Shares for a Secret

“This way,” Marina's assistant hissed, glancing reluctantly through the hallway and confirming with a nod that it was okay for Selene to step out. Selene pushed forward, lowering her head, her long hair tousled across her face to hide what the nose mask she had on had failed to conceal. “She’s waiting in the car,” the girl threw. Selene nodded, following quickly as they exited the hallway, stepping out into the open garage of the hospital, spotting Marina just behind the tinted glass of her car. “There she is.” Selene brushed past the girl, hurrying into the back seat of Marina's car and exhaling a relieving breath. “I told you you had nothing to worry about…” Marina mumbled with an eye roll, pressing a go-ahead nod to the man behind the wheel, and the engine roared to life. “You better hurry, Marina… soon he'll find out I'm gone…” “I know.” Marina huffed, stealing Selene a grudging glance as anger simmered within her. She had tried to talk Selene out of demanding her father's shares, but she wouldn't back down, insisting it was the only way she would agree to abort the child. “Are you really sure about this?” Marina asked for the umpteenth time. Selene sank into the seat, clasping her eyes shut to find some sleep. “My father's company is barely surviving, Selene, what do you need such worthless shares for?” Selene scoffed. “I can give you anything…” “Would you rather I clung unto Matteo with this baby… I mean, you of all people should understand what that would mean for me, Marina… I'll gain a lot more than—” “Fine,” Marina snapped with a frustrated hiss. “I'll let you have it.” She spat. “And how do you intend to make that happen?” Selene asked. Marina tore her eyes away, her lips curling between her teeth. “The shares are in my name.” She disclosed. Selene's eyes faltered open. She sat up. “It’s useless to me anyway, so you can have them.” Selene let out a low scoff, darting her gaze to the busy world rushing past the window of the moving car. “I have the document at home and I'm taking you there to sign them.” Marina continued, her eyes fixated on Selene's face as her expression hardened. “And once the transfer is complete, Selene… that thing inside of you must not live another day.” “You don't have to remind me.” Selene scoffed. “My Leo is enough,” she muttered under her breath. Marina said nothing else and the drive continued in silence, soon the announcement stretching across the car as it rolled to a quiet stop. “We're here.” Marina pushed the door open and stepped out, Selene following after her. “Come with me,” she ordered and led the way into the house. Selene's eyes roamed the place, a bitter rush flooding her veins as she took it in, tears helplessly pooling in her eyes. “Are you coming?” Marina blurted, snapping her out of it. “Sure,” she chuckled and followed quietly. “Welcome, ma'am…” a maid greeted by the door, leading the way as Marina catwalked into the living room. “Is he home?” she asked. The maid shook her head. “He's been away on a business trip for weeks now…” Marina rolled her eyes. Typical of her father, never home, desperately trying to build his company into what they both knew it would never be, no doubt to impress the Morettis, to prove to the world he was worthy to be in-laws with them. “I'll just get something in my room. Return to your business…” Marina purred, and the maid nodded, stepping back as Marina headed for her room with Selene behind her. “This way,” Marina mouthed, hurrying into her room and disappearing inside. Selene hesitated, her gaze lifting to the one familiar door calling to her a few steps away—where her room used to be. “Selene…” Marina called, relief washing over her as she landed her eyes on the document tucked away in her safe. “I have it,” she mouthed loudly, grabbing it before bolting out of the room, confusion settling in at the sight of the empty hallway. “Where is she?” she asked, raising a brow, her eyes roaming the hallway as she proceeded down. “Sel—” the words caught in her throat as a small glimpse of Selene walking straight and knowingly into Samantha's room sent a cold tremor of chills shooting down her spine. “How long has it been, Samantha?” she heard Selene mutter, her fingers tightening desperately around the paper as the air seized from her lungs.
