The Seed of Inheritance

Selene’s eyes trailed down to the paper in her hand, rereading the pregnancy result for the umpteenth time. She let out a small chuckle and shook her head. Was the universe really about to mess with her? Just one night of carelessness, and she was pregnant with Matteo’s baby. “Is everything okay, ma’am?” the driver asked, his eyes meeting her troubled face through the rearview mirror. Selene pressed a small smile. “You look really disturbed, ma’am…” “Just mind your business,” Selene suddenly snapped, cutting him off. He forced a dry chuckle, and the ride continued in silence. Another hiss tore from Selene’s lips as her fingers brushed against her flat belly. There really was a baby growing in there—one she would be a fool to keep. She hissed again and dipped her fingers into her purse, pulling out her phone and dialing Ava’s number. “Ma’am?” Ava’s voice echoed on the other end almost immediately. “I need you to make arrangements for an emergency short trip as soon as possible…” “So suddenly? Ma’am, did something happen?” “No questions, Ava… I’ll send you the details, and all you need to do is make plans for it.” “Don’t you think we should talk about it first?” “Just do as I say, Ava,” Selene snapped. “Fine,” Ava agreed. Selene hissed and tossed the phone to the side, her fingers threading into her hair as she exhaled deep breaths to steady herself. “You know what? Turn the car around,” Selene blurted. The driver’s eyes flicked to her, his brow arching. “You heard me… I said turn around.” “Yes, ma’am…” he stuttered, agreeing reluctantly before spinning the car around. Selene squeezed her eyes shut and sank into the seat, her mind wallowing deep in thought. “So where am I taking you, ma’am? Back to the hospital?” the driver asked. Selene scoffed. “Ma’am?” “To the Morettis’,” she rumbled, and the man pressed a small nod. Marina shot to her feet as her assistant came scurrying through the door, pressing a slight bow with a proud smile on her face. “So… what did the doctor say?” Marina asked. “Positive, ma’am… we can start planning the party as soon as possible. A date has been decided by the doctor, and it works perfectly, ma’am… it’ll be one of your fertile days.” Marina’s face lit up with excitement as she trailed her gaze to her mother, seated on the sofa behind her. “See, Marina… I told you that you had nothing to worry about,” her mother bragged. “I just can’t believe it, Mom… if all goes well, I’ll be conceiving a son on Quinn’s birthday,” Marina gushed, pacing as her voice dripped with excitement. “Sir Damien would be so happy, ma’am…” the girl chirped innocently. Marina’s mother shot her a hard glare, sending instant regret down her spine. The girl’s gaze shifted to Marina, and seeing the joy drain from her face, her heart sank. “I didn’t mean—” “Your job is done. Leave,” Marina cut her off, waving her hand dismissively as she returned to her seat. The girl bowed quickly and disappeared from sight. “You have absolutely nothing to worry about…” “But, Mom—” “As long as you do as I say, Marina… you’ll be giving the Morettis a son—the sole heir to Matteo’s empire.” Marina sighed, fear etched across her face. “There’s nothing to fear, Marina…” “But I just can’t help it, Mom… Damien and his father would kill me if they ever get wind of what I’m about to do…” “They won’t, Marina. Besides, you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s not your fault that husband of yours can’t make a woman pregnant,” the woman hissed, rolling her eyes. Marina looked away, still worried. “There’s nothing to fear, Marina… you’ve got this. Besides, it’s been years since you had Quinn, and no one’s ever caught wind of what you did to have her. This won’t be any different…” “But I just have a feeling, Mom…” “Relax, daughter… you worry too much.” Marina drew in a deep breath and forced a smile. “Fine, Mom… I trust you.” The woman smiled proudly, rose to her feet, and flipped her long hair over her shoulder. “I’ll have to take my leave, girl…” Marina sat up as well. “Trust me when I say I’ll take care of everything… and all you have to do is carry his seed.” Marina nodded quickly. The woman smiled and majestically strutted toward the door. “Be good,” she mouthed as her hand reached the doorknob, pulling the door open— Only to come face to face with Selene.
