Anything It Takes

Marina’s eyes drifted to Matteo’s face for the umpteenth time, her teeth biting into her trembling nails as panic shot through her. Matteo had ordered that a doctor be called and Selene be treated within the walls of the mansion. “What do I do… what do I do?” she whimpered, nausea twisting her stomach at the slightest thought of the doctor reporting the pregnancy to Matteo. “Marina!” Damien called, loud and furious, his eyes snapping toward her from where he had been pacing outside the door. “Why did you do that?” he demanded, seizing her wrist in one firm motion and tearing a painful wince from her lips. “Please don’t hurt her…” Marina’s mother stepped in, her pleading eyes begging Damien to let go as pain contorted Marina’s face. “Stay out of this…” Damien snapped, glaring daggers at the woman. “She’s your wife, sir…” “I said stay out of it!” Damien barked. She pressed a reluctant nod and stepped aside. “I didn’t mean to… it was a mistake…” “Oh please, Marina… don’t play with me,” Damien growled. Marina looked away, the pain rippling within her morphing into anger. “Don’t try to mess with—” “She’s pregnant for your father and you still care about her?” Marina spat bitterly, something close to disbelief flickering in Damien’s eyes. She let out a hiss and yanked herself free. “You can be a coward if you want, Damien… but I, Marina, will never let a nobody have a place in this family,” she threw at him. Damien’s hold on her loosened, his expression hardening as he tore his eyes away from her. “Yes, I pushed her to get rid of her brat. So what, Damien? You want her to keep it?” Damien said nothing. Marina hissed. “What you should be worried about is your father never finding out about the pregnancy…” she continued, shoving Damien aside. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I want to make sure that never happens…” She brushed past Damien just as her eyes caught sight of Matteo retreating down the hallway. Her mother followed quickly behind her. “What do you plan to do, Marina?” she asked. Marina hissed. “Anything, Mom. Anything… as long as he never finds out about her baby,” she sneered. “Don’t do anything reckless or you’ll blow everything up, Marina… remember, this is not just about Quinn… it’s also about your son,” she said, and Marina’s steps faltered to a slow stop. Her mother gave a firm nod. “We need him not to suspect anything, Marina… and you need to have this boy as soon as possible, especially now.” Marina exhaled deeply, her eyes lighting with a wicked glint as an idea settled into her mind. “I know just what to do, Mom…” she said, her gaze drifting back to the room where Selene was being treated. At that very moment, the door clicked open and the doctor stepped out, his eyes scanning the hallway in search of Matteo. Marina hurried forward, her hand snatching the report from the doctor’s grasp. She glanced at it and hissed. Of course it confirmed the pregnancy — and worse, the baby was safe. “Ma’am—” “I’ll take it to him,” Marina cut him off. He hesitated for a moment before giving a small nod. “You can leave now,” Marina said. He raised a brow. “I need to see—” “You heard her, Doctor. You need to leave,” Damien interrupted. Marina’s eyes met his, and he stepped closer. “Your job is done,” he added curtly. The man sighed softly before brushing past Marina, his steps heavy and reluctant. “Your father must never find out,” Marina said quietly. Damien snatched the report from her hand, scanning it quickly. “I have to take it to him,” Marina insisted, pulling it back. “Take care of the doctor,” Marina ordered. To her surprise, Damien did not protest. He bit down on his lower lip, brushed past her, and pulled out his phone, dialing a number. Marina exhaled in relief. He was really in on getting rid of Selene’s baby — just like she was. “So what do you intend to do, Marina?” her mother asked, hurrying back to her side. “Something very important, Mom…” Marina murmured, a sinister smile stretching across her lips as she glanced down at herself. She was conceiving her son tonight. And Selene had just handed her the perfect opportunity.
