The Awakening

The woman watched her daughter, Marina, catwalk away, a small smile stretching across her lips as mischief coiled low in her stomach. “I’ll just trust you, Marina…” she murmured, drawing in a deep breath and giving a firm nod. Marina was reckless, yes — but one thing was certain: she always had her way in the end. Her gaze whipped back to the door where Selene lay unconscious, her eyes lighting with something evil and certain. “Slut,” she spat, bitter and venomous, her feet lurching into motion toward the door. She pushed it open and settled her eyes on Selene, still asleep. She walked in. “You should have stayed far away from this family… now you’re about to end up like every single one of them who tried to stand in my daughter’s way…” she snarled, her face twisting into a wicked frown as her eyes roamed over Selene. “Now you leave me no choice but to rid you of every trace of life… for my daughter’s sake.” She hissed and glanced briefly at the door behind her. “I can’t have anyone walking in here just when I’m on the verge of finishing this b***h… especially Damien.” She stormed back to the door and took a quick look outside before slamming it shut. Her eyes returned to Selene. “I’ll tell you a short story before I finish you off, slut… you see, unfortunately, I can in fact relate to your ambitions. Yes, I was once a nobody dreaming of wealth and power just like you. I had nothing to my name. I wasn’t born into wealth… but guess who was?” Her voice trailed off into laughter as she settled on the edge of the bed, watching Selene closely. “Not my husband either… but his wife at that time.” Selene’s fingers curled into fists as the woman continued to laugh, completely missing the movement. “She was young, beautiful… naive. I mean, she basically had it all,” she taunted. “And to an extent, my husband loved her. Well… not until I entered the picture,” she heaved, rising to her feet and closing in on the bed, grabbing a pillow beside Selene. “That brat would look down on me like she was better. I hated her with every single nerve in my body. And you know what day I considered the happiest day of my life?” She sneered and rolled her eyes. “The day I watched her burn with her brat,” she scoffed, shaking her head before running her gaze over Selene, faking a pitiful look and pouting her lower lip. “Even until today… my daughter and I celebrate the demise of her and her little brat every year.” Selene’s lips pressed against her trembling teeth as anger swirled violently within her. She struggled to remain still, even on the verge of losing control. “So I’m sorry… dear Selene. Even though I see myself in you and how you wish to take my daughter’s place someday… I just can’t let you do that. We’ve come too far to lose now,” she mocked, her voice dripping with pride. “Soon, Marina will have a son, and it doesn’t matter if he carries Matteo’s blood just like his sister Quinn… as long as he’s a Moretti—” Selene’s eyes snapped open, tearing a horrified gasp from the woman. “Did you just say?” Selene shuddered, blinking rapidly as the weight of the words crashed against her like a tidal wave. “You… you heard…” Marina’s mother stammered, shaking frantically as Selene slowly rose from the bed, an eerie, victorious laugh breaking from her throat — like a woman who had just found the perfect bait. “I’m impressed, I must say,” Selene murmured, flipping her long hair over her shoulder as her posture straightened and confidence settled over her like a crown. “Your daughter and you are a lot messier than I expected,” Selene threw coolly. She was just about to brush past the trembling woman when the woman grabbed her arm to stop her. “Get your hands off me,” Selene snarled, shoving her hard without a second thought, sending her crashing into the table, her head striking it before she collapsed, unconscious. A scoff ripped from Selene’s throat as she rolled her eyes and majestically strutted out of the room. “Finally,” she whispered, a slow, dangerous smile stretching across her lips.
