Chapter 2: The Blood Pact

"Where is the Warlord's army, Mara?!" the warrior growled from the shadows. Mara gripped the bone-carved blade he had left at her feet, her knees shaking violently in the deep snow. She looked up at him, her breath visible in the freezing air. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice cracking. "I haven't been in the mountains since I lost my pack." The warrior stepped forward. His name was Cole, and his silver eyes were piercing. He was large, scarred, and carried the scent of a lone wolf. He looked at her with suspicion, but there was a flicker of pity in his gaze. "Look at you," Cole said slowly. "You can barely stand. You are bleeding from a hundred wounds and possibly might freeze to death before sunrise. What is your plan, Luna?" Mara swayed on her feet. She clutched the tiny pink shoe to her chest. "I don't have a plan. I don't have anything. I just have to keep moving." Cole crossed his arms, blocking her path. "If you keep moving like that, you will drop dead in a mile, you need warmth and you need to heal." Mara shook her head, her eyes brimming with tears. "I don't have time! Kane has Ella! He said four hours!" "He also said four hours knowing you would die trying," Cole replied, his voice unusually soft. "You can't save your daughter if you are a corpse, Mara." Mara clutched her ribs, wincing in pain. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed into the snow. She looked up at Cole, her body already shaking violently. "Please," she whispered, her teeth chattering. "I have no one left. I cannot do this alone." Cole stared at her for a long moment. He sighed, kneeling down beside her. "I am not doing this for you. I am doing this for that little girl you keep clutching like a lifeline." He pulled off his heavy fur cloak and wrapped it around her trembling shoulders. The warmth seeped into her frozen skin. Mara let out a shuddering breath, leaning into him instinctively. "Thank you," she sobbed, burying her face in the fur. "I feel so alone. I feel like I am dying inside." Cole gently pulled her chin up, forcing her to look into his silver eyes. "Listen to me. You are an Alpha's blood. You survived the cage, you survived the whip and you will survive this mountain. But you need to rest for one hour." "I can't rest," Mara cried. "Every minute I wait, my baby is crying in the dark. She thinks I abandoned her." Cole looked away, his jaw tightening. "I know that pain, Mara. I had a cub once. I lost her when her mother ran away with the Pack. It has been ten years, and I still hear her crying." Mara felt a sharp pang in her chest. She reached out and touched his scarred hand. "You are a father," she whispered. "You understand." Cole nodded, his silver eyes softening. "I understand that you are stronger than you think. But I also understand that you need to stop lying to yourself." Mara blinked. "What lie?" Cole frowned. "You are not just weak in body, Mara. You are weak in spirit. You believe that you will fail her, I can see it in your eyes." Mara swallowed hard, her tears freezing on her cheek. "How could I not believe it?" she choked. "I let my pack burn, I let Kane take her. I am a failure." Mara cried. Cole tightened his grip on her hand. "You are a mother and a mother is not a failure just because she is broken. Get up, Mara. Show me that you want to live." Mara took a deep, shaking breath. She grabbed the fur cloak, pulling herself to her feet. Cole moved to steady her, his hand resting on her lower back. "Where do we go?" she asked, her voice trembling. Cole pointed to a narrow, icy path hidden behind a frozen waterfall. "The Warlord does not use the main road. There is a secret entrance through the old wolf tunnels. I will take you there." Mara looked at him with a fragile, desperate hope. "You are risking your life for me. Why?" Cole looked into her eyes, his voice barely a whisper. "Because I saw the way you looked at that shoe. You love that child more than you fear death. That is rare, Mara. I want to help you prove that love is stronger than fear." Mara felt a strange warmth spread through her chest. It wasn't the mechanical heart; it was the warmth of finding an ally in a frozen hell. "Let's go," she whispered. They began to climb the frozen path. The wind howled, whipping snow into their faces. Mara's legs screamed in pain, but she forced one step after another. Cole stayed close, his presence steady and protective. Suddenly, a sharp, agonizing growl echoed from above them. A massive, black-furred wolf dropped from the cliff, landing directly in front of them. Its eyes glowed a deep, blood red. It was Kane. Kane shifted, his massive human form rising from the wolf's body. He was smiling, but his eyes were ice-cold. "Look at you," Kane sneered, looking at Cole. "The Warlord's own hound, helping my prisoner escape. You really are a fool, Cole." Cole stepped forward, shielding Mara with his body. "I do not serve the Warlord anymore, Kane. I owe Mara nothing but I owe my dead daughter everything." Kane laughed, pulling a massive, black silver-blade from his belt. "Then let me send you to her." Mara screamed, stepping in front of Cole. "NO! Stop! Take me, Kane! I will come back to your dungeon! Just let Cole go!" Kane looked at her with pure disgust. "You are pathetic, Mara. Weak, begging, you were never a true Alpha." Mara's eyes burned with fierce, angry tears. She grabbed the bone-carved blade from Cole's belt and held it up with shaking hands. "I am a mother," she cried, her voice raw. "And I will die protecting him." Kane smiled, his fangs elongating. "That is the most ridiculous thing you have said all day." He lunged forward, his silver blade aiming straight for her heart. Mara closed her eyes, clutching her tiny shoe to her chest. She knew she couldn't dodge. She knew she was about to die. Suddenly, a massive, thunderous roar shook the entire mountain. The ground beneath them split open, and a giant, ancient wolf with glowing white fur burst from the earth. The Warlord had arrived. He looked at Mara with old, piercing eyes. He spoke in a voice that echoed like thunder. "Mara Stone. You have survived a thousand trials. But you are not ready to die yet. You are ready to reclaim what was stolen from you." The Warlord turned his massive head toward Kane, his growl shaking the snow off the trees. "Get out of my mountain, Dorian Kane. Or I will eat your heart while you are still screaming." Kane took a step back, his face pale. Mara dropped the blade, her knees collapsing. She looked up at the giant white wolf, tears streaming down her face. "What do you want from me?" she cried. The Warlord lowered his head, his giant face inches from hers. "Your blood, Luna. I want your blood, your loyalty, and your vengeance." He opened his massive jaws and waited.
