The Test

980 Words
Selene let out a small smile as soon as the car waded through the tall gates of the mansion, veering onto the quiet estate road. “Sir…” the guard behind the wheel called. Matteo said nothing, his face etched with a serious frown. “I got a call from the doctor some minutes ago. He said he left the test report with Sir Damien's wife.” Selene shifted uneasily in her seat, her lips curling between her teeth. “Would you like to talk to him directly?” he asked. “No… there's no need,” Matteo grumbled. Selene glanced at his face briefly, tension coiling low in her stomach at his serious expression. “I really didn't try to….” Matteo's cold eyes shifted to her and she swallowed back her words, forcing a small smile. “Never mind,” she muttered, averting her eyes from him as his gaze lingered on her face, like he had questions he refused to ask, as though asking them would mean he cared. “About Dylan…” He let out a scoff and cut her off, peeling his eyes away from her like he couldn't care less. “I don't want to hear it,” he dismissed. Selene's heart clenched, helpless and beyond her control. “Just be sure that child belongs to me, Selene… you won't want to know how bad things can get for you if you dare lie to me.” She let out a dry chuckle. “What woman would not know the father of her child…” He let out another scoff, leaving Selene's wrist tightening at her sides as resentment simmered within her. “And be sure it lives too…” he added. Selene looked away, rolling her eyes. Like she would keep a child from a man like Matteo, the devil himself. Leo was enough for her. He was her everything. The games she played with the Morettis were for one purpose and that purpose only—they were the very key to her payback. “We're here, sir…” the guard announced. Selene ran her gaze around, exhaling a nervous breath as the car crawled to a stop inside what seemed like a hospital garage. The door clicked open and the guard stepped out first, pulling the door open for Matteo. He stepped out and Selene immediately followed. “He's expecting you, sir…” the guard mouthed. Matteo said nothing and simply seized Selene's hand, leading the way into the hospital building. Selene swallowed the tension building within her as they stepped into the luxurious yet eerily empty elevator, the doors sliding shut. Her eyes helplessly drifted to Matteo's face as something stirred within her. “Get your eyes off me,” he snapped, his voice laced with barely restrained anger. She nodded and looked away. Almost immediately, the chime rang through the air and the doors slid open, revealing a number of doctors and nurses clustered anxiously by the corner. “You're here, sir…” one of them greeted, the rest offering slight bows as Matteo passed with Selene. “Your… your assistant already explained everything to me,” he said, his eyes roaming briefly over Selene beside him. “We'll run the test as soon as possible.” “How long will it take?” Matteo asked. “We'll try to be as quick as possible, sir, so it'll take about one hour.” Matteo turned, his face twisting with annoyance. “The test is reliable and—” “Do it,” Matteo hissed, shutting him up. His feet faltered to a stop as his hand finally released Selene. The doctor turned, calling over a nurse behind him. “See Mr. Moretti to the private waiting lounge.” “Yes, sir…” she mouthed, offering Matteo a slight bow before leading the way. Matteo's eyes found Selene, cold and warning, as though silently daring her not to try anything stupid. Selene tucked her face away, rolling her eyes to herself as he brushed past her. “This way, ma'am…” the doctor mouthed, motioning for her to follow. “Can I talk to you alone, doctor?” Selene suddenly asked. The rest of the doctors exchanged glances. “But ma'am—” “It's about the baby. And you know this could go really bad for you if I decide to spin things around just because I can,” she leaned closer, whispering only for him to hear. The man swallowed a desperate breath and nodded. Selene shot the rest of the doctors a mean glare and they quickly dispersed. “Is everything okay, ma'am…?” “I already miscarried,” she blurted. The doctor's face drained of color. “What?” “So I need you to save me all that hassle of running a test and just sit it out until it's time… and report that to him. Make sure the report clearly states I had nothing to do with losing the baby.” “I'm sorry, ma'am… I can't issue such a report without following the proper procedure.” Selene scoffed. “Every mother can feel when the child growing inside of them no longer exists.” “We can still try to confirm…” “There's nothing to confirm. I bled… I….” “Then you have nothing to worry about, ma'am. We can still just run the test.” Selene hissed, shooting him an annoyed glare. “This way, ma'am…” he mouthed, leading the way into the ward. “I'm not wrong, am I?... It's really gone, right?” The words escaped her lips before she could stop them, fear coiling low in her stomach for the first time. “Ma'am?” the doctor called. Selene shoved her fear aside and forced her suddenly heavy legs into motion, cold sweat breaking across her forehead.
