Trapped

Selene let out a small sigh, finally shrugging the worry tugging at her aside, her eyes searching the ward for the doctor. “Do you need anything, ma'am?” he asked, appearing just in time. Selene pushed her weak frame up, stretching her hand and silently urging him to hand over the phone tucked inside his hand. He raised a brow. “I just need to make a call,” she mouthed. The doctor chuckled, visibly hesitating. “I'm sorry, ma'am… but I'm not sure Mr. Moretti would want me to—” “I am not Matteo's prisoner, okay?” she hissed, lurching forward and snatching the phone from his hand. And as if disagreeing with her, her memory ran back to that night at the auction, when Matteo had purchased her like a doll for experimentation. “But, ma'am…” She dialed Ava's number, not paying him any mind, tucking in her lower lip as the phone rang. “Please, answer the phone,” she mouthed, listening, eager to hear Ava's voice just to know how Leo was doing. “Ma'am?” Ava's voice cut in, ripping a sigh of relief from Selene's lips as she was almost at the verge of worrying. “Is everything okay, ma'am? I've been trying to—” “How is Leo?” she blurted out, her ears straining to hear him say he was doing just great, but Ava let out a small sigh, hesitating on her end. “Ava?” “I've been trying to reach you, ma'am… Leo's at it again.” Selene's heart dropped. “What?” she shuttered. “You know how serious this can get, Selene…” “I'll be right there,” she whispered urgently and ended the call, pressing the phone back into the hands of its owner, trembling within herself as she hopped out of bed. “What… what is it, ma'am?” the doctor asked. “I'm leaving…” she spat, scurrying for the door, her fingers reaching for the knob when the doctor bolted after her, blocking her path. “What do you mean, you're leaving, ma'am… I'm sorry but I can't allow that.” “I don't need your permission to leave… I'm a grown woman, and for your information, my son needs me.” He lowered his head and didn’t budge from the door as Selene tried to shove past him. “Get out of my way…” “The results should be out in a few minutes…” “There's no baby, don't you get it!” Selene screamed, running her fingers through her hair, frustration simmering within her as he remained his ground. “Fine,” she heaved. “Can I go see Matteo instead?” she asked, and he looked up. “Make up your mind, quick… would you rather I go ask him for a pass to leave or I run out of this hospital and have you bear the brunt for it?” He contemplated for a short while, then pressed an agreeing nod, finally stepping out of the way. Selene hissed, annoyed, storming out of the room. Just about to follow the hallway she had vividly remembered the doctor take Matteo to, her eyes spotted a crying Marina, scampering behind her unconscious mother on a stretcher, a good number of nurses clustered beside them. She looked away in a quick attempt to avoid Marina's gaze, but her voice blared out Selene's name regardless. “Selene!” she called in an urgent, angry voice. “f**k,” Selene cursed, biting her lower lip as fear shot down her spine. Leo needed her, and here Marina was calling out, no doubt with heavy queries and drama waiting to unfold. “What did you do to her? What did you do to my mom!” she screamed. Even though Selene didn’t have her eyes on her, she could feel the shift in tension, like her hands were just about to crash against Selene’s face. “Get out of the way!” she yelled as the sound of her palms striking the doctor’s face blared loudly through the hallway. Selene whipped her gaze to the man, now clutching his burning cheeks. “Say something, Selene… what did you do to my mother?” Marina continued, clawing and shoving to free herself from the nurses intervening. Selene shook her head, exhaling a calming breath. She wasn’t going to fight her, not now. Leo needed her. “I'm asking you a question!” Selene turned, rolling her eyes as she faced the doctor. “Let's go…” “Oh, you better pray, Selene… you better pray this is all just a misunderstanding, because if I ever get to know you actually tried to harm my mother, I would tear you to pieces…” “Doctor…” a nurse called, hurrying to her heels as she waved the document tucked between her fingers at him. “The results are out…” she announced. Selene snatched the paper from the nurse's hand, tearing it open, urgent and desperate to shove the confirmation that she had nothing growing inside her to the doctor's face like she had said, so she'd finally be free to leave for her son, Leo. “It's positive, doctor… she’s pregnant,” the nurse disclosed, snapping Selene's gaze up. Her face drained of all color in that instant.
