Damian’s expression softened again, his voice dropping just enough to make her lean forward instinctively. “Bella, this isn’t just a test of skill,” he said quietly. “It’s a test of character. Can you stand firm when the world tries to shake you? Can you stand beside someone who doesn’t make it easy to trust?” She swallowed hard, heat rushing to her cheeks. “I… I believe I can.” A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “Good. That’s all I needed to hear—for now.” Bella exhaled slowly, tension easing just slightly. But the storm inside her hadn’t calmed. The pull between them, the dangerous tension, was growing stronger with every passing second. She wasn’t just attracted to him—she was drawn into a world she couldn’t fully understand yet. And Damian Romano… he wasn’t letting her go. Her heart pounded, and for the first time, she realized that last night wasn’t just a reckless mistake. It was the beginning of something far bigger… something she didn’t yet know how to resist. ---
