Chapter 2

530 Words
Everyone believed Steve would love Claire forever—even Claire herself was convinced of this. Who would have thought that after only three short years, he had already reverted to his old ways? "Oh! That's so good!" A shrill cry shattered Claire's thoughts. When she looked up, Irene was already breathless, clinging to Steve's shoulder. "Mr. Reed... Aren't I so much better than your wife? I pleased you three times!" Irene spoke with a coy smile, completely unaware Claire had opened the private room door. Claire snapped on the lights, seized a wine bottle from the table, and without hesitation, smashed it against the woman's skull. "Ah!" The sudden glare of lights and searing pain made Irene whirl around in furious panic. "What the..." Claire raised an eyebrow at her, still gripping the broken bottle's jagged neck. "What's wrong? Forgotten me already, Miss Scott?" "Mrs. Reed!" the girl stammered, scrambling off Steve in terror. She fumbled for her scattered clothes, tears streaming before she could muster words. "Oh! It hurts, Mr. Reed!" Blood from Irene's wound bloomed across her white dress like crimson ink. Faced with Claire's outburst, Steve calmly put on his shirt and pants, then lit a cigarette and looked up at her with an even gaze. "Honey, you've crossed a line today. Apologize to Irene." Claire couldn't believe what she had just heard. He was the one cheating, Irene was the mistress, and yet he wanted her to apologize to the other woman? "You betrayed me," Claire spat. "She destroyed our marriage, and you want me to apologize?" "Destroyed?" He exhaled, a cigarette dangling from his lips. "Don't be dramatic. You're still Mrs. Reed. Irene's content as my secret." His indifferent stare might as well have been directed at a stranger. "Exactly, Mrs. Reed." Irene sniffled. "I'd never come between you. I wanted this. No strings attached." Claire's stomach churned as she stared at them. Her fists clenched, voice trembling as she said, "Steve, do you remember what you vowed when you proposed? You promised you'd love me forever! But it's only been three years! Is this your idea of forever?" "Claire, you know I chose you for being sweet and sensible. If you keep making a scene, this isn't fun anymore." Steve took a drag of his cigarette. "I'll say it once more—apologize to Irene." Without anyone noticing, a crowd had formed outside the private room. All the company employees rushed upstairs, eager to witness the drama. They had come expecting to see Claire catch her cheating husband. But from the looks of it, she was the one being blamed? "Never! Not killing her was mercy enough. I won't apologize!" Claire turned to leave when Steve's voice sliced through the air, icy cold. "Stop her." Instantly, two bodyguards blocked her path. She whirled toward the man lounging on the sofa. "What the hell are you doing?" "I don't repeat myself, honey. With so many people watching, don't make things difficult for me." Steve crossed his long legs, his tone deceptively soft yet brimming with unshakable authority. Claire shook her head with a bitter laugh. "I don't repeat myself either. I said I won't apologize!"
